System Came When the Doctor was Thirty

On September 10th, autumn finally embraced Long County, the weather cooled, and the sunlight was gentle, making the perceived temperature of around 22 or 23 degrees quite comfortable.

At half-past eight in the morning, Lu Cheng followed the rounds team led by Lin Qianlong and completed the rounds, then left the doctor’s lounge with his backpack.

Just as he reached the door, Lin Qianlong brushed past, stroking his chin. Lu Cheng called out, ”Director Lin,” and Lin Qianlong turned his head, saying, ”Xiao Lu, did you have another night shift yesterday?”

Lu Cheng smiled and said, ”Yes, Director Lin, I planned to get off at midnight, but then a case of multiple tendon ruptures came in, so I stayed.”

Lin Qianlong gestured for Lu Cheng to follow him into the director’s office, and after opening the door, took a deep breath and said, ”Xiao Lu, yesterday, Director Peng Haibo from Orthopedics and Director Xiang Kuihua came to me for a drink.”

”Last week, the number of fracture surgeries in the first ward of Orthopedics was only five, usually it’s about seven or eight.”

The weekly surgery volume Peng Haibo mentioned was the total for the department, not just Xiang Kuihua’s individual volume. Peng Haibo certainly took half of it.

”Yes, Director Lin, previously the fracture surgery volume in Orthopedics was about seven or eight a week, around thirty a month.”

Lu Cheng had transferred from Orthopedics to the Emergency Department, and in Long County, there were definitely cases of bone fractures every day, but not every patient would choose to be hospitalized at Renmin Hospital.

Lin Qianlong chuckled lightly and said, ”Xiao Lu, it seems you’ve had quite an impact on Orthopedics? Almost leaving others without a meal...”

Lu Cheng casually replied, ”Director Lin, Orthopedics also has spine, sports medicine, emergency, and tendon rupture surgeries, and their average performance is surely more than ours in the Emergency Department.”

”To say they can’t make a living is an exaggeration.”

Lin Qianlong gestured for Lu Cheng to sit down, then lit a cigarette, taking a puff as the smoke gradually enveloped his pockmarked face, making his expression faintly visible:

”But for a deputy chief physician, not getting enough surgery performance is somehow demeaning!!” Lin Qianlong subtly hinted.

Lu Cheng squinted his eyes: ”So Director Lin, what’s your suggestion?”

In the county, it’s ultimately about skills for making a living. If you can perform surgeries, you earn a higher salary; otherwise, you share the pot, and the capable ones take the largest portion.

”I’d like to hear what you think, Xiao Lu.” Lin Qianlong did not express an opinion.

Lu Cheng expanded the Emergency Department for the sake of patients, and Lin Qianlong also knew that Xiang Kuihua had privately conducted very thorough ’research’ on the post-manipulation reduction X-rays that Lu Cheng performed!

Although no conclusions had been drawn yet, Lu Cheng was essentially ’working on the edge.’ Making an effort shouldn’t be ignored by Lin Qianlong!

Lu Cheng certainly had talent, but his learning attitude was unmatched in the department.

Bold, meticulous, and competent, someone like him could either make a name at the Long County People’s Hospital or thrive in a private hospital.

”Orthopedics isn’t limited to fractures; rather, fractures are just the most basic and classic category in Orthopedics.”

”Because it’s classic, the treatment methods have become diverse. Manipulative reduction is indeed the most ancient treatment, but as long as the indications are well-controlled, it’s an inexpensive and effective treatment...”

Lu Cheng pursed his lips and said, ”Director Lin, to be honest, if patients undergo manipulative reduction, it can save a lot on medical expenses, and the results can be equally anticipated.”

”If I didn’t know how, I wouldn’t deliberately be compassionate. But now that I have this skill, not utilizing it when the opportunity arises goes against my principles!”

”Actually, it can be easily resolved. Orthopedics could open a trauma emergency outpatient in the Emergency Department, or expand their business in the outpatient department.”

”There are many conditions Orthopedics could expand into. Many patients seek treatment elsewhere anyway!~”

Lin Qianlong took another puff, carefully observing Lu Cheng’s expression.

Lu Cheng’s demeanor was natural, without arrogance, and his tone was calm, without the intent to boast or mock.

Summarizing, ”You mean, let Xiang Kuihua learn new techniques, establish his own ground again, and you’ve decided to secure the manipulative reduction area?”

Lu Cheng responded, ”Director Lin, no one’s skills are obtained from lying in bed. With just a few casual words from Director Xiang, should the time and effort I’ve invested go to waste, for what reason?”

”Director Lin, privately speaking, it’s not pleasant to hear, but they can’t even claim the moral high ground.”

I’ve invested my Skill Points; are you asking me to stop?

Lu Cheng doesn’t accept this reasoning.

Neither Chen Song nor Tong Yuan’an are adept at manipulative reductions, and nobody provided backing for Lu Cheng; he had to ’feel his way across the river’ all by himself!

Not only did he have to guard against patient complaints about ’incorrect treatment,’ but also worry about colleagues’ backstabbing. Lu Cheng overcame all these obstacles, so now when it’s said that it wasn’t easy, Lu Cheng doesn’t have to restrain himself!

If Lu Cheng were to go too far, he could just keep all fracture patients in the Emergency Department, and that would indeed be excessive.

No need to go too far when making a point; mercy can be shown when possible.

Lu Cheng continued, ”Director Lin, frankly speaking, every time I do a manipulative reduction, I constantly review the postoperative follow-up results of those patients.”

”At home, I go through various fracture classifications, indications, and contraindications for manipulative reduction. We’ve all spent time and energy…”

Lin Qianlong nodded, ”Right!~ The skills aren’t gained for free.”

”I mainly wanted to hear your stance; I haven’t given any agreement.” Lin Qianlong took another puff, then continued:

”Xiao Lu, you are now one of us in the Emergency Department, and I am surely unconditionally supporting you.”

Since the Emergency Surgery is part of the surgical structure, it must have its surgery volume, with the skills to effectively serve patients.

If Orthopedics can master manipulative reduction, intercepted by Lu Cheng, they’ll hesitate to argue, but for now, the manipulative reductions Lu Cheng knows are those Orthopedic doctors aren’t skilled in.

Then don’t bring it up!

”Today is Teachers’ Day. Professor Chen has given you the entire lunch period alone, so you must entertain him well, right?” Lin Qianlong hinted.

Lu Cheng quickly said, ”Director Lin, absolutely, after Teacher Chen wakes up later, I plan to invite him for a meal, then go for a foot massage to relax.”

”Don’t worry; it’s proper.”

Lin Qianlong extinguished the cigarette with a meaningful remark, ”I don’t care if it’s proper or not...”

Lu Cheng: ”...”

After chatting with Lin Qianlong for a while, Lu Cheng found that when he stepped out, the head nurse Peng Ping was leading a patient and family, along with the on-duty nurse Tian Duoduo, carrying a banner approaching.

Inscribed were the words: ”Skillful medical expertise, miraculous hand brings spring.”

Presented to Doctor Lu Cheng, Director Lin Qianlong, and all members of the Emergency Surgery Department.

Lu Cheng immediately turned to say, ”Director Lin, Bed 3 has sent a banner, the head nurse is also here…”

Lin Qianlong quickly emptied the ashtray, took a couple of quick breaths to stand up, and put on a mask...
