Chapter 873: Chapter 3: Item

The green beam almost attacked instantly, faster than one could imagine.

Bang!

The green light mixed with flames illuminated the night sky. The rooftop where Su Xiao stood had a hole several meters in diameter blasted into it. The edges of the hole, made of steel and concrete, were glowing red hot, showcasing just how high the temperature of that green beam was.

A slender woman in a purple dress was standing in an alleyway dozens of meters away. She had long brown wavy hair and looked to be in her twenties. She yawned, as if finding this task somewhat boring.

”It’s done. This job was really simple.”

The woman’s name was Maiye Shenli, a Lv.5 superpower user, ranked fourth in Academy City’s superpower rankings. Her ability was Atomic Breakdown, and she was currently part of Item. ’Item’ was a dark organization under the Academy City Council, mainly responsible for suppressing riots, assassinations, and clearing out foreign invaders – all the work that couldn’t see the light of day.

This time, their task was to clear out foreign invaders, specifically to capture or kill Su Xiao. Maiye Shenli chose to go straight to ’kill.’ She had a sweet appearance but was exceptionally ruthless.

Beside Maiye Shenli stood two more girls. One wore an orange short top with a hood. This girl stood with her hands in her pockets and the hood covering her head. Due to the darkness of the alley and the hood’s concealment, her features were unclear. However, judging by her height, she was quite young, perhaps a middle or even elementary school student.

The other girl had a head full of wavy golden hair, wore a black cap, and was dressed in a white short skirt. Judging by her age, she was likely a high school student.

The one wearing the hood was ’Item’ member Juanki Most-Loved, and the one with golden wavy hair was Flenda Severen; both were members of Item.

The Item organization had a characteristic: it consisted entirely of women, all five members, with four being ability users.

All three Item members in the alley wore wireless earphones. The fourth member, a perception type, named Tanghu Rehou, could expand her perception range to an extreme degree after taking drugs. However, her perception had limitations and could only detect ability users. She identified the enemy’s position by sensing other ability users’ AIM fields, which were unique to ability users.

However, after taking the drugs, Tanghu Rehou’s abilities were greatly enhanced. Within a certain range, even if the enemy wasn’t an ability user, she could still locate them through the surrounding AIM fields.

”Still alive.”

A sleepy, drowsy voice came through Maiye Shenli’s earphones, sounding as if Tanghu Rehou might fall asleep at any moment.

”Not dead?”

Maiye Shenli was a bit surprised. She could have sworn that the enemy had taken a direct hit from her beam cannon, targeting the head based on its trajectory.

Across the street, at the rooftop, as the firelight faded, a cracked light blue energy shield was slowly dispersing into the air. This was a 200-point strength energy shield, shattered by one hit.

”Tanghu, where is the enemy?”

Maiye Shenli pressed her fingertips against her earphones, her eyes quickly scanning the surroundings.

”Above...your head.”

As soon as she finished speaking, a crisp sound of a knife rang out.

Clang!

A light blue blade aura came slashing down from the sky with incredible speed, aiming directly at Maiye Shenli.

At the same time, a petite figure leaped up; it was the hooded Juanki Most-Loved. With her hands clasped together, she met the blade aura head-on.

Juanki Most-Loved’s slender arms made contact with the blade aura, and with a crack, an invisible armor shattered, dispersing the blade aura.

Juanki Most-Loved was a Lv.4 great power user with the ability of nitrogen armor. She could form an invisible nitrogen armor several centimeters thick around her body, both defensive and offensive. Despite her childlike size, she was essentially a human Gundam, working for the Item organization, turning her into a killing machine at such a young age.

As the nitrogen armor shattered, Juanki Most-Loved pulled an iron canister from her waist, quickly pulling the tab. With a hiss, liquid nitrogen sprayed from the canister, forming a new, thicker nitrogen armor.

”What just happened?”

The nearby golden-haired girl Flenda Severen looked bewildered. Her superpower was unknown; she relied on explosives in combat. However, she didn’t carry a backpack or the like, so the bombs were likely part of her ability.

Whew.

A man in a black windbreaker landed not far in front of the three women. As he touched down, a faint red airwave spread out, sweeping over Maiye Shenli and the others.

Maiye Shenli’s long brown hair was swept up. At that moment, her pupils rapidly contracted, her heartbeat quickened, and her muscles instinctively relaxed.

In the split-second Maiye Shenli was distracted, a dazzling blade flash suddenly appeared before her!

Almost instinctively, Maiye Shenli formed a green light barrier in front of her. This was the Atomic Breakdown ability, with the green barrier having high temperature, corrosion, and decomposition capabilities.

A long knife came to an abrupt stop in front of the green light barrier, less than 30 centimeters away from Maiye Shenli’s throat.

Su Xiao, holding the Dragon Slash, stopped his attack. Although the Dragon Slash could withstand the Atomic Breakdown ability, its durability would be significantly reduced. This world had just begun, and if the Dragon Slash suffered severe damage, further battles would be impossible.

Su Xiao recognized Maiye Shenli; she was ranked fourth among superpower users, though the official rankings weren’t entirely reliable.

Su Xiao leapt back, sizing up the three before him.

After initial contact with the superpower users, Su Xiao noted several things: first, the superpower users had high attack power, and their attacks came without warning or detectable intent, which could relate to Maiye Shenli’s abilities.

Second, the superpower users had acute perception, at least with strong dynamic vision. This probably resulted from long-term superpower development, with high brain activity naturally producing these abilities.

Third, the physical strength of superpower users wasn’t particularly weak, with certain differences based on abilities. Just now, Su Xiao used his active ability Release of Breath, dealing damage worth 100 points plus 5 times his willpower, ignoring armor/magic resistance/shields/equipment defense.

Among the three opponents, the wavy golden-haired girl, Flenda Severen, was coughing up blood, indicating one thing: superpower users weren’t easy to kill. If their physical strength were that of ordinary people, they’d be instantly dead from the damage of Release of Breath.

There were several possibilities: the strength of the superpower might increase life value or reduce damage. Su Xiao leaned towards the idea that it increased life value.

If superpower users were just a bunch of weaklings, then this world’s difficulty wouldn’t reach the third tier.

After the initial engagement, Su Xiao gathered a lot of intel, and he practically guessed the purpose of their arrival—it was likely sent by Aleister Crowley.

In the alley, Maiye Shenli extended her hands, forming a green barrier ahead, blocking the alley. When the green barrier touched the walls, there were clear signs of melting and decomposition.

”Something’s not right with this guy. Is this superpower? He’s more like Superman!”

Blood trickled down the corner of Maiye Shenli’s mouth, her legs trembling. Her instincts seemed to scream at her to run, to get out of there as fast as possible.
