Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Eight days in, deep in a patch of silver reeds between two seams, Ren was losing a sword fight.

His opponent was a head shorter, built like a folded razor — lean, plated, and walking on back-bent legs. It had arms that ended in blades instead of claws, twin edges of bone-metal worn sharp and bright. It rose out of the reeds as he crossed the patch, scanned him like Harrun used to scan a piece of steel in the forge-hall, and settled into a stance. Guard high, weight back, edges in line. A real stance — the kind the academy hammered into students, the kind he’d watched on the Cup stage under big stadium lights.

He read the panel twice between parries because monsters just didn’t fence. Monsters lunged, swarmed, or tried to trick him by looking like houses or rocks — he had a whole year of that now — but they didn’t measure distance, and they certainly didn’t feint. This one feinted. It took small, patient steps, keeping its edges perfectly in line, and every time he swung too wide, it was already inside his arc. Only the black petals of Gravebloom kept it from digging into his ribs.

He gave ground, reset, and circled. As the two of them turned through the whispering reeds, the last eight days ran through his head like a ledger being checked for mistakes.

The routine had settled in fast. Meridian by day: walk the seams, log the species, kill whatever jumped him, feed it all to the Graft. The sunken world by night: step into his own world, head out through the arch, and farm the covered district until the sea showed him something new. He camped wherever dusk found him, in whichever climate was politest about it. It was the best farming schedule of his life, and by day three, he’d noticed a pattern.

The monsters were changing — and both worlds were changing the same way.

In the warring land, nothing had really wielded anything; it was just a month of teeth, mass, and raw numbers. The sunken world’s shallows had been the same. But the covered district’s fish had artillery, and the deeper he pushed into the Meridian, the more the realm started looking like that deep city. Element users had gone from rare, to common, to — this past week — the vast majority of anything worth scanning.

A ram in the fire patch had trotted up a slope of black glass, shook itself like a wet dog, and pelted him with burning wool.

A grey bird had circled the storm seam above him for an hour, patient as a tax collector, and every time he crossed open ground, the sky took a stab at him.

On the fourth night, in a dark street past the edge of the covered district, a warm golden lantern-glow drifted out of a doorway, homey as a kitchen window — attached to an anglerfish the size of a cart.

He’d fed them all to the Graft and updated his theory: the deeper any world let him in, the more its monsters stopped being animals and started being cultivators with bad manners.

He’d kept his promise to the armor, too. Every camp, every dusk, he drilled Gravebloom’s own weapons — the law-attacks he’d been too busy to touch since the forge. The lattice did more than just eat hits and grow footing. Fed with Death, it made petals that withered whatever they brushed; fed with Life, it made snare-blooms that grabbed and swelled. By the fifth camp, he could seed a patch of ground and walk away, and the flowers would wait in the grass — dark, patient, exactly as advertised. The fine print hadn’t changed: light work ran on ambient energy, but the heavy stuff billed him. All week, the flowers fought too.

And then there was the sixth night, when the sunken world went quieter than usual.

He’d been storing kills along a covered arcade when he really looked at the band of stone above a doorway — a long flat strip, gouged with old, methodical scrape-marks. He’d seen bands like it everywhere and filed them as weathering. Up close, the marks looked like the place where words used to be.

He checked the next doorway. Scraped. The arch over the street — scraped. The plinth under a fallen statue, the wall of what might have been a shop, the stone crown of the grandest gate. He spent the rest of the night not hunting, just drifting from building to building with his fifty meters of awareness thrown wide, looking for one written word in an entire drowned city. A book, a plaque, a tablet, a name. Anything.

There was nothing. A whole civilization had built towers and bridges and streets, and not one word remained — and it wasn’t rot, and it wasn’t the sea. Ruins usually forgot things slowly and messily; he’d seen enough dead places to know what forgetting looked like. This was even. This was every word, everywhere, taken down to smooth stone by someone’s patient tool, the way you’d scrape a label off a jar.

Back in his own world at dawn, he’d taken the disc out of storage and turned it under the light for a long while — fine, deliberate lines the sea had never touched, engraved edge to edge, function unknown. A thought started somewhere at the bottom of his mind. He put the disc away before it could finish. Some ideas felt like the deep end, and the deep end wasn’t priced yet.

That was the week: two worlds, one pattern, one silence, and a farmer getting rich in the middle of it all. Nowhere in the ledger was the error he was looking for. Nothing in eight days explained where a monster in a border realm had learned to fence.

The reedfencer came in again, high line then low, and Gravebloom spent two flowers keeping his leg attached. The fight had run long — long enough that the lattice’s inscription-lines had stopped sipping ambient energy and started drinking him, a slow bill he could feel climbing behind his ribs. In all of it, he’d landed one clean hit, an Earth-hardened Death-edge across its shoulder plating, and learned that the bone-metal shrugged off even layered laws unless the angle was perfect. It had landed eleven. The armor had eaten all eleven, but the armor wasn’t free.

That was the problem, he realized, watching it reset its guard with that terrible patience. He was fighting its fight — measure, tempo, clean exchanges, a duel at its own range in the reeds it was probably born in. Every trade was a lesson, and it was the faster student.

’Okay,’ he thought, giving one more step of ground. ’New plan. We stop fencing—’

The stance dropped half an inch. The reeds bowed flat.

He never saw the draw. The sky turned sideways, and the last thing to go through his head — besides the ground rushing up to meet it — was that the strike had been faster than a blooming flower.

[CAUSE OF DEATH: SWORDSMANSHIP.]

[REVIVALS REMAINING THIS YEAR: SIX.]

— • —

He woke in his mother’s flowers with both hands at his throat.

It was there. It was always there; the revival rebuilt everything, that was the point. He lay in the field with his heart slamming, palms pressed to his neck for one long, careful minute, and this time there was no laughing. The thirteenth death had been shrimp, and he’d laughed until his ribs hurt. The fourteenth had watched him start to feel clever, waited politely, and taken his head between two words of his own plan.

Kaia was pressed against the inside of his chest hard enough to ache, all warmth and claws, the way she only got when something had truly frightened her. He kept a hand over his heart until she settled.

Then he sat up and did the math. Eight days in, one of seven year-lives spent. He hadn’t lost it to some king in the core, either — he’d lost it to an animal in the outer area, the mild ring, the one that surveyed clean, because the thing had a skill and he had stats. A year of getting heavier than every chart the academy owned, and none of that tonnage mattered for the tenth of a second the draw took. The viper had taught him that poison skipped the argument with mass. Apparently skill skipped it too.

He could route around the patch — mark it, avoid it, spend two months flinching at reeds. He stood up out of the flowers instead. Avoiding things had never once worked for him, and the outer area was supposed to be his for the season. He wasn’t going to rent it from a bug.

The plan built itself on the walk back, and all of it hung off one sentence: stop fencing the fencer. It wanted a duel — measure and tempo and honest exchanges. He was a farmer. Farmers didn’t duel their problems. They prepared the ground, then they harvested.

— • —

He came into the reed patch slow from the south, and seeded every step — Gravebloom’s dark seeds slipping from his fingers down among the roots, dozens of them, a garden planted in a killer’s front yard. The reedfencer rose out of the silver stalks at forty paces, blades already in guard. Its prey had come back. It took its stance like the morning had been a rehearsal.

Ren didn’t take one. He stood loose at the edge of his new garden, arms low, feet wrong, an insult in every line of him — and its patience did what patience does to bait. It came to him.

It crossed the first ten paces in small, perfect steps, and the ground woke up. Snare-blooms burst under it, Life-fat vines snapping around its back-bent legs; it sheared through them, of course — it was always going to shear through them — but shearing cost rhythm, and rhythm was the whole animal. Wither-petals drifted up grey-edged out of the breaking blooms, and wherever they brushed its plating, the bright bone-metal dulled like a season getting in. Somewhere between one step and the next, it stopped being a duelist crossing a floor and became a creature wading through a garden that hated it.

Its stance dropped half an inch.

He was watching for that, this time, from a body-width away from where he’d been standing — the heel-bloom had fired the instant the reeds began to bow. The draw came anyway, the full unreasonable speed of it, the cut that had killed him — through a snare it hadn’t finished shearing, at a man who was no longer where the stance had aimed. It took the head off a black flower.

Ren stepped inside the spent stroke with both hands on Heavenpiercer, Earth layered under Death layered under everything his arms owned, and brought the edge down on the shoulder seam he’d paid eleven exchanges and one life to find. No flourish, no answer to its style. Just a farmer splitting wood.

The edge went through. The reedfencer folded down into the reeds with its guard still half-raised, and the patch went back to whispering.

He stood over it until he was sure, then let the breath out and stored the body. The Guild’s first-log form hovered up, patient, asking for a species name and a note. He named it, and in the note field wrote the only data that mattered: skilled — do not duel it.

[FIRST LOG: REEDFENCER.]

He worked the seams until dusk, because the day was still a workday, but he walked them differently — awareness sweeping low for vipers and wide for stances, one new rule pinned above everything else the realm had taught him. That night, before the sea shift, he sat at the edge of his mother’s field with Kaia settled warm behind his ribs, and let the day file itself where it belonged. Fourteen deaths. Six realm-lives left in the year, most of the expedition still ahead, and the outer ring’s mild reputation lying dead in a reed patch.

The realm had won the morning. The farmer had won the day. He intended to keep that ratio.
