Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Breakfast at the Terrace had become a thing, just a regular part of the morning now, and Ren walked into his own dining room to see half the cohort helping themselves to his food. He told them his plans while he was eating, just kind of tossed it out there like he was talking about the weather: mission hall, first contract, a new secret realm.

”Which realm?” Cassian asked.

”The new one. The Meridian Realm. Exploration contract.”

Iris didn’t even look up from her slate. ”The Meridian Realm is Stage Five restricted.”

”I know,” Ren said, and finished his tea. Yuelan just pointed her spoon at him for a long, quiet second, then went back to her food like she was writing a very serious, very grumpy letter to the universe.

The mission hall was massive, like a stadium, and it moved with that quiet, quick energy of a place where people’s lives were just numbers on a board. Light boards hummed with contracts; students hovered at counters; clerks stamped slates with the kind of bored, fast rhythm you only get when you’ve seen every type of genius and weren’t impressed by a single one. Ren walked in and the room did that thing it always did now — conversations dipped, slates turned his way, some first-year whispered ”that’s him” loud enough for the whole room to hear — and Ren just kept walking, acting like he couldn’t hear a word. By tomorrow the rumor boards would be buzzing about the rule-breaker taking restricted contracts solo. Let them. The story could use another Chapter. He spotted what he needed on the restricted board, sitting under two crests — the academy’s rising sun, and the compass-and-lantern of the Explorer Guild.

A joint contract. The Meridian Realm was fresh, barely touched; the intel was four lines of text — unmapped, unstable borders between climate zones, a ton of unlogged species, entry restricted to Stage Five and above. The academy wanted survey data. The Guild wanted maps and first-logs. Both were paying: academy merit, Guild contribution, and Guild coin, plus a first-explorer bonus because nobody had actually stepped foot in there yet. Standing access, go whenever, report per trip.

Ren read it twice and felt that tree-shaped deadline in the back of his head give a little nod. His nights belonged to the sunken world until the clock hit zero; his days needed their own thing, and here was a spot with no crowds, no waiting, and three ways to make bank at once. He wasn’t thinking about quick day trips. Scout it today — then move in. Maybe a month, maybe two, just however the ground felt. Unlike the fragments, a realm let the Graft work, so every kill could pay twice: proofs for the Guild, bodies for the ledger. And his nights were safe because the sunken world’s arch traveled with him everywhere he walked.

The restriction didn’t care who you were — staff, Guild veteran, visiting expert, student — Stage Five was the line, and if you cleared it, the contract was yours. Usually, the people who cleared it were pros with real jobs and busy schedules, which was why the newest realm on the board sat there ignored: unmapped ground, easy bonuses, and zero competition. For once, his luck was actually working out.

’About time,’ Ren thought, and tapped his jade slip against the listing.

The clerk at the restricted counter was Guild, not academy — an older guy with a face like worn leather and a compass pin. He checked the registration, checked Ren’s stage, and actually looked up with a real expression on his face. ”Solo, Stage Five.” He stamped the slate, and he looked almost interested. ”Gate’s yours, kid. Try to come back; the paperwork’s worse when you don’t.”

The transfer platform lifted him up to where the realm-gates hung in orbit. Even after all the times he’d done this, the view never got old — Dawnspire dropping away below, that endless gold band of dawn on the horizon, and ahead, hung in the dark like a necklace for a planet, the sealed rings of the academy’s realms. Most were busy with traffic — seniors heading into tame, old grounds for mission season — but the Meridian Realm’s gate sat past the others, dark and new and empty, its seal still humming. It blinked open for his slip like an eye waking up.

He stepped through and hit two climates at once.

The seam was right there on the platform: red desert to his left, dry and hot, and pine forest to his right, breathing out cold resin. The border was just a line in the dirt he could stand over — one boot in sand, one in snow-dusted needles, two skies mashed together in different shades of blue. The horizon was like a quilt, patch after patch after patch: tundra white, swamp green, some weird violet shade he couldn’t name, every border wrong and every border acting like it was totally normal.

Ren stood on the seam, one boot in each world. ’Who sewed you together?’ he wondered — then he pushed the question aside, right next to the air pockets and the grey tree, and got to work. Wondering didn’t pay the rent.

He handled it like a farmer checking new fences. Route first: he stuck to the seams instead of the patches, since the borders were where the map mattered and where the weird stuff lived. His survey slate drank up the data as he went — seam lines, patch depths, weather, water. Species second: every unlogged critter meant a first-log fee, so the scan paid for itself all morning, catching grazers, burrowers, and a dozen ambush plants. Kills third, and only if they tried to jump him. At lunch, he sat right on the seam, one boot in snow and one in sand, just because nobody could tell him not to.

The only real fight happened at noon, on the tundra-swamp border, where the local predators were smart enough to use the seam — they’d lay flat in the cold and wait for prey to cross from the warm side, all mist-blind and confused.

Six of them tried to ambush him at once, white-furred on the cold side, mud-dark on the warm, moving like they’d practiced it a hundred times. A year ago, this would have been a mess. Now, with Gravebloom and two working laws on his side, it was just paperwork — blooms ate the lunges, Death-edge finished the rest, and the whole thing cost him forty seconds and earned him six first-quality proofs. The seventh member of the pack watched from the treeline, thought better of it, and vanished.

He got one more scan before evening, inside that violet patch he’d been eyeing since he arrived — a grazer the size of a wagon with crystals growing out of its back, completely harmless and worth a fortune.

[SCAN: COPPERBACK GRAZER. DANGER TO HOST: NONE. MATERIAL VALUE: CONSIDERABLE.]

He logged it, grabbed the allowed samples, and left the herd alone — seed corn, not dinner. By the time he headed back to the gate, his slate had the first real map of the Meridian Realm, thirty-one first-logs, and his storage was full of proofs. The light across the patches was doing six different kinds of sunset at once.

The clerk actually sat up when he saw the results.

He plugged the survey slate into the reader and watched the numbers climb — seam maps, logs, proofs, samples, all day-one, all first-explorer bonus. ”Thirty-one first-logs,” he muttered to himself. ”In one day. Solo.” The counter spat out its verdict without any fluff: 380 academy merit, and a Guild contribution score that dragged him from ’registered’ to ’ranked’ in less than a week.

”One more thing,” Ren said while the clerk was processing. ”Next trip, I’m staying. I’m moving in — a month, maybe two.”

The clerk took it like a pro, just pulled out a form. ”Long-stay expedition. File a return window; miss it and the Guild bills you for the search party.” He pushed the slate back. Ren logged a month, extendable, and the old man stamped it with something like a grin. ”That’s how explorers do it, kid. Day-trippers make maps. Residents make fortunes.”

The old man glanced at the registration one last time and froze. ”Valis,” he said slow-like. ”Guild family?”

”My parents. Adrian and Elena Valis.”

The old man’s weathered face did something complicated and warm. ”Thought the name sounded familiar. Hold on.” He messed with his counter for a second and pulled out a sealed message packet, guild-stamped, with a routing slip long enough to cover half the continent — it had been passed from station to station, all the way from Edius. ”Came in yesterday. Guild forwards mail for members’ kin. This is you.”

The payday back home was quieter, the Graft working through the day’s proofs and samples while the panels ticked up — small coins across half the ledger, the patchwork paying exactly how a place with every climate should.

[EARTH: 2.60% → 2.66%. FIRE: 0.84% → 0.88%. AIR: 0.24% → 0.27%. POISON: 0.12% → 0.14%.]

[FOUNDATION: 57,200 → 57,700 TONS.]

Sea by night, Meridian by day, numbers climbing on both ends — and from tomorrow, the campus was just the place his mail waited. He sent the group a quick text on the ride home: expedition, a month or two, save my seat. Yuelan’s reply came back instantly and all in caps: ”BRING ME SOMETHING.”

Ren brought it home to the Terrace without opening it, sat on the steps in the eternal dawn for a bit, and felt the weight of it like the space bead — small on the outside, huge on the inside. His parents knew their son was talented. They knew he was far away. They knew nothing else, they loved him anyway, and somewhere between one star and another they’d stopped to write to him.

He broke the seal, unfolded the first page, and smiled before he’d even read the first word. His mother still wrote exactly the way she talked.
