Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The far end.

The dark had a heartbeat.

It was his.

The lines cut into the wall lit with every beat, dimming in the space between, and the light ran out along the roots — roots thicker than the towers of the cities he used to know — down and down, past the last place his eyes had ever followed. Where the light ended, the holding began. Aldric Valis had been the lock on this door for so long that counting wasn’t work anymore; his heart counted, the wall listened. That was the whole arrangement, and it had outlasted everyone who had known him before it.

He still had habits. That surprised him sometimes — that after everything, he was still a man with habits. He rolled his right shoulder when it locked, which it always did, always the right one. He ran his thumb over the old scars on his knuckles, one at a time, in order, like a man checking the buttons of a coat. Small things. Human things. He kept them on purpose, because the door didn’t need a man — but he’d decided, a long time ago, that a man was what it would get.

The thing on the other side pushed while he worked.

It was always pushing somewhere. For as long as he had held it, it had kept a rhythm of its own — push, and rest, push, and rest, patient as weather — and by now he knew that rhythm better than he knew his own voice. Which was how he knew it had changed.

The rests were getting shorter.

The pushes came longer now, and in more places at once, like a thing searching after it had stopped being sure it had forever. Something had stirred it. He didn’t know what, and he didn’t spend strength wondering. Knowing wasn’t his job. Holding was.

And then there was the new weight. The good one.

It had arrived quietly: a weight on the line that had never been there before.

Someone was reading him.

He could feel it like a sleeping man feels morning through his eyelids. Young. Blood of his blood. Awake. Going through what the blood had kept, one memory at a time, slow and careful, like someone turning the pages of a book they’d decided to believe.

That was everything he knew, and it was more than he’d had in centuries.

Every part of him that was still a man wanted to answer.

It wouldn’t even take much. That was the cruel part, and he had measured it exactly, long ago. A fraction of himself, turned from the door and pointed down the line. A touch. A word. The smallest yes.

And a fraction was exactly what the door needed. The thing behind it had been waiting a very long time for him to spend one somewhere else.

So he didn’t answer. He took the breath a man takes before speaking — and held it, and let it go where it was, and kept his whole weight on the door. All of him. Nothing spent. The same as every hour since he had shut it.

But holding a door wasn’t the same as feeling nothing. Nobody had ever managed to seal that part of him. He’d tried.

Someone had come.

After everything — the room with the seam, the choice, the vanishing, the slow going-quiet of his own name in the world — the line had gone on without him. It had grown something new. And the something new had woken, and it was strong enough to read the blood, and it had come all the way out to the far end of everything to sit with him, night after night, whether it knew what it was doing or not.

His face did something it hadn’t done in a long time. It wasn’t a smile. It was close.

’Good.’

The thing on the other side pushed then, long and slow, in three places at once. Aldric Valis leaned back into his work.

Beat, and light. Beat, and light.

Beat, and light.

Sovereign Dawn — the same night.

At the top of Terrace hill, dinner was loud on purpose.

Yuelan was telling a story with both hands, standing up for the important parts. Cassian’s voice made everything worse from the slate propped against the water jug, and Vesper was drawing something she refused to show anyone until it was finished. The table was full of food and noise and elbows.

Two chairs stood empty.

One was Kaelen’s, kept exactly where he’d left it — nobody used it, nobody moved it, and the whole table had agreed, without one word ever being said, that it was his.

The other was Ren’s. He spent most evenings somewhere quiet now. Nobody made anything of it. Yuelan just talked a little louder, enough for the missing, and dinner went on warm.

Down the hill, on a bench with a good view of the Terrace lights, a man in grey sat with a cup of tea he had let go cold.

He looked like a man with nowhere in particular to be. He had looked that way every night this week, if anyone had been checking. Nobody ever checked. That was the point.

When the last lights in the big house went out, one window at a time, he tipped the cold tea into the grass, nodded to the hill — to nobody — and stayed right where he was.

Across campus, in a corridor with nothing else in it, Riven Kest stood in front of a plain door.

The student Time chamber. The clerk’s sign still hung on it — the one that said, in tidy letters, that the room was mostly used to store chairs.

Kest read it twice. He stood there a while, longer than he would have admitted to anyone, hands at his sides, the corridor empty around him. Then he left, as quietly as he had come, and nobody saw him do either.

The door he didn’t open stayed shut behind him. It was used to that.

And at the seclusion hall, at the end of the corridor everyone had learned to walk past softly, Instructor Hart’s door stood the same as it had stood since she went in. Shut. Silent. Patient.

Except that under the bottom edge of it, tonight, there was light.

A lamp was lit inside.

It had never been lit before.
