Reborn One Week Before the Apocalypse

Chapter 226: Chapter 216: Clean-up Work

The dozen or so remaining mutant beasts were already riddled with injuries and exhausted. Now that the Soul Beast’s Spiritual Control had suddenly vanished, each of the Advanced Mutant Beasts looked as if they’d lost their minds, standing there in a daze.

Who am I? Where am I? What am I doing?

This was the expression on every Advanced Mutant Beast’s face, which in turn left the army rushing out from the base completely bewildered and afraid to make a rash move.

The base’s electric fences and firewalls had been shut down, and nearly everyone had rushed outside.

Now, a large crowd of people stood before these mutant beasts. The beasts didn’t move, and neither did the people. They stared at each other, as if time itself had frozen.

”Sister-in-law, what’s going on with these mutant beasts?”

Xu the Third was completely baffled by the situation with these mutant beasts.

”That Ultra-high-level mutant beast’s Spiritual Control destroyed their brains. Now, they’re essentially brain-dead.”

Tang Mo explained.

”Stop staring. If you keep looking, you’ll start getting attached. Let’s get this over with.”

Mutant beasts that were brain-dead didn’t even qualify for the Beast Fighting Arena. Only the materials from their bodies were still useful.

S Base had survived this wave of Advanced Mutant Beasts, and the spoils were immense.

If the valuable materials from their bodies were processed properly, S Base’s overall strength would rise to a whole new level.

”Jingjing, is it still breathing?”

Tang Mo asked as she walked over to Jingjing, who was circling the fallen mutant beast.

”Wuu, just barely.”

The Soul Beast’s mouth was still moving. Jingjing lay down beside it, listening to what it was saying.

As a mutant beast itself, Jingjing could naturally understand the Soul Beast.

”Momo, it said the Spirit Power Pearl is incredibly powerful and that it underestimated its strength. It also said that the next time one of the pearls appears in the world, humanity won’t be so lucky.”

Jingjing translated the Soul Beast’s words for Tang Mo.

The Soul Beast’s words confirmed Tang Mo’s earlier suspicions.

This beast horde had happened precisely because she had fused with the Spirit Power Pearl yesterday.

This was the first time an Earth-rank Mutant Beast had appeared. It seemed there were already many terrifying creatures in this world unknown to humanity.

They were simply waiting for the Attribute Pearls to manifest, one by one, before baring their fangs and pouncing when humanity least expected it.

This beast horde had been a close call. If Tang Mo hadn’t been lucky enough to acquire that treasured axe back in the rainforest, they might not have made it through.

It seemed those Attribute Pearls weren’t so easy to obtain after all.

Having just reaped the rewards of the Spirit Power Pearl, Tang Mo came to a new realization.

’To survive in this apocalypse, one must constantly improve. Otherwise, you’ll be left behind by the faster-evolving mutant beasts and end up as their prey.’

A sense of urgency and constant vigilance were the two things you could never afford to lose if you wanted to survive in this apocalypse.

Even for a place as large as S Base, destruction could come in the blink of an eye.

”Momo, what do we do with this Soul Beast? How is it still not dead?”

Jingjing poked at the Soul Beast’s fur with its little paw.

Tang Mo took out Wind Breaker and slit the Soul Beast’s throat in a single slash.

’All creatures have their own nature. She had no reason to keep a mutant beast as sinister and vicious as this Soul Beast alive. She wouldn’t want to form a contract with it even if she could.’

With the Soul Beast’s spiritual power, it could have easily controlled those mutant beasts without destroying their brains.

But it didn’t.

If it could be so cruel to its own kind, what would it do to an Alien Race?

The dozen or so Advanced Mutant Beasts were quickly finished off. People from the base would handle the cleanup.

In the end, Tang Mo was escorted back into S Base, surrounded by a crowd.

Everyone looked at her with sparkling eyes, their faces filled with adoration.

Standing amidst the crowd and looking at their shining eyes, the first thing that flashed through Tang Mo’s mind wasn’t pride or arrogance.

It was herself from her past life.

Back then, people had shunned her as if she were vermin.

As if she were something filthy, everyone looked at her with contempt and disgust, as if her very existence was a mistake.

’In the apocalypse, for a useless person to be alive was, in itself, a mistake—a waste of resources.’

’The world had never been the one to change. It was just as unforgiving and cold as ever. The only one who had changed was me.’

When Tang Mo returned to the base, Qin Ling immediately pulled her over for a thorough inspection, just like that night he had climbed the wall into her room to check on her.

He only let her go after confirming that all the blood on her was from the mutant beasts.

”Momo, all that matters is you’re back safe! Uncle is so proud of you!”

Wen Jianshu swelled with pride over Tang Mo’s battle performance. At this moment, he wished she were his own daughter.

In contrast to the unconcealed excitement on Wen Jianshu’s face,

Tang Mo turned to look at Qin Ling, whose expression was solemn and complex.

The solemnity was from his fear of something happening to her; from the moment Tang Mo had gone out to fight, Qin Ling’s heart hadn’t rested.

The complexity came from a sense of helplessness at his own inadequacy, at being unable to protect the woman he loved.

Even though the base was safe, they had suffered no losses, and had even profited handsomely, Qin Ling couldn’t feel a shred of happiness.

A corner of the ice around Tang Mo’s heart melted a little. She quietly reached for Qin Ling’s hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.

Feeling the warmth in his palm, Qin Ling quickly squeezed back, his expression instantly changing from cloudy to sunny.

He was like a joyous fawn, ready to break into a run.

There was no need for so many people to stick around for the cleanup, so everyone quickly dispersed to their homes to rest.

This was especially true for those who had fought; the spiritual power attack had left them dizzy, and they still hadn’t recovered.

Tang Mo was naturally exhausted. After returning home, she took a shower and lay down on the bed with Jingjing in her arms to rest.

When she opened her eyes again, it was already three o’clock the next morning.

Because the rankings had changed so drastically the previous day, Tang Mo subconsciously opened the leaderboards again.

Her name was still sitting high in the number one spot, followed by a unique golden icon.

Closing the leaderboards, Tang Mo opened the Mutant Beast Encyclopedia tab.

She had already placed the Soul Beast’s corpse into her Space.

’The Soul Beast is dead, so it should appear in the encyclopedia now.’

Sure enough, Tang Mo found the soul fox in the encyclopedia.

The description that followed was basically the same as what Jingjing had said.

Not only that, but a new section explaining the mutant beast ranking system had been added to the encyclopedia.

It stated that mutant beasts were divided into six ranks: Divine-level Mutant Beast, Heavenly Rank Mutant Beast, Earth-rank Mutant Beast, Advanced Mutant Beast, Intermediate Beast, and Basic-level Mutant Beast.

Tang Mo was certain this description had only been updated today.

This further confirmed how uncontrollable the ID Watch was.

’This is definitely not something the Alliance could have known. Yet the information on this watch already surpasses the scope of human knowledge.’

’Just what kind of mysterious power is controlling all of this?’

For the first time, Tang Mo began to question the origin of this apocalypse.
