The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1657: Chapter 1657: Meng Qi Silently Takes Out Food

Yuan Gui slightly opened his mouth, staring at her in disbelief.

”They actually...”

Upon further thought, he didn’t find it surprising. As a solitary orphan with no relatives, he had been bullied by the escorts when he first arrived at the Jianghe Escort Agency. The Head Escort never stood up for him either.

This kind of decision seemed to be their style.

Yuan Gui took a deep breath and pulled himself together, ”How did Monarch Lu Xiang know about me?” He was just an obscure, insignificant person.

”We were investigating Jiang Kuanyu and found you connected to the case. We heard you fell off a cliff, and we thought your fate would be grim. But when they said they didn’t see your body, they suspected you might still have a slim chance of survival. Seems like luck was on your side. What exactly happened back then? Since you’re unharmed, why didn’t you return to Dongan Province? And why did you end up here, fighting with them?”

Upon hearing they were investigating Jiang Kuanyu, Yuan Gui’s eyes lit up slightly, indicating they knew Jiang Kuanyu wasn’t a good person either.

He regained some spirit and was about to speak when his stomach suddenly growled.

With that, Meng Yunzheng and the others fell silent.

Yuan Gui awkwardly admitted, ”I... I haven’t eaten for two days.”

It was indeed due to severe hunger; otherwise, he wouldn’t have been in such a sorry state during the fight earlier.

However, neither Meng Yunzheng nor Shu Yu had brought food, and it wasn’t practical to go out and find something to eat at this moment.

Just at that moment, a hand silently extended from behind, offering a piece of instant noodle cake.

Meng Yunzheng and Shu Yu quickly turned their heads to look at Meng Qi behind them—did you bring food while going out to find someone?

Meng Qi whispered, ”I thought there wouldn’t be stalls outside for breakfast, so I brought it just in case.”

He had stayed in the secret room all this time and hadn’t seen the street scenes when Meng Yunzheng and the others arrived yesterday. He thought the outside was so chaotic that no one dared to set up stalls, so he brought the noodle cake along.

Not only did he bring the noodle cake, but he also had a small water pouch.

It turned out to be just right for Yuan Gui.

Yuan Gui’s eyes lit up upon seeing the food and drink, and he quickly accepted them, chomping down on the noodle cake.

However, the noodle cake was too dry, and his cracked lips had no moisture at all. Eating made them bleed, causing Shu Yu’s eyelid to twitch, so she simply got up to stand outside and keep watch.

Yuan Gui quickly finished and drained the water from the pouch, feeling much more comfortable.

Plus, with the excellent medicine Zhao Xi provided, Meng Qi took the opportunity to apply it while Yuan Gui was eating. At this point, Yuan Gui felt thoroughly revitalized, as if all the pains in his body had vanished.

Shu Yu returned to the room, and without delay, Yuan Gui recounted what had happened on his escort journey.

”When we were about twenty miles from the prefecture of Changjin Prefecture’s capital, we encountered a group of bandits. Those people were targeting Jiang Kuanyu. As for me, I was eager to make a name for myself, hoping the Head Escort would value me so I could lead a better life when we returned. Thus, I risked my life to get close to him, hoping to protect him.”

Who knew it was all just a conspiracy.

”At that time, Jiang Kuanyu was forced to the edge of a cliff. His foot slipped, and he was about to fall. I hurried to grab him, but who would have thought we’d both be pulled down. As we fell, I discovered he had a vine tied around his waist. Below the cliff was a cave, and inside, two people pulled Jiang Kuanyu in directly.”
