The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1079: Chapter 1079: The Old Beggar at the Door

The staff sighed and pointed to the beggar huddled in the corner of the doorway, “Do you see that beggar?”

Shu Yu nodded, “I saw him, I just gave him some copper coins earlier.”

“That old beggar was originally the gatekeeper of this courtyard. Years ago, after the courtyard caught fire, the mistress of the house was burned to death. The old beggar blamed himself immensely, thinking it was his fault for not being there that day and failing to save the master. After the courtyard burned down, he became quite deranged and stays by the gate all day. If anyone dares to make a move on the house, he gets furious. Yet, this old beggar possesses some skills and is difficult for ordinary people to defeat.”

Shu Yu was startled; was the old beggar originally the gatekeeper of the Meng family’s escort agency?

She heard from Meng Yunzheng that the escorts from the Quansheng Escort Agency either went off to seek their own paths or went to work for other escort agencies. As for the servants in the escort agency, there weren’t many to start with, but they were all taken back by the Meng family’s uncle.

Logically speaking, this old beggar should have left with the Meng family’s uncle, so why is he still here?

Could it be that he has been guarding this place for ten years?

The staff sighed again and continued, “After it happened twice, the county magistrate sent someone to take a look but didn’t drive the old beggar away, just forbade anyone from making a move on the house.”

As for why the county magistrate paid such attention to this matter, the staff didn’t know.

But Shu Yu knew, it was likely because of Gong Qiu.

“This old beggar is indeed someone who values loyalty and sentiment, he’s really pitiful.”

The staff nodded, “Truly quite loyal.”

Shu Yu then took out one tael of silver from her sleeve and handed it to the staff, “Help me give this to the old beggar.”

“This, young lady…”

Shu Yu sighed, “I’m someone with a kind heart and soft nature, I can’t bear to hear such stories or see such loyal and sentimental people suffer. Take it, let him have a better meal.”

The staff, “…” I don’t know what to say anymore.

Actually, he was quite loyal too, this restaurant business wasn’t good, yet he still worked diligently without slacking for a single day, shouldn’t he also have a better meal?

The staff looked at the pieces of silver in his hand, nearly blurting out those words.

But seeing Shu Yu with only a dish of snacks and a pot of tea in front of her, he held back those words.

He took the pieces of silver and ran to the doorway, placing the silver in front of the old beggar, saying, “The young lady who gave you copper coins earlier wants you to have this. She said you value loyalty and sentiment, so buy more food, don’t go hungry.”

The old beggar took the silver, bit it, and then laughed heartily.

The staff sighed, shook his head, and turned to head back.

Shu Yu continued drinking tea and eating snacks. Likely out of sheer envy for her reward, since there weren’t many customers, the staff was quite idle and kept coming over to pour tea for Shu Yu.

Shu Yu felt like she was dealing with a diligent service staff, as her floral tea was only half-drunk before it was topped up again.

She was quite helpless, even the shopkeeper couldn’t stand it, came over to scold the staff a few times, and apologized to Shu Yu.

But Shu Yu waved her hand, smiling, “It’s fine, I quite enjoy listening to these stories, and he tells them well.”

Shu Yu and the staff didn’t just talk about the burned courtyard across the way, she also brought up other topics, and it must be said, this staff knew Tianning County’s matters like the back of his hand, extremely well-informed.

However, Shu Yu also confirmed one thing because of this: as long as she didn’t mention the Meng family’s escort agency, the vague sense of being watched gradually faded away.
