Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 216: Chapter 206: Super High-level Mutant Beast

Qin Ling suddenly turned around, his gaze falling upon the still-bustling streets of S Base. Hawkers on both sides of the road were still shouting, selling the best parts of their recent kills, completely unaware of what was about to happen just beyond the wall.

”Take a guess. If we can’t stop the first wave of beasts and they break through, how long would it take to destroy this entire base?”

Qin Ling asked suddenly.

Construction on this base began even before the apocalypse started, consuming the blood, sweat, and tears of countless people.

Yet destroying it could be so easy.

”Given the destructive power of this horde of mutant beasts, three hours at most, and this place would become a ghost town.”

Wen Jianshu and Li Xian didn’t dare answer Qin Ling’s question. Only Tang Mo answered him seriously.

Heaven and earth are not benevolent; they treat all things as straw dogs.

Tang Mo knew what Qin Ling was lamenting. No matter how hard the people here tried to live, a single disaster could wipe out all their efforts.

If you weren’t strong enough, your fate would be in someone else’s hands, and there would be nothing you could do about it.

How truly tragic and pitiful.

The beast horde drew closer and closer to the base. Qin Ling and the others descended from the watchtower and went to the front of the phalanx, just behind the base’s main gate.

The enemy outside was powerful and terrifying, but they still had to open the gate.

They couldn’t just stand passively inside the city and wait for the beasts to smash the gate open before fighting back. Sometimes, taking the initiative meant seizing the advantage.

The walls of S Base were extremely sturdy, built from special materials.

The base also placed great importance on reinforcing the walls during routine maintenance, so it was nearly impossible for mutant beasts to break through them.

Qin Ling directed the Superpower Soldiers to loosely wrap several coils of iron chain, each as thick as a man’s arm, around the double doors.

This would allow the gate to open a crack just wide enough for one person to pass through, letting people out without allowing the mutant beasts to rush in quickly.

Inside, one hundred Superpower Soldiers were arranged in four rows behind the gate, ready to follow their superior’s commands at a moment’s notice.

Outside the gate, the electric fence and fire wall were already activated.

The electric fence could be maintained for 24 hours at most.

The fire wall, on the other hand, was fueled by a type of mutant beast fat stored by the base. They had plenty of it and weren’t afraid of running out.

This amount of time was more than enough.

”We can turn off the electric fence to let people out, but once the fire wall is lit, doesn’t that mean no one can get out either?”

This was a problem Tang Mo couldn’t figure out.

The electric fence was closest to the base gate, and Qin Ling held the switch, giving him control at all times.

The fire wall was beyond the electric fence. Once lit, the ring of fire blazed over two meters high, making it extremely difficult for anyone to pass.

”There’s a one-meter-wide section over there that burns at a lower temperature. The color of the flames is slightly different from the rest. Superpower users can pass through there without being injured.”

Number Two explained to his sister-in-law.

If Tang Mo could spot the problem at a glance, then naturally, the base’s designers would have thought of it as well.

In previous mutant beast sieges, the creatures would swarm and charge toward the most populated areas.

Just like the ones Tang Mo had led here last time.

They came looking for a fight and wouldn’t have stopped for anything.

But this time was different.

The seventy-odd mutant beasts came to a unanimous halt a dozen or so meters outside the fire wall.

With the two-meter-high flames blocking their view, everyone could only get a rough glimpse outside, even with the gate open.

As a Spirit Attribute Superpower User, however, Tang Mo could see clearly. In the middle of the dozens of mutant beasts sat a smaller one.

It occupied a position of honor, surrounded by the others. That had to be the Ultra-high-level Mutant Beast.

Only Spiritual Ability Users could determine a mutant beast’s attribute.

This was because they could sense the spiritual fluctuations from the Crystal Core within a mutant beast’s body, judging its level based on the magnitude of that energy.

The Ultra-high-level mutant beast looked like a fox, several times larger than Jingjing. Its entire body was fiery red, and it had three fluffy tails, each one larger than its body.

The mutant beast’s eyes stared fixedly in through the gate, and its gaze met Tang Mo’s.

’It can feel my spiritual power probing it. A Spiritual System mutant beast.’

Tang Mo immediately came to a conclusion.

Both were fox-shaped, and both were of the Spiritual System.

Tang Mo immediately thought of Jingjing. She called Xiao Tao and asked her to tell Jingjing to come find her at the base entrance.

She and Jingjing were connected telepathically, but the distance between them was too great right now. A phone was naturally more convenient.

At a critical moment before a major battle, wasting spiritual power was simply not worth it.

”Why have they stopped?”

It wasn’t just Tang Mo; many people, including those without Spirit Attribute superpowers, were now using their own skills to see the mutant beasts on the other side of the fire wall.

”They don’t want to throw their lives away either. But no matter what, stalling for time is what’s most advantageous for us right now.”

Qin Ling had obviously also seen the unusual red fox.

The superpower users in the base had already received the message and were rushing over.

Once all the superpower users in the base arrived, there was no way these seventy-plus High-level Mutant Beasts could break through, even with a siege.

’But this fox...’

For now, no one dared to act rashly. After all, no one knew what kind of power an Ultra-high-level mutant beast truly possessed.

The two sides faced off for a while, and then the mutant beasts made their move.

A four-legged, horse-like mutant beast charged forward alone. It quickly leaped over the fire wall.

The flames of the fire wall had a purple tinge, and the burning mutant beast oil gave off a scorching smell.

This fire was far more potent than a natural flame. Even though the horse-like mutant beast leaped high enough to barely be touched by the fire, the fur on its belly was still visibly burned to a blackened crisp.

After clearing the fire wall, the mutant beast clearly faltered for a moment from the pain.

But without hesitation, it charged directly at the electric fence.

”Lao San, go take care of it.”

Qin Ling motioned to Xu the Third, who was standing behind him.

Xu the Third immediately gripped the blade in his hand and went out the gate.

Everything happened too fast.

By the time Xu the Third stepped through the gate, the mutant beast had already hit the high-voltage electric fence.

The current made its whole body jolt. For three seconds, it was almost completely paralyzed, but it quickly recovered.

If the mutant beast had been at one hundred percent of its strength to begin with, it was now at seventy percent at most.

A High-level Mutant Beast at its peak wouldn’t have been a problem for Xu the Third, let alone one with only seventy percent of its strength left.

Qin Ling’s subordinates—Number Two, Lao San, Number Four, and Lao Wu—were all well-known names on the leaderboards.

Each of them had an attribute value over 2000. What was a mere High-level Mutant Beast to them?

Besides, Tang Mo had been observing the whole time, and this horse-like mutant beast was the weakest one in the entire horde.
