Apocalypse: Master of Soul Beasts

On the devastated battlefield, charred marks from lightning strikes and bottomless pits were everywhere.

Fortunately, as the victor between the chubby man and Tang Haofei was decided, the earth-shattering combat noises subsided, and silence returned.

The Almighty Demon Vine on Wen Yu’s right hand slowly extended, spontaneously coiling around the deceased chubby man’s body. Wen Yu could feel a steady flow of Origin Energy from the Universe of Immortals and Heroes entering him.

”He’s of a divine beast lineage!” Tang Haofei, standing nearby, seemed to guess Wen Yu’s intentions. His mangled mouth opened, and he mumbled the words with difficulty.

”Yes.” Wen Yu nodded.

Indeed, the chubby man had possessed a significant amount of Origin Energy, confirming he was of a divine beast lineage. However, the Almighty Demon Vine had a certain conversion ratio, whether it was absorbing Origin Energy from the Universe of Immortals and Heroes or demon flesh to enhance its host’s physical constitution limits. There was a considerable amount of energy loss. The Origin Energy a single individual of a divine beast lineage could provide was not enough to make up for the deficit in Wen Yu’s own Origin Energy. Besides, his Soul Battlefield left no corpses behind...

It seemed that replenishing his Origin Energy and achieving Evolution into a divine beast lineage of the Universe of Immortals and Heroes would still have to depend on Tang Haofei.

Coming to this conclusion, Wen Yu lifted his head and looked at Tang Haofei’s condition again. Disgusting buds of flesh were already sprouting from his wounds, and terrifying blood scabs had formed. Although Tang Haofei still looked half-dead, judging from his gaze and the increasing fluency of his speech, Old Tang’s condition had transitioned from ’near death’ to ’stabilized, though still critical,’ in just a few minutes.

Immense energy fluctuations and a rampant aura surged from him; the severely injured Tang Haofei couldn’t even control his own momentum or these internal energy waves. However, this proved to be a blessing in disguise. In this hunting ground, Wen Yu and Tang Haofei had to contend not only with the hostility of the natives from the Universe of Immortals and Heroes but also with attacks from the Demon Tribe! Displaying one’s fangs and blades at the right moment could help avoid unnecessary conflict—Wen Yu’s Soul Battlefield, after all, wasn’t particularly effective against Demon Fiends.

Intelligence relayed by Victor’s Double Body confirmed Wen Yu’s suspicions.

”Boss, those Demon Fiends have been stationary ever since the fighting started here!”

The ’few Demon Fiends’ Victor referred to were the Demon Tribe Patrol Team Wen Yu had encountered earlier. When the fight broke out, Wen Yu had already dispatched Victor’s Double Body to monitor this Demon Tribe squad’s movements. Wen Yu didn’t know what these Demon Fiends were plotting, but judging by their current behavior, this particular Demon Tribe squad clearly had some plan in mind.

This suited Wen Yu perfectly. Once Tang Haofei recovered, Wen Yu would immediately take him to capture this Demon Tribe squad. If his status as Young Master yielded no benefits, he would take them by force!

In this Demon Tribe-occupied zone, every moving Demon Fiend and native of the Universe of Immortals and Heroes was a walking treasure trove for increasing physical constitution limits and for Origin Energy!

The chubby man’s corpse beside him visibly shriveled. Once all the Origin Energy within the body was absorbed, the Almighty Demon Vine gracefully retracted its tendrils, returning to Wen Yu’s right hand.

”What a pity, oh, what a pity... He was a respectable opponent...” Tang Haofei, his own injuries still far from healed, sighed at the gruesome sight of the chubby man’s desiccated corpse. This elicited a sneer from Wen Yu.

”Quite the act. You’re the one who killed him!”

”I had no choice…” Tang Haofei mumbled. ”Actually, he knew he couldn’t escape this time. At the very end, the fellow went easy on me; otherwise, I would have truly died.”

Judging by Tang Haofei’s solemn expression, this might have been true. However, he quickly dismissed such fleeting thoughts. People like Wen Yu and Tang Haofei might feel a flicker of sympathy, but compassion for an opponent? That was utter nonsense. Whatever the chubby man had been thinking in his final moments, dead was dead! And the dead, especially a dead enemy, weren’t worth wasting emotions on.

”Right, you got the Compass, didn’t you?” Tang Haofei stated his assessment, his face serious. ”Their objective this time was crystal clear: to kill you. I don’t know how many other squads share that goal. Plus, we might have underestimated the strength of these natives from the Universe of Immortals and Heroes.”

”This chubby fellow was formidable, yet relatively unknown... If a full squad like that came at us, and if they happened to have abilities that could counter your Soul Battlefield, the fight would be incredibly tough!”

”I understand.” Wen Yu’s expression also grew solemn. One should always consider defeat before victory. Countering the Soul Battlefield had stringent requirements, yet Wen Yu couldn’t guarantee that no such counters existed—especially given the overwhelming strength of these natives from the Universe of Immortals and Heroes. If the Soul Battlefield worked, everything would be simple. But if it failed, how they should fight would become a critical problem for him and Tang Haofei.

With this in mind, Wen Yu retrieved the Compass from his space ring. He studied the light spots on it carefully while explaining to Tang Haofei, ”The objectives of these squads differ. Currently, only Heluo’s squad is confirmed to be targeting me. The rest are targeting other squads…”

Wen Yu paused. ”No, they might be using that as a cover. Look at this.”

Finished speaking, Wen Yu walked over to Tang Haofei, Compass in hand. He ignored the thick stench of blood emanating from Tang Haofei and the blood pooling on the ground, sitting down directly in the crimson mess as he pointed to the nearest light spots.

”These eight light spots here, and these four here, are the closest to us. While you were fighting that chubby guy, I observed the movements of these two squads. The four-man squad initially had a clear objective: they were after the eight-man squad. I couldn’t discern the eight-man squad’s target; they seemed to be wandering aimlessly, yet they steadily drew nearer to us…

”Furthermore, since a short while ago, this four-man squad’s movements have also become erratic. They must have realized the fact that ’each squad has a different target’!”

Hearing Wen Yu’s analysis, Tang Haofei frowned, scrutinizing the Compass. After a long moment, Old Tang gave a wry smile. ”I can’t make heads or tails of it. I really can’t tell which one is after you…”
