Chapter 791: Chapter 22: Iron and Blood

Gulu gulu...

A large number of bubbles appeared in the lava beneath the fortress, and the Imperial Army noticed this change.

Carlos smiled, the situation was proceeding according to his planned strategy.

”After waiting for so long, it’s finally ready, Anna, go ahead.”

Carlos seemed to be speaking to someone unknown.

”Okay.”

A ethereal female voice came, and it seemed that there was an invisible woman near Carlos.

After about a few dozen seconds, the bubbling lava beneath the fortress stopped churning and began to solidify.

Crack, crack.

The solidified lava cracked, and these cracks were not chaotic but formed a chain of a large-scale alchemy array.

Rumble, rumble, rumble...

The ground within several kilometers began to shake.

Boom!

The solidified lava layer shattered, and hotter lava gushed from the cracks in the lava layer, spewing outwards like fountains.

Gulu gulu...

The lava flowed down the slope, and the Imperial soldiers not far from it immediately retreated.

The lava continued to surge upwards and flow down the slope. Within just a few seconds, the area beneath the fortress had already formed a rolling lava slope.

At the back of the battlefield, Carlos’s deputy stood at a high point watching the lava slope, holding a black slate engraved with a very precise alchemy array.

”The height is not enough yet.”

The deputy’s jaw muscles protruded. He clearly saw the lava beneath the fortress starting to devour the Imperial Army, screams filled the air.

”Not enough yet.”

Deputy Rona’s eyes were somewhat malicious. At this moment, a large number of Imperial soldiers were being swallowed by the lava.

If the soldiers had been warned in advance, casualties could have been reduced significantly, but that would have greatly risked exposing the plan, leading to potentially more deaths.

The screams of soldiers being incinerated by lava traveled far, astounding not just the ordinary Imperial officers but even the Tribal Army on the fortress.

”Carlos, this madman!”

Minotaur Amst’s cheeks twitched, understanding some of Carlos’s ruthlessness, yet not expecting him to be this merciless, using soldiers’ lives to execute a plan.

Gulu gulu...

The higher the lava surged, the more it flowed down the slope, resulting in heavier casualties for the Imperial Army.

Soon, the Tribal Army on the fortress felt the searing heat of the lava, with hair and beards singeing, prompting them to retreat. If the lava surged onto the fortress, they would be doomed.

Minotaur Amst did not retreat because he believed that regardless of how insane Carlos was, he wouldn’t let the lava surge onto the fortress. Once the lava solidified, it would form solid rocks. If it surged onto Black Soil Fortress, the Tribal Army might escape down the opposite stone slope at most, with minimal casualties.

If the lava solidified above Black Soil Fortress, not only would it damage the fortress’s structural integrity, but the cleanup would also be a colossal task, rendering Black Soil Fortress ineffective over a kilometer, making a future attack point for the Tribal Army.

As Minotaur Amst imagined, when the lava reached level with the fortress, Deputy Rona of the Imperial Army in the rear shattered the slate in his hand.

With a crash, the slate shattered, and the gushing lava beneath the fortress instantly stopped.

Carlos had reasons for not allowing the lava onto the fortress; one was the difficulty in removing cooled lava, and the other was that there was no need to let the lava surge up to eliminate the Tribal Army on the fortress; it would only alarm them.

When the lava stilled parallel to the fortress, Minotaur Amst breathed a sigh of relief, aligning with his expectations.

”Run!”

A relatively thin shout came from the side as the Goblin inventor dashed to the opposite side of the fortress, jumping over the stone slope constructed by the Tribal side to continue fleeing.

Initially, the Goblin inventor thought the alchemy array inside the lava was a ’Hot and cold replacement alchemy array’, but it wasn’t.

Seeing this reaction from the Goblin inventor, Minotaur Amst’s hair stood on end.

”Retreat from the fortress.”

While Minotaur Amst roared, he also ran towards the stone slope on the other side of the fortress, but unfortunately, he was a bit slow.

The lava, which had stopped gushing, began to change color from fiery red to blue-black, with a layer of ice crystal rapidly climbing on the lava’s surface.

With such a significant hot-cold transition, the semi-solidified lava slope quickly cracked.

Sizzle!

With hot and cold contact, a large amount of steam rose, not ordinary water vapor, but superheated steam exceeding critical points.

Amidst the steam, and given the westerly winds tonight, the vast steam quickly engulfed Black Soil Fortress, the very weather Carlos desired for tonight.

”Ah!!”

Heart-wrenching screams echoed from the fortress, as four ’dishes’ appeared: Steamed Beastman, Steamed Goblin, Steamed Dwarf, Steamed Giant Troll.

The thirty thousand Tribal Army stationed on the fortress howled in pain amidst the steam, the terrifying temperature corroding their skin, and upon inhalation, corroding their organs.

Within just a few seconds, the fortress fell into deathly silence, only a vast expanse of white steam remaining, as the stationed Tribal Army perished.

A scent of cooked meat wafted out, causing some newly recruited Imperial Army rookies to retch.

Silent, cruel, terrifying, this was the current state of Black Soil Fortress.

”Blood for blood, the fortress my ancestors built, the Tribal scum shall never take it.”

Carlos uttered these words word by word, this was Carlos, valiant and iron-blooded, more ruthless than anyone at critical moments. Only such a person could hold the frontier; those so-called heroes could not keep the tribe outside the fortress. There is no such word as despicable in war; as long as the enemy can be killed, who cares about being despicable? The dead can’t call the enemy despicable because they are dead, unable to speak.

The steam persisted for over four hours before it began to thin, with dawn breaking.

On the battlefield, Carlos spoke again to the invisible woman.

Meanwhile, at the back of the Imperial Army, Deputy Rona ordered the regrouping of the troops, and the command was quickly relayed throughout the army.

In just a few minutes, over two hundred thousand Imperial troops had reformed their ranks, the confusion in their eyes vanished, replaced by a determined gaze, making one wonder if these were the same nearly routed grunts who were desperately trying to retreat a few hours ago.

Several thousand soldiers carrying large water buckets lined up neatly and quickly ran toward Black Soil Fortress. As they reached the solidified lava slope, they detached the large buckets on their backs, pouring water from the height of half a person onto the slope base.

Sizzle~

Steam rose, and the temperature of the watered slope began to decrease, its surface turning a gray-black honeycomb pattern.

Bucket after bucket of water was poured, rapidly cooling the lava slope, with thousands of people gradually pushing upwards to continue pouring water.

After the thousands of buckets had been used, the lava slope was still somewhat hot to the touch, but just barely bearable.

Thud, thud, thud...

War drums sounded from the opposite side of the fortress, signaling the Tribal Army gathering, with both sides divided by the fortress, each side having a slope, one formed by cooling lava, the other prepared in advance by the Tribal Army, reducing the difficulty for the Tribal Army to storm the fortress.

Even if the Imperial Army hadn’t retaken the fortress, they had created a slope leading directly to the fortress’s top.

In this way, Black Soil Fortress became like a mountain, with both sides easily charging up the fortress. Now, it was a matter of seeing who could repel the other.
