Chapter 899: Chapter 29: Roadblock

Su Xiao bent down and crawled through the hole in the wall into the laboratory.

”Finally found the researcher. Is this place a maze?”

As Su Xiao walked into the laboratory, blood dripped from the blade of Dragon Slash. He had just encountered a team of Hunting Dog Troops. Those guys were brainwashed, making it very difficult to obtain information from them.

Just as Su Xiao entered the lab, a member of the Hunting Dog Troops in the room raised his rifle, aiming it at Su Xiao. A Counter Shield beside Su Xiao flew out, shooting towards the Hunting Dog Troops member. During the swift flight, the shield quickly split into dozens of pieces, resembling sharp blades.

Thud, thud...

The Hunting Dog Troops member holding the rifle was shot to pieces. This was a new application Su Xiao developed for the Counter Shield. It’s not very practical in combat but effective against grunts.

”You, you’re the invader?”

A researcher sat on the ground, his legs flailing as he scrambled back, soon pressing against the wall.

Su Xiao lightly tapped the ground, disappearing from the researcher’s sight and reappearing in front of him.

”The map of this place...”

Just as he was about to ask, Su Xiao suddenly realized he might not need a map. Understanding the layout was a habit he developed, but now, directly asking for Mokuhara Genki’s position seemed more practical.

”Where is Mokuhara Genki?”

As soon as Su Xiao finished speaking, the researcher raised his hands, speaking rapidly, ”I know the map here very well. Mokuhara Genki must be taking refuge in the control room. It has a level 4 defense system. I can take you there.”

It could be said that this young researcher’s survival instinct was strong. Not only did he provide the information Su Xiao wanted, but he even revealed Mokuhara Genki’s habits, age, and height. He just didn’t know the color of Mokuhara Genki’s underwear; otherwise, he would have told that too.

Most of Su Xiao’s enemies are tough nuts, but there aren’t many like this soft eggplant.

”Take me to him, and I’ll ensure you don’t die.”

”Alright, sir, rest assured, I will fully cooperate.”

The soft eggplant forced a smile. He was young with a bright future and certainly wouldn’t die for Mokuhara Genki.

The soft eggplant stood up, trembling as he walked to the lab door. He even took the ID card from his team leader’s corpse, which served as both a key card and identification. The higher your status, the freer you are in the research institute.

When Su Xiao passed by a glass pillar in the lab, he paused. He saw the clone of Misaka Mikoto. The soft eggplant beside him noticed and immediately began to explain.

”This is a clone of Level 5 superpower user Misaka Mikoto, part of the ’Absolute Power User Evolution Plan.’ A total of 20,000 copies were cloned. According to the plan, as long as the first-ranked One-Way Street kills the third-ranked Misaka Mikoto 128 times in different battlefields, he can evolve to a Level 6 Absolute Power User. Since it’s impossible to have 128 Misaka Mikotos, 20,000 clones were used instead. If you want to know more about the ’Absolute Power User Evolution Plan,’ I can explain it in detail.”

The soft eggplant was thoroughly exhibiting the mindset of a traitor; before Su Xiao even asked, he revealed everything about the ’Absolute Power User Plan.’

”Not interested, lead the way.”

”This way.”

With the soft eggplant leading the way, Su Xiao’s infiltration into the research institute progressed significantly faster. After bypassing numerous defense mechanisms, he quickly reached the third level of the institute, where the control room was located.

Su Xiao shattered a half-meter thick metal isolation door with a few slashes from Dragon Slash. This thing was like paper under his attacks. Ahead was a spacious metal room.

Clank, clank...

The sound of metal colliding came from the spacious room. Several robots, over five meters tall, stood in the room, conservatively estimated at over sixty units.

Seeing those towering robots, the soft eggplant wavered, contemplating whether to return to Mokuhara Genki’s camp.

...

In the control room on the third level of the research institute, a group of researchers watched a large screen in the control room displaying the area where Su Xiao was located.

”There’s no problem with this setup. The DX-794M Type Combat Mech is not something humans can defeat. Even if he’s a Level 5 body-enhanced superpower user, he will be torn to pieces by the combat mechs.”

One researcher sipped slowly from a cup of coffee in his hand; he was the developer of these mechs.

”Landy, your combat mechs are quite decent.”

An old man, disheveled and wrinkled, spoke. He was Mokuhara Genki.

”Of course. Even though this incident caused significant losses, it also proves that combat mechs are the future of humanity, not superpowers. Developing superpowers is too slow, while mechs can be mass-produced.”

”Short-sighted.”

Mokuhara Genki sneered, clearly not caring about the researcher’s displeased expression.

”Originally, I prepared a final defense plan, but it seems unnecessary now. You’ve wasted 12 minutes and 35 seconds of my research time.”

Mokuhara Genki glanced at the silver briefcase in his hand, hesitating about whether to abandon it. Because of it, his relationship with Aleister had deteriorated rapidly.

”He, he, he, he...”

A researcher pointed at the large screen, his finger trembling.

”What’s the panic...”

With a crash, the mech-developing researcher’s coffee cup fell from his hand. On the screen, tattered mechs were scattered across the room, a man with a long knife standing among the debris, flicking bullets from his collar.

The man holding the long knife looked up, his piercing gaze causing all the researchers in the control room to take a step back.

With a crackle, the large screen went black as the monitor was destroyed,

Boom! Boom!

Muffled rumbles resounded from the third level of the research institute, as if someone was tearing it down.

Boom!

The roaring sounds grew nearer and nearer to the control room, and Mokuhara Genki’s expression became grim.

”We must use that, even though it’s unruly, its ability is powerful.”

Mokuhara Genki whispered something to a researcher next to him, who clearly showed resistance.

”Do we really have to resort to that experiment subject? He...”

”Hurry up, do you want to die?”

”Yes.”

The researcher next to Mokuhara Genki opened the control room door and ran towards a nearby lounge.

...

Tat-tat-tat, several machine guns opened fire on Su Xiao. He slashed repeatedly with his long knife, deflecting a rain of bullets.

Pale blue blade aura flew out, easily slicing through the machine guns, silencing them.

Su Xiao walked through a corridor strewn with bullets, puzzled by the relatively weak defense mechanisms. Although numerous, they were only capable of stopping Level 4 superpower users, and could never block him.

The difficulty of the third-tier promotion task was set at Level 23. This defensively weak experimental institution didn’t reach Level 23 difficulty; could the difficulty lie in finding the Mortal Soul Code’s clues?

Most likely. After all, Su Xiao had been searching for clues to the Mortal Soul Code for ages, barely escaping with his life when faced with Only Flash from Kamijou Fire Weave.

Now the control room was just within reach. Once he located Mokuhara Genki, the Mortal Soul Code would be practically his.

Su Xiao stepped towards the control room; the high-strength glass door wouldn’t stop him.

”Hey, you’re the experiment subject this time? You don’t look like much.”

A white-haired ”youth” with hands in his pockets strolled out from the corridor beside the control room; his pupils were red, and his frame was gaunt, like he was malnourished. He gazed at Su Xiao with a mocking smile.

”I see, that makes the task difficulty seem reasonable.”

Su Xiao stretched his muscles, activating his Release of Breath ability, with a faint red aura spreading around him.

Crack.

Cracks appeared on the metal walls around him. Witnessing this, the white-haired youth slammed the ground with a foot, and with a boom, the metal floor cracked underfoot.
