The Ace Bigshot Becomes A Farmgirl

Chapter 1078: Chapter 1078: I’m Softhearted

The beggar raised his head, seeing Shu Yu looking at him, he quickly extended his bowl, ”Miss, please be kind.”

Shu Yu touched her sleeve, pulled out five or six copper coins from it, and walked forward to place them in his bowl.

Just as she bent down, she suddenly had a feeling of being watched.

Years of caution made her trust her intuition very much; the hair on her body instantly stood on end, and her entire body tensed.

Shu Yu’s actions paused slightly. After putting down the copper coins, she said nothing and straightened up again.

She then smiled, stepped back two steps, and turned around nonchalantly.

There was no one behind her, only a moderately sized inn. At this time, there were only two or three tables of guests inside, drinking wine, eating peanuts, and chatting.

Indeed, no one was looking this way; it seemed as if it was just her imagination.

Shu Yu pursed her lips and simply stepped into the inn’s main hall.

The staff immediately came up to her, ”Miss, would you like to order something?”

Shu Yu wasn’t hungry, but she still ordered a plate of the local specialty cakes and a pot of flower tea, then found a seat by the window.

The staff quickly brought what she ordered. While pouring tea for her, he smiled and asked, ”The guest looks unfamiliar, seems like you’re not from around here?”

Shu Yu smiled and said, ”Yes, I’m not a local, first time coming here. One of my servants has relatives here. Since I’m passing through Tianning County, she begged me to let her visit her hometown. I wasn’t keen on going, so I’m just wandering around nearby.”

”Well, you sure are a kind-hearted employer, Miss.”

Shu Yu nodded, ”Yes, there aren’t many employers like me nowadays; I’m quite soft-hearted.”

The staff, ”...” was momentarily at a loss for words.

Luckily, he had poured the tea, quickly put down the teapot, and was about to leave, when Shu Yu abruptly asked, ”By the way, what’s the deal with the courtyard opposite your inn?”

As soon as she mentioned this, that feeling of being watched returned.

Unsure whether the other person was more restrained this time, not as brazen, the feeling only lasted an instant and was quickly gone.

But Shu Yu still looked towards the entrance, pointing at the Quansheng Escort Agency outside, while her peripheral vision swiftly scanned the surroundings, her gaze fleetingly passing over the shopkeeper beside the counter, then she asked the staff, ”That courtyard over there, burned down like that, why hasn’t it been properly repaired? This area is quite lively, to leave it like that is such a waste.”

The staff sighed and whispered, ”Isn’t it so? Everyone says it’s a pity. It’s just that, that courtyard was involved in a lawsuit back in the day, involving an official from the capital. The owner isn’t in Tianning County, so it’s been left alone. Though some tried to take advantage of the situation, they all failed.”

The owner of this courtyard is Meng Pei. After the fire, the authorities finally concluded it was caused by improper use of fire by the owner, with the case file stating it was accidental.

After Meng Pei was presumed dead by everyone, the house should naturally be inherited by his son Meng Yunzheng.

However, Meng Yunzheng was taken away by Gong Qiu, and wasn’t Meng Pei’s son, so the courtyard went to Meng Pei’s brother. His brother came to Tianning County to handle the Meng family’s affairs, and after finishing, went back.

The owner of the courtyard isn’t in Tianning County, nor does Meng Pei’s brother plan to sell, so it’s been left as is.

Shu Yu was particularly curious, ”Why did those wanting to take it for themselves fail?”
