The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1081: Chapter 1081: Uncle Yan, the Old Beggar

Shu Yu’s carriage headed all the way to Huajiang Prefecture, and after traveling a good distance, she asked, ”Ying Xi, did your brother ever mention the gatekeeper of the Quansheng Escort Agency to you?”

Ying Xi replied, ”Gatekeeper?”

She thought for a moment, ”Are you talking about Uncle Yan?”

”Probably.” Shu Yu hadn’t taken a close look at the old beggar’s face; his appearance was disheveled, and she couldn’t make out his features. ”What kind of person is he?”

”My brother didn’t say much about him, but he said Uncle Yan was the most skilled person in the entire escort agency.”

It was for this reason that Ying Dong shared information about Uncle Yan with her. If he were just an inconspicuous gatekeeper, who would bother to mention him?

”My brother said that Uncle Yan was saved by Uncle Meng when he was injured and on the brink of death. The specific details of this incident are unknown even to my brother, but ever since then, Uncle Yan has become the gatekeeper of the escort agency. When my brother and Young Master Meng were young, he would watch over their training. Because whether it was my father or Uncle Meng, they had to frequently escort goods and weren’t home, so Uncle Yan would supervise their martial arts practice.”

Ying Xi didn’t remember having any interactions with Uncle Yan, but according to Ying Dong, Uncle Yan was very kind to children. When she was upset and cried as a child, he would buy her malt candy to eat.

”Why did Miss suddenly ask about Uncle Yan?” Uncle Yan should have been sent to Uncle Meng’s place ten years ago.

Shu Yu and Ying Xi both sat on the carriage box, with her leaning against the edge, her head gently bobbing with the motion.

Her voice was somewhat low, ”I saw that Uncle Yan, right at the Quansheng Escort Agency gate.”

”Whoa...” Ying Xi suddenly pulled the reins and looked at her in shock, ”Miss, are you saying you saw Uncle Yan?”

”Yes, he’s a beggar now, sitting at the gate of the escort agency begging. According to the staff of the restaurant across the street, ever since that fire disaster ten years ago, he’s become erratic and not quite clear-headed.”

”How, how could that be? Isn’t he...” supposed to be at Uncle Meng’s house?

Ying Xi’s fingers tightened around the reins, and she raised her head abruptly to ask, ”Then Miss, shouldn’t we, should we not take him along? I mean, wouldn’t Young Master Meng want to see him?”

If Uncle Yan were a normal person, Ying Xi wouldn’t ask this, but since Miss said he now lives as a confused beggar, Ying Xi found it hard to associate him with the most skilled Uncle Yan in her brother’s account, feeling somewhat distressed.

However, Shu Yu shook her head, indicating for her to continue the journey.

Once the carriage resumed its swaying, Shu Yu finally spoke, ”Someone is watching Uncle Yan.”

”Who?”

”It should be someone from Gong Qiu.”

Ying Xi didn’t quite understand, ”Why, why are they watching Uncle Yan?”

Shu Yu chuckled softly, ”You and your brother don’t believe Uncle Meng died, right?” Seeing Ying Xi nod, ”I guess Gong Qiu doesn’t believe it either. If he thinks Uncle Meng isn’t dead, he’ll eventually come back. Uncle Yan is such an important person to him, so Uncle Meng would surely contact Uncle Yan when he returns, right? So they keep watching him and the Meng family.”

Ying Xi opened her mouth slightly, ”But it’s been ten years.”

Yes, ten years.

The fact that Gong Qiu can focus on the Meng family for a decade shows just how cautious they are.

Not finding Meng Pei’s body, let alone ten years, they would probably keep watching for twenty or thirty years.

Look, the person watching the Meng family has even become the shopkeeper of the restaurant across the street.
