Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Ridgeline Training Realm — contract day.

The listing had said HIGH, and for the first twenty minutes the contract had politely pretended otherwise.

Team One — Kaelen, Yuelan, and Yueying, front line, front line, and the count — had come for another ridgeclaw nest, the horn-backed pack species they’d been clearing for weeks. The Guild wanted this one gone before molt season; simple enough, just one grade meaner than usual.

Nobody had mentioned the alpha.

It came out of the rocks when half the nest was already down, twice the size of the others, its horns worn down to scarred stumps, and went straight for Yuelan while she was halfway through a swing — the one moment her guard was on the wrong side.

Yueying shouted; Yuelan turned into the hit instead of away, and everything got very fast.

The alpha never reached her.

Kaelen did.

Afterward, none of them described those few seconds quite the same way. Yuelan said he’d hit it like a falling building; Yueying, who kept the count and rarely exaggerated, wrote one line in the report:

For three exchanges, his output exceeded every measurement I have of him.

For three exchanges, Kaelen’s strikes sounded different — heavier, cleaner, each one landing hard enough that the air seemed to pick his side — and the alpha went from hunting, to surviving, to neither.

Then it was over, and Kaelen was just Kaelen again, breathing hard as he offered Yuelan a hand.

She took it.

Neither mentioned Kest.

Across campus, Team Two had a quieter contract, which was exactly how they preferred it.

Mistwhisker found the burrow field nearly an hour before anything inside found them; Vesper followed the map through the cat’s senses, Iris laid root-lines through the grass, and when the first burrow opened, Lyra was already moving.

Eira’s kit stayed closed from start to finish.

That was how Team Two measured a good mission: Eira bored, everyone walking.

Yueying filed both reports that evening, then went back to the history tower, where the records she kept requesting were getting older every week.

Alliance medical district.

Cassian ran the war from his cot, which by now had developed a reputation.

Three slates floated around the treatment cradle — rosters, maps, supplies — while the array behind him continued growing his channels back a hair’s width at a time. The healers had stopped asking him to rest during treatment; they’d lost that argument often enough.

Team Two’s report came first.

Cassian skimmed it and sent back:

”Burrow fields again. Vesper, the cat gets a bonus. Iris, your lattice spacing was showing off. Keep showing off.”

Then Team One’s report arrived, and he went quiet halfway through another joke.

His eyes stopped on Yueying’s line.

His output exceeded every measurement I have of him.

Cassian read it twice.

He opened the reply.

”Nice swing.”

Deleted it.

Then typed:

”Adequate.”

And sent that instead.

Kaelen would understand.

Arena district — Tower Nine, late.

The tower lights were supposed to go out at midnight.

One room on the fourth floor stayed lit.

Inside, Kaelen ran the same sequence he’d been drilling for three hours.

Step, cut, recover.

Step, cut, recover.

His hands had started shaking sometime during the second hour; he watched the tremor settle, reset his grip, and kept going.

Down on the concourse, Yuelan and Yueying passed on their way home and noticed the light.

They exchanged one look.

Neither went upstairs.

Inside, Kaelen eventually stopped and looked at his reflection in the dark window.

Stage Four.

Strong.

Getting stronger.

Still nowhere close.

The luggage can throw a punch.

He picked up his slate.

The listing wasn’t on the normal mission boards. It sat three menus deep in the Guild’s restricted section, and he’d opened it enough times this week that he knew every line.

THE FURNACE ROAD

A gauntlet realm. You entered at one end and came out the other — or you didn’t.

No contracts. No normal extraction.

The Guild called its advancement rate unmatched among Tier One training grounds.

Its gate opened once every few years.

It was open now.

Then came the line nobody could pretend not to see:

Applicants are advised: the historical casualty rate of the Furnace Road stands near eighty-five percent.

Kaelen read it again.

Eighty-five.

Still eighty-five.

He thought about the classroom a year ago, when Ren had still been someone he could reasonably call a rival; then the Cup, the broadcast, Stage Five, and the promise he’d made once aloud and a thousand times since to nobody.

’I said I’d catch up.’

Kaelen opened the application.

And started filling it in.

The high terraces — dawn.

Lyra’s lookout sat at the end of a road almost nobody used, a shelf of pale stone overlooking Sovereign Dawn’s permanent sunrise.

She’d found it during her first week.

She’d never brought anyone there.

Until Iris.

Iris stood at the rail for a while, taking in the view, then glanced sideways.

”You’ve never shown anyone this place.”

”No.”

”And you’re showing me.”

”Yes.”

Iris considered that, and Lyra let her.

Neither of them was uncomfortable with silence.

Eventually Iris said, ”He comes back soon.”

Still no name. There had never been one in these conversations, and by now both of them knew pretending otherwise was pointless.

”He does,” Lyra said.

The quiet settled again.

Then Lyra spoke.

”When he’s back.”

Iris looked at her.

”Together.”

That was the whole negotiation.

No argument, no speeches — just an understanding between them while the gold line of dawn stayed exactly where it always did.

— • —

The seclusion halls.

They passed Selene’s door on the way home because, sometime over the last few weeks, the route had stopped being a decision.

Closed.

Same as last week.

No lamp. No sound. No news.

Eira slowed and touched two fingers to her chest.

Usually, that was all.

This time Yuelan stopped too.

She stared at the door for a moment, frowning at it like it had personally annoyed her, then reached into her jacket and pulled out her arena badge.

Tower Nine. Seventh tier.

She placed it on the threshold, adjusted it twice until it sat straight, and stood.

”Hold my place,” she told the door. ”I’m busy till you’re out.”

Then she walked away fast enough that nobody mistook it for an invitation to comment.

Nobody did.

The Fifth Terrace — night.

The group chat looked like they’d had a good day.

Team One’s HIGH clear came first, accompanied by Yuelan’s usual amount of capital letters. Team Two posted their clean burrow-field clear. Cassian had replied to Kaelen’s moment with:

Adequate.

Forty minutes later, Kaelen answered:

.

From Kaelen, that was practically a hug.

Eira sent a photo of the greenhouse cuttings. Someone started planning dinner.

Normal things.

Things Ren could read without worrying.

Yuelan stared at the chat, then typed one word.

Kest.

She looked at it.

Deleted the last letter.

Then another.

Until the box was empty again.

’He handles it when he’s back. That was the deal.’

Across campus, Tower Nine had finally gone dark.

Kaelen’s slate lay beside his training weapon, the report he’d sent the others still open at the top — clean, ordinary, nothing worth worrying about.

Beneath it, in a folder the chat would never see, sat another document.

APPLICATION STATUS: SUBMITTED.

FURNACE ROAD.

HISTORICAL CASUALTY RATE: 85%.

The chat stayed clean.

It was getting very good at that.
