Chapter 792: Chapter 23: Unmatched

The high-temperature steam on the fortress has completely dissipated.

Woo woo woo～

The war horn sounds. For this kind of high-slope battle, seizing the high ground formed by the fortress is most important.

The Imperial Army surged up the slope like a tide, with rows of heavy shield soldiers and spear soldiers in mixed formations in front, a formation suitable for charging on any terrain.

On the other side of the fortress, the Tribal Army also began their charge, this time numbering more than 200,000.

Under normal circumstances, the same number of Tribal Army soldiers are no match for the Imperial Army. This time it’s different—the over 200,000 Tribal Army soldiers are elite troops, not the miscellaneous troops from the previous battle.

At the forefront of the Tribal Army were mostly Beastmen, but standing at the very front were not Beastmen, but a line of Dwarves holding heavy shields one meter high.

There were two rows of these dwarf heavy shield soldiers, and behind them was a row of Goblins—yes, those cowardly Goblins.

These Goblins carried no weapons and were covered in small green phosphorus burning bottles.

Both armies set foot on the slopes on either side of the fortress simultaneously, the momentum of hundreds of thousands of soldiers charging at the same time is astounding.

A bird’s-eye view from above would reveal that the Empire and Tribe charged each other like two monstrous waves.

The two waves surged over the slopes, finally colliding at the top of the Black Soil Fortress.

The sounds of clicking and cracking merged into one, followed by screams and the shattering sound of ’green phosphorus burning bottles’.

The Imperial Army stuck to their usual strategy, with heavy shield soldiers in front and spear soldiers behind, whose spears probed through the gaps beside the shields to pierce the foremost Tribal Army soldiers.

This tried-and-true tactic met with a setback today. The dwarf heavy shield soldiers at the front of the Tribal Army raised their shields. A one-meter-high shield might seem laughable, but what if two shields are connected up and down?

A two-meter-high shield wall appeared in front of the Imperial Army. The spears of the spear soldiers struck the shield, causing their hands to go numb, with some spears even breaking.

The dwarf heavy shield soldiers successfully withstood the Imperial Army’s shield and spear formations. Goblin throwers hiding behind the dwarf shields began hurling ’small green phosphorus burning bottles’ at the Imperial Army.

Pop, pop...

Green phosphorus fire formed a line of flame, the frontline combination of shield and spear soldiers in the Imperial Army taking massive casualties.

The green phosphorus fire soon dissipated, and the second wave of Imperial charging arrived, each soldier wielding a long-handle warhammer and swinging it toward the double-layered shields in front of them.

Bam, bam, bam...

The battlefield sounded like blacksmithing as numerous dwarf heavy shield soldiers vomited blood and withdrew.

Whoosh～

The Elven Clan’s arrow rain arced through the sky, aiming for the densest part of the Tribal Army.

Buzz～

Crossbow arrow cutters met the arrow rain. This time, the Imperial Army faced off against the elite Tribal Army, equipped with numerous ’City Defender Heavy Crossbows’. Though cumbersome and costly, the Mountain Dwarf King personally defended the Black Soil Fortress. His army would naturally be equipped with such devices, especially since the Giant Trolls had resolved the issue of their transport, and despite the high cost, the Dwarves had no alternative. Therefore, they could only equip the elite troops.

The crossbow arrow cutters shredded the arrow rain into fragments scattered across the sky. Carlos, having already slain dozens of enemies, watched this, helpless. This opponent was unlike any before, even with equal troop numbers he could not guarantee a sure victory.

In the rear, Su Xiao advanced alongside the army, surrounded by roaring Imperial soldiers, which severely affected his perception of the surroundings.

On the fortress, the two armies clashed like hot iron against ice. The frontline soldiers quickly fell, immediately replaced by those behind them—the carnage was unimaginable.

Now it was a matter of who could drive back the other side, as the losing side would forfeit the Black Soil Fortress.

After about ten minutes, Su Xiao finally reached the hardened lava slope, not due to a lack of speed, but because the fortress couldn’t accommodate tens of thousands of soldiers. Only after one wave died could the soldiers behind advance.

As soon as Su Xiao stepped onto the lava slope, he felt a warm sensation beneath his feet, indicating it hadn’t cooled yet.

Moreover, he felt a bit slippery underfoot. Looking down, he saw the hardened lava slope stained crimson, with red liquid flowing down like a shallow red river—the blood of the soldiers who perished above the fortress.

The rivers of blood created the scene as it is now. Su Xiao walked upon his comrades’ blood to ascend the fortress.

At the top of the fortress.

”For the tribe!”

A Beastman soldier, covered in wounds, leapt up, slashing a curved knife at a human soldier.

The human soldier, eyes red, charged forward. The enemy’s conviction was strong, but his was equally steadfast. He fought for the Empire, for his family, and for ensuring future generations could thrive on bountiful lands.

Splurt!

Blood splattered, with both Beastman and human soldier’s weapons cutting into each other’s necks. Roaring, they pressed down, blood spurting wildly, before both fell into the pile of corpses at their feet.

Now the obsidian ground of the Black Soil Fortress was no longer visible, as the rapidly dying soldiers from both sides piled into a mountain of corpses atop which the battle raged.

The deceased Beastman soldier’s shout, ”For the tribe,” inflamed the surrounding Tribal soldiers, who saw nothing but their enemies, holding a singular belief to kill them.

On the battlefield, emotions unrelated to killing had no place—tearing each other apart was the only thought on the soldiers’ minds.

The sounds of killing pierced the sky. As the morning sun did not rise, perhaps even the heavens couldn’t bear to witness this inhuman battle. The sky was shrouded in dark clouds, and the rumble of thunder echoed.

Su Xiao was not charging up to the top of the Black Soil Fortress by himself; the packed masses of soldiers squeezed him up.

He quickly climbed the towering mountain of corpses, finally seeing the Tribal soldiers.

A Counter Shield with a strength of 500 surrounded Su Xiao, allowing him thanks to his Soul Eater Talent to freely expend mana value on the battlefield, unleashing his full combat strength.

A Beastman soldier confronted Su Xiao. This soldier appeared markedly stronger than the Beastmen from the previous battle, clad in full metal armor, even wearing a battle helm.

Seeing this Beastman’s attire, Su Xiao realized these Beastmen were different from those of the last battle.

The Beastman soldier roared and charged. To ordinary people, he was as quick as a specter, but in Su Xiao’s eyes, he was too slow.

The Beastman soldier swung his heavy sword, stained with bits of flesh, toward Su Xiao’s neck. Su Xiao neither dodged nor avoided it.

Ding!

The Beastman soldier’s palm went numb, stumbling back, a glint of blade filling his vision.

”Wol...”

Dragon Slash sliced through the air, slashing into the Beastman’s armor. The refined steel armor was easily cut through, the blade effortlessly cleaving muscle, bone, and organs.

Splurt.

Dragon Slash sliced open the back armor of the Beastman soldier from the inside, the blade carrying a stream of blood, splitting the Beastman into two from the chest.

The Beastman’s halved body fell onto the pile of corpses.

Su Xiao didn’t look at him. The Dragon Slash’s formidable sharpness of 32 easily cut through the enemy’s defenses and flesh, though Su Xiao sensed a trace of resistance. Do not underestimate it; if slaying a normal Beastman cost 0.1 stamina, then killing this type might cost 0.2-0.3 stamina.

Of course, this is only an assumption. Su Xiao concluded that this battle was not on the same level as the previous war.

Su Xiao stomped on the dead bodies below, advancing straight into the Tribal ranks. Ordinary soldiers doing this would be suicidal, but Su Xiao could kill even more enemies.

Ring Break.

Clang!

A ring-shaped blade aura spread out, cutting a large swath of Tribal soldiers’ bodies in half, and Su Xiao charged deeper into the densely packed Tribal Army.

Blade aura crisscrossed, severed limbs flying. With plenty of mana, Su Xiao seemed invincible, no Tribal soldier could withstand even a single strike. He would sense the strength of the enemy’s aura, and if strong, activate Blue Steel Shadow the moment he struck, turning it off immediately after killing the foe.

Minutes later, Su Xiao had fought his way to the slope opposite the Black Soil Fortress, surrounded by Tribal troops. Using the path he carved out, dozens of Imperial soldiers joined him in reaching the opposite slope. However, within only twenty or so seconds, those Imperial soldiers were hacked down by the overwhelming numbers of Tribal troops surrounding them.

Su Xiao’s Counter Shield had endured countless strikes, shattering with a crunch, but a new Counter Shield appeared instantly. On the battlefield, mana value was the last thing he lacked.
