Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 231: Chapter 221: Money-Making Tool

Actually, Tang Mo had nodded in approval of Huaxi City’s policy.

’Isn’t this basically the pre-apocalypse version of a child protection law?’

The only difference was that the protected age was lowered to seven and under.

Although Tang Mo had never heard of a place called Huaxi City, she thought such a policy was excellent.

While Huaxia’s central base was currently S Base, the various regional Alliances were far from the center of power and had their own sets of corresponding regulations.

Tang Mo decided she would talk to Qin Ling about it later. S Base should implement a similar rule.

In the apocalypse, human morality had completely collapsed. The law of the jungle, where the strong preyed on the weak, was rampant everywhere.

Young human children, who had no ability to resist, were especially vulnerable and had no protection whatsoever.

They were like tiny ants that could be crushed with a simple pinch.

With the current turmoil of the apocalypse, everyone lived precariously, never knowing if they’d see the next day. Humanity’s desire to procreate was plummeting, making the protection of young children an urgent and immediate task.

Otherwise, if humanity lost its next generation, there would be no hope of a revival.

After learning about Huaxi City’s policy, Tang Mo had a rough idea of what the group in front of her was up to.

They were using a child’s injury to run an extortion scam on passersby.

She could roughly guess their line of thinking.

The wealth gap in the apocalypse was enormous. If they robbed people with low strength, those poor souls wouldn’t have anything valuable anyway.

But the wealthy and powerful were hard to deal with. Compared to risking their lives in a fight, an effortless extortion scam like this was far more appealing.

Even if people knew it was a scam, no one wanted to get entangled in such trouble for no reason. Most would just pay to make the problem go away.

If this scam was a mature, established operation, then this group definitely had more than just this one child.

Tang Mo looked at the nearly expressionless little girl before her, an inexplicable discomfort stirring in her heart.

Blood dripped from her arm, already forming a small puddle on the ground, but no one seemed to care.

”Does it hurt?”

Tang Mo asked.

The little girl was stunned. It was obvious that in all this time, no one had ever asked her that question.

For a moment, she didn’t know how to react and quickly shook her head.

Realizing that wasn’t right, she glanced timidly at the men, then started nodding her head forcefully.

”What if I don’t have anything?”

Tang Mo said, looking at the men.

’I’m definitely getting involved in this. The nation’s future generation isn’t something they can just harm on a whim.’

’They’ll have to pay a price.’

”Then don’t blame us for not being polite.”

Seeing that the woman before them looked thin and weak, and was all alone, the men had sinister ideas.

Women were currency these days. No matter how you sold them, it was always profitable.

Besides, this woman’s features were quite delicate. It wouldn’t be hard to sell her for a good price.

The men rolled up their sleeves, preparing to seize Tang Mo.

”Don’t, sirs. I’ll come with you.”

A smile suddenly appeared on Tang Mo’s face.

”???”

The men looked at each other, confused. What was this?

’Could it be that we’re just too charming?’

’So, are we still robbing her or not? This sudden departure from the script has us stumped, huh?’

When something seems amiss, it usually is. Tang Mo’s bizarre reaction left the men unsure of what to do.

”Sirs, I’m just so hungry. If I can get a bite to eat by going with you, I’ll do anything.”

Tang Mo’s words were suggestive, and the men immediately understood her meaning.

In truth, Tang Mo could have just fought them and used force to make them take her to their base.

But she was in unfamiliar territory, after all. She had no idea what the situation was like there or how strong they were.

Even though Tang Mo was now ranked number one on the Huaxia leaderboard, she always maintained the utmost caution. That was how you survived for a long time.

You can’t let your guard down anytime, especially when you’re outnumbered.

Besides, this journey had been rather boring. Tang Mo decided to treat this as her own little side quest.

Infiltrate the enemy’s den, rescue the nation’s budding flowers.

’Interesting. This kind of stimulating life is what makes things fun.’

She had grown a bit tired of the peaceful days. Tang Mo decided to find herself some excitement.

”Since you’re willing, that saves us a lot of trouble. Let’s go.”

It was nothing new for a woman in the apocalypse to sell herself for a meal.

The men took Tang Mo for someone who knew how to adapt to the circumstances and instantly relaxed.

Tang Mo said nothing, simply following obediently behind them. They left the road and boarded a dilapidated minibus hidden in the tall grass.

It was a miracle that such a decrepit vehicle could still run. No wonder Tang Mo hadn’t noticed these men earlier.

’I was too careless,’ Tang Mo silently reminded herself. ’I have to be more observant from now on.’

Tang Mo and the little girl sat in the back row, while the men drove and smoked in the front.

Although they didn’t bring back any food or Crystal Stones from this trip, they had brought back a decent-looking young woman. All in all, it was a gain. The men were in a pretty good mood, even humming a little tune.

The little girl clutched her injured arm with one hand, unable to stop herself from stealing glances at Tang Mo.

Finally, she couldn’t hold back any longer. With her uninjured hand, she grabbed Tang Mo and traced letters into her palm with a fingertip.

Don’t go. Danger.

’This little girl looks to be only five or six, yet she knows how to write!’

This surprised Tang Mo. She didn’t seem like a child these coarse men could have raised. She must have been abducted recently.

Tang Mo squeezed the little girl’s hand in return, looked her in the eyes, and nodded.

Trust me. I will save you.

That was the message Tang Mo’s eyes conveyed.

The little girl gazed into Tang Mo’s deep eyes and was momentarily stunned.

She didn’t know if it was her imagination, but she felt like the wound on her arm from the dagger wasn’t as painful anymore.

Of course, it wasn’t her imagination. It was Tang Mo’s spiritual power healing at work.

Otherwise, with that much blood loss, the child would have soon lost her arm.

How could Tang Mo stand by and watch the life of a child just a few years old be ruined?

Those men certainly wouldn’t care about the girl’s injury. As long as she didn’t die, they’d be thrilled if the wound got worse. A permanent disability would be even better, as it would let them extort more money next time.

The little girl was only a few years old. Since being abducted, it had been a long time since she had felt any care or love.

Tang Mo’s concern just now had made her want to cry, which was why she couldn’t help but try to warn this kind big sister.

She had seen the fates of too many women in that house, and she didn’t want this big sister, whom she liked, to end up the same way.

However, she found she couldn’t quite understand the look in this big sister’s eyes.

Unlike the dead, ashen eyes of those other women, this big sister’s eyes held a light.
