Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The party ended late — at least by the clock, since the sky couldn’t be bothered to turn dark. Everyone was gathering at the Terrace gate for the walk down, but then a familiar hum came up the path instead. Bram’s platform stopped right in the gold light, the man leaning against the rail like he had all the time in the world. ”Figured nobody wanted to hike after a day like this,” he said. ”Climb on. I’ll run you home.”

He dropped them off at their doors, one by one, handing out instructions like he was reading a delivery manifest. ”Your supplies arrive in the morning. Student ID, uniform, instruction slate, the lot. And a vehicle for each of you — don’t bother asking. You aren’t getting anywhere on this campus without your own ride. Your legs don’t count. Nobody’s legs count.”

”Do ours go as fast as yours?” Yuelan asked.

”Not even close.” Bram smiled at her look of disappointment. ”Sleep well.”

Up the hill, Ren listened to the group channel blow up over Yuelan’s future speed limits, and went inside with a smile.

Morning didn’t change the light. The dawn was still the same gold it had been at midnight, stuck across the lake in that same unbroken bar; only the clocks claimed the day was new. What morning did bring was crates.

They were stacked on every doorstep, pale academy grey with the rising-sun crest stamped into the lids — one set even sitting up the hill inside the Fifth Terrace gates. A vehicle stood in front of every manor. The group channel went from dead silent to a riot in under a minute.

First came the uniforms. First-year cut, clean and simple — white and deep grey, dawn-gold at the collar and cuffs, the crest over the heart. The fabric adjusted itself the second you put it on, like it was sizing you up and deciding you were worth the effort. Yueying actually called the tailoring ”acceptable for a formal court,” which from her was basically a standing ovation.

The IDs were just slim slips of pale jade with a tiny light pulsing inside — name, year, and that was it. But the slate explained the slip was everything: doors, libraries, halls, markets, vehicles. Lose it, the manual warned, and the campus would just stop acting like you existed.

The slates carried the rules, the upcoming schedules, and a map of the place. Cassian zoomed in on the map at breakfast, kept zooming, and then set the slate down very gently. ”It’s still zooming,” he told the channel. ”I need everyone to know the map is still zooming.”

Each slate also had a merit number — a starter allowance for every first-year, the currency for anything worth fighting for. Hall bookings, arena time, the deeper archives — the allowance looked huge until you saw the price tags.

Then there were the vehicles. Open two-seat skimmers, smaller versions of Bram’s monster — same build, wind-eaten, motion-smoothed, speed-capped for the newbies. Yuelan found the limiter section of her manual minutes after touching hers. It was three pages long, and every page was basically a fancy way of saying no. Mistwhisker took the passenger seat of Vesper’s on sight, curled up, and made it pretty clear the seat was her territory now.

Mid-morning, a staff message hit nine slates at once. ”If any of you crashes into a lecture hall during my first week of employment, I will assign essays. — Instructor Hart.”

”She signed it,” Yuelan said. ”Like we might not know her.”

With a country to themselves and a ride each, they scattered.

Cassian aimed his skimmer at the archive district and vanished for the rest of the day. Yuelan hung out in the combat district, climbing an arena tower level by level, watching matches and adding names to a secret list. Kaelen found the training fields at the base of the towers and ran himself into the dirt with the focus of a guy building a mountain by hand.

Eira returned from the greenhouse terraces with a bag of cuttings and a look like she’d found heaven. Vesper and Mistwhisker ate their way down one food street and back up the other, Vesper logging stalls in her notebook while the cat acted as judge. Yueying disappeared into the oldest history tower and came out glowing, carrying centuries of knowledge the Azure court had never seen. Iris rode the district lines all day to build her own map — routes, exits, sightlines — because the academy’s map was fine, but she liked having her own. Lyra hit the high terrace roads with nowhere to go, just learning the place, until she found a lookout where the dawn hit the horizon like a line of struck gold.

Ren went looking for the law halls.

— • —

The cultivation districts were quieter than the rest of the campus, and the law-comprehension halls were the quietest part. They sat at the end of an avenue of old trees — long, low stone pavilions with no signs or announcements. It felt like a library, only you read it with your skin.

The attendant at the desk didn’t even look up while checking his jade slip. ”First-year allocation covers the basic rooms. Refined single-aspect, low grade. The graded pavilions run on merit, and those queues are months long. Take what’s open or earn your merit.”

He took what was open: a basic Earth room, third door on the left.

It was just bare stone, a mat, and a single lamp, but the air changed the moment the door sealed. It was dense — not heavy like water, but thick with a single idea. The refined aspect of Earth hung in the room like the smell of rain in a field, and every breath tasted like stone, dirt, and patience.

His world’s air was better than anything here — richer, alive, always feeding his foundation. This room did nothing for his foundation, but that wasn’t the point. Foundation was food for what he was. This was food for what he understood. A different kind of meal.

He sat on the mat, closed his eyes, and listened to the idea of stone.

His Earth was small — a ledger line grown from grafted metal and dust — but it gave him a place to stand. He held what he had up against what filled the room, matching them up the way he’d once compared soil between his fingers on the farm. Where they fit, he pressed. Where they didn’t, he watched. Hours went by like weather.

[ENVIRONMENTAL LAW EXPOSURE: EARTH — REFINED, LOW GRADE.]

[EARTH LAW: 1.21% → 1.23%.]

Two hundredths of a point for an afternoon. Ren opened his eyes and did farmer’s math. It was a drip — but a drip that never stopped, and this was the worst room on the street. Better rooms meant faster gains. Merit meant better rooms. Classes, rankings, and work meant merit. The halls weren’t a meal you gulped down. They were a field you farmed.

The manual hadn’t lied about the fine print, either. Comprehension was a personal thing — two students could sit in the same room for the same hours and walk out with totally different results, and no test could predict which kind you were. Every law also got tougher the further you went; each point cost more than the last. His Earth was still cheap, near the bottom of the ledger. Life and Death, both past ten percent, would be a crawl. That was fine. He’d never seen a field that got easier the longer you worked it.

The Endless Graft was still his engine — it paid whole shares at once, and nothing here would beat that. But grafts needed materials, and those ran out. This just needed him to keep showing up, and showing up was the one thing he was good at.

’Fine,’ he thought, standing up and working the stiffness out of his shoulders. ’Then I want every room on this street.’

The attendant glanced up as he walked out. ”Basic room bookings usually run an hour. You sat for six.”

”The air’s good,” Ren said, and left her with that.

He sent one message on the ride home — dinner at mine — and the Fifth Terrace filled up on schedule.

The stories collided over the table. Yuelan wanted to know why Cassian smelled like dust, and Cassian, who’d been kicked out of the archives at closing, defended himself with a list of everything he’d found like it was a holy relic. Vesper handed out food-street rankings with Mistwhisker giving rulings from her lap. Eira passed out cuttings like candy. Yueying corrected one historical claim and actually apologized for enjoying it. Iris and Lyra compared maps — the official one versus the real one. Kaelen barely said a word and stayed anyway, which from him was basically a speech.

Ren sat in the middle of the noise, in his ridiculous house, and felt how right this all was. Then Cassian’s complaining about merit prices slowed down, tipped sideways, and stopped; the archives had finally sent him the bill. Ren carried him to the guest room — first occupant, one day in — and came back to find nobody surprised at all.

Much later, when the manors down the hill were quiet and the dawn still refused to turn to night, Ren slept — and opened his eyes under the glowing mountains.

The shift was routine now, the way war just becomes a habit. He crossed his old line and kept going, pushing deeper into the crown’s ground than ever before, moving low and quiet through valleys where the glow bled between the rocks like slow, light-filled rivers.

He knew he’d found its territory because the mountains themselves told him. Claw-marks cut into the cliff faces in trenches longer than streets — some smooth from time, some fresh enough that raw light still bled from the cuts. The warring land usually fought everywhere, every hour of every day. Here, nothing fought at all.

Then he found the kill. A full-grown cinderwheel lay in a scree field, shell and all, opened by a single cut from crest to belly. Nothing had touched it. The swarms had ignored it, and the scavengers had given it a wide berth. Whatever ruled these mountains hadn’t killed for hunger. It had left a message, written in the only language the warring land understood.

Ren crouched by the carcass for a long time, reading the edges of the wound the way Iris read a bracket. One cut, clean through a shell that would’ve taken his best work to break. No struggle marks. No second strike, because none was needed. In the back of his mind, Kaia had gone dead silent, the way she only did when something out-massed him.

He didn’t push any further. He just marked the approach — the ridgelines, the wind, the one slope with cover — and pulled back the way he came, unhurried and very, very quiet.

The panel appeared as the glow faded behind him.

[FRAGMENT DISSOLUTION: 3 DAYS REMAINING.]

’Three days.’ Ren looked back at the mountains burning gold against the dark. ’I know where you live now. Rest up, Your Majesty. I’m coming for the crown.’
