Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 233: Chapter 223: Sister Ling

Every girl brought here arrived crying and screaming. Most of them were covered in injuries—the marks left from their struggle.

It was the first time Sister Ling had ever seen a girl like Tang Mo, who arrived so clean and then so calmly and composedly got herself settled in.

From the moment Tang Mo entered, Sister Ling’s eyes never left her. Naturally, the ID Watch that hadn’t been removed from her wrist did not escape Sister Ling’s notice either.

Sister Ling wasn’t sure of the girl’s background, so she spoke with a degree of caution.

In truth, Sister Ling didn’t have the same status as the other girls here. She was the one who managed the place.

After all, three women are enough to start a drama. With so many of them here, Brother Hu was uneasy, so he put his own mistress in charge to keep an eye on things.

Tang Mo understood what Sister Ling meant.

She just smiled and gave a vague reply, saying nothing more.

There were quite a few people in the warehouse, but it was much quieter than one would expect.

It was as if everyone were mute, not speaking or making a sound. She had no idea what they were doing on their beds.

But soon, Tang Mo discovered there was a reason for it all.

Around seven o’clock that evening, the large warehouse door was opened again. Four men entered in two pairs, each pair carrying a huge wooden bucket.

One bucket was filled with cooked Exotic Beast Meat, the other with water.

The Exotic Beast Meat had clearly not been specially processed or cooked. It had been simply boiled, and it gave off a thick, foul stench.

Tang Mo finally knew where the heavy, strange smell in the warehouse was coming from. It seemed that every meal here consisted of meat from a Basic-level Mutant Beast.

The women got down from their beds of their own accord, then grabbed their basins from under a table.

The water bucket was large, but there were many people, so each person only received about a third of a basin of water.

Then they would go to the other bucket to receive a piece of meat. That was their entire ration for the day.

As a newcomer, Tang Mo naturally didn’t have a basin, and she didn’t go to collect the items.

”Where’s the new one?”

one of the men yelled, obviously calling for Tang Mo.

Tang Mo got off her bunk and walked over.

”This is your basin. Catch.”

Seeing Tang Mo approach, the man tossed a basin, identical to the ones the other women had, into her arms.

Only the last dregs of water were left at the bottom of the bucket. It was not only murky but also contained unidentifiable debris.

Nevertheless, Tang Mo still used the basin to scoop up that last bit of water and then took her piece of meat.

Just as she was about to head back, the man tossed her an already-opened package of crackers.

Tang Mo glanced at them. The crackers were already a little moldy.

’This must be the ”special care” Brother Hu mentioned when I arrived,’ she thought.

Tang Mo found it a little amusing. She never thought that she, a complete newcomer, would end up being the one receiving ”special attention.”

After all the items were distributed, several women in extremely revealing clothes that showed off their thighs gathered around the men who had delivered the food, pressing their bodies against them.

The men, who were clearly used to it, casually wrapped their arms around the waists of the women pressing against them, opened the door, and walked out.

When the door opened, Sister Ling went out with them.

Tang Mo saw clearly that Sister Ling didn’t receive any food or water. The men were respectful toward her. ’She must be going out to eat,’ Tang Mo figured.

The moment the door closed again, it was as if the warehouse had become a different world.

The once-quiet environment instantly became boisterous. The women crowded together, holding their meat and chattering excitedly.

Several people surrounded Tang Mo as well, their words all hinting at the same question: what was her background?

Almost all the women who gathered around had their eyes glued to the items in Tang Mo’s possession.

The meat, the water, and a bag of crackers—something they had never received before.

The greed in their eyes was raw and unconcealed.

Tang Mo placed the items on the lower bunk of her bed, then climbed onto the top bunk and sat cross-legged.

She wasn’t going to eat any of it, but the desire in the women’s eyes was too obvious, and she had no intention of giving it to them.

Ever heard of trying to feed a wolf you can never tame?

No matter how much you give some people, they will never be grateful.

However, she wouldn’t be staying here for more than a few days. To make her time here a little more comfortable, there was no need to start any conflicts with them.

It would be best to just pretend not to hear whatever they said.

She suddenly found herself missing the dead silence that reigned when Sister Ling was around.

’When is Sister Ling coming back?’ Tang Mo thought, realizing she actually missed her.

”Is she a mute or something?”

Soon, the women found Tang Mo’s silent, expressionless demeanor uninteresting and returned to their own bunks to eat.

They had seen her walk in so calmly and thought she was some unfathomable character, but it turned out she was just a clueless fool. No wonder.

After the crowd around Tang Mo had completely dispersed, a small, timid head poked through.

”You should eat quickly. Don’t give it to them. This is the only meal we get all day. If you don’t finish it, you won’t have any strength tomorrow.”

The girl who had squeezed her way over was about the same age as Tang Mo. Her features were delicate; she didn’t look like a girl who had struggled through the apocalypse, but rather like a fragile flower, completely out of place here.

The girl’s eyes were crystal clear, completely different from everyone else’s.

”Where’s your food?” Tang Mo asked, noticing the girl was empty-handed.

”It’s all in my tummy! If you don’t eat it immediately, it’ll get stolen.”

The girl patted her flat belly and smiled with her eyes narrowed, as if she didn’t feel her current situation was difficult at all.

Seeing the girl’s carefree and innocently charming demeanor, Tang Mo couldn’t help but smile as well.

’It’s true,’ she thought. ’Optimistic people always get by, no matter the environment, and they even manage to infect those around them with their happiness.’

Compared to the scheming or deeply bitter girls, Tang Mo found she much preferred this sweet, simple-minded one.

She patted the space next to her, indicating for the girl to sit beside her.

The girl sat down next to Tang Mo without any reservation. For some reason, nobody else here liked her, so she was overjoyed that someone was willing to talk to her.

”How long have you been here?”

Tang Mo initiated the conversation.

”A little over three months.”

”That woman from earlier is Sister Ling. She’s in charge of us. None of us dare to speak when she’s around. We’re afraid we’ll say or do something to make her unhappy. The consequences are terrible.”

Before Tang Mo could even ask, the girl started explaining.

”Sister Ling goes out for a while every evening. That period when she’s gone is the most relaxing and happiest time here.”

As she spoke of being relaxed and happy, an expression of pure contentment appeared on the girl’s face.

Tang Mo looked at the worldly-innocent girl. ’She must have been so well-protected before,’ she thought, ’to still be so carefree now.’
