Apocalyptic Reincarnation: Start with a 30-million Bonus

Chapter 622: Chapter 528: Researcher Ma Di’s Joining!

”Ma Di?” Li Yu remembered, it was the person they found at the chemical plant a few days ago.

Li Yu immediately headed towards the Inner City within the base.

Inside the Inner City.

Li Yu entered the small dark room and saw Ma Di.

Dragging a stool over, he sat in front of Ma Di.

Ma Di looked up at Li Yu as he entered, his gaze unflinching.

”When the evacuation to the Western Alliance happened, who were the people involved?” Li Yu asked.

Hearing this question, Ma Di indifferently said, ”Didn’t I tell you last time? They were people from pharmaceutical companies and some military personnel.”

”Who is the leader of the Western Alliance?” Li Yu pursued, his eyes intently fixed on Ma Di.

After thinking for a moment, Ma Di said, ”The Western Alliance doesn’t have an absolute leader; it’s essentially a loose organization. As far as I know, there are factions in Gui Province, Xiang Province, and Sichuan Province, but they all operate independently.”

A contemplative look flashed in Li Yu’s eyes before he continued, ”Let’s change the question. Who is the founder of the Western Alliance?”

Ma Di thought briefly before replying, ”The founder? Those were the executives from pharmaceutical companies. After the virus outbreak, they left M City. Later, they promised the military that they could develop a way to combat the Zombie Virus, and the military sent a team to protect them.”

”Did they really have the capability to develop a solution for the Zombie Virus?” Li Yu inquired.

Mockingly, Ma Di said, ”Heh, I was one of the principal individuals responsible for that research project. It’s not that simple. Plus, the Meteorite that fell back then is gone; we couldn’t even find the origin of the virus.

Without the origin, we can’t possibly identify the key to its mutation.

Moreover, when we moved to the Western Alliance, most of the team responsible for this project died in that Zombie Tide.

If it were that easy, I would have created it by now.

The virus is very complex, highly infectious; blind testing would only produce results like those green Zombies at the chemical plant.”

Upon hearing this, Li Yu said, ”Are you implying that the so-called ’Antidote’ that was developed could lead to further infection and mutation of Zombies?”

Pained, Ma Di lamented, ”Yes, without understanding the composition of the virus’s origin, baselessly tinkering would only yield adverse outcomes. We have no hope.

This virus is not native to this planet; without the Meteorite, without the viral origin, any experiment would be futile.”

Li Yu, digesting this information, asked, ”Does that mean they deceived the military?”

Ma Di nodded and said, ”You could say that. They didn’t have the capability to develop an ’Antidote.’ But at the outbreak, they told the military they could, hence the military dispatched a team to protect them.”

Li Yu thought for a moment then asked, ”Of those who were responsible for this project, how many are still alive?”

Ma Di pondered, mumbled for a while, and finally said, ”The main people in charge, Yong Xing, Dong Yi, Liu Dong, Chen Chen, Ji Yuning, they’re all dead. I remember only one, Gan Gaojie, is still alive.

Heh, the army was initially sent to protect us scientists, but in the end, they were all taken to protect the pharmaceutical executives and their families.

Our project, apart from me, the only other survivor, Gan Gaojie, was the son of a pharmaceutical company CEO.

Right after we successfully treated those cancer patients, the CEO saw that our team would create a new myth and stuffed his son into the project.

Useless. Who would’ve known the Zombie outbreak would occur...”

Li Yu listened quietly, thoughtfully processing before he looked up and said, ”So what you’re saying is that, as of now, from those responsible for the project, you’re the only one who truly understands it?”

”That’s right. But what does it matter? I can’t possibly develop an ’Antidote.’ Without the viral origin, it’s impossible. Even if we had the origin, given the nature of this virus, the likelihood of successfully developing an antidote is less than one percent,” Ma Di said, slumping despairingly into his chair.

Li Yu had no intention of comforting him, his mind racing.

If what Ma Di said was true,

then the military-uniformed individuals that He Chao and the others saw should be as Ma Di described, those assigned to protect the pharmaceutical people.

Instead of protecting those they should have, they had been used by the pharmaceutical executives to protect their own families.

These capitalists!

Li Yu gritted his teeth; these pharmaceutical people had merely used this team for their selfish gain.

What to do?

Li Yu’s brain spun frantically; according to Ma Di, those team members were probably still in the dark, used by the pharmaceutical executives without protecting the proper individuals.

Just how did Ma Di view the pharmaceutical company?

Thus he asked, ”You’ve returned and seen that your family is gone. If possible, would you go back to that pharmaceutical company?”

When Ma Di heard this question, an angry expression appeared on his face: ”Go back? What’s the point in returning? They’re all selfish, flesh-eating capitalists. At the beginning, when things went south, they threw us to the front to take the blame.
