Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Word got out the night before. Nobody knew how. By morning, half the first-year wing knew that Ren Valis was going to attend a class.

”Sit up straight,” Kaia said, bright and happy, while he walked across campus. ”Take notes. Make friends.”

’It’s one lecture.’

”Your first one ever. I’m very proud.”

The lecture hall was the biggest one in the first-year wing, and today it was packed past its own doors. Students stood along the back wall. A few upper-years had somehow found reasons to be there. When Ren walked in — a minute late, because the crowd outside the doors had slowed him down — the whole room turned at once.

He didn’t stop. He just went up the side stairs toward the row where eight familiar people were sitting.

And there it was.

Eight of them, and nine chairs. The seat on the aisle end was empty. It had been empty every lecture, all year — Ren could tell, because Yuelan’s bag sat under it like the spot had a rule, and nobody’s notes had ever touched the desk in front of it. A whole year of classes, and they had kept a chair for the classmate who never came. None of them had ever mentioned it to him. None of them mentioned it now.

Ren sat down in his seat.

”Nice of you to join us,” Iris murmured, eyes forward.

At the front of the hall, Professor Holt looked up from his desk. He found Ren in the ninth chair, took out his attendance sheet, and ticked one box with great care.

”Valis,” he said. ”Present.”

Then he taught, and the hall slowly remembered how to breathe.

Except Holt didn’t teach the class he’d planned.

”Put your outlines away,” he said. ”We’re skipping ahead today. Way ahead. Most of you won’t need this for thirty years.” He set his notes face-down on the desk. ”Write it down anyway. Future you will thank me.”

Ren understood what the man was doing about two minutes in.

Holt knew exactly one thing about his newest attendee: first-year basics were useless to him, and this was probably the first and last lecture he would ever sit through. So Holt had thrown out the day’s plan, and he was going to spend his one chance teaching the advanced material — the stages most of this hall would never reach. A whole room of first-years was about to get a lecture aimed at one student.

It was, Ren thought, a very professor way of saying thank you for coming.

”Stage Six,” Holt began, ”is where the road ends for almost everyone. Not because people get lazy. Because the door is different. Up through Stage Five, you climb by getting stronger — more energy, better foundation, harder work. Stage Six doesn’t care about any of that. Stage Six asks how many laws you understand, and how deeply, and it will not open until the answer is enough.” He looked around the hall. ”Work gets you to Five. Understanding gets you to Six. They are not the same skill. That’s why the fastest climb from Five to Six on record took most of a century — and why some of the finest cultivators alive have been standing at that door for decades, knocking.”

Nobody in the hall said Kest’s name. Everybody in the hall thought it.

”That stalling you’ve all been gossiping about lately,” Holt went on, dry, ”is not failure. Understand that now, before any of you grow up into cruel seniors. A stalled Stage Five is a person standing in front of a locked door with no keyhole, feeling for a key that may not exist for them. Some doors never open. That is the pathway. Respect the people at the door.”

He covered the inner world next — how it grows with its owner, what feeds it and what starves it, why a rushed world cracks and a patient one carries you — and then the stage test itself. ”Requirements get you to the door,” he said. ”The test is what happens when you push it. And the test doesn’t measure your energy. It measures whether you’ll hold when everything in you says let go. There’s a reason old cultivators call it a trial and not an exam.”

Ren wrote steadily through all of it. Some of it he knew from the inside, better than the records did. But Holt kept putting clean, simple words on things Ren had only ever felt in the dark, and there was real use in that — a name is a handle, and handles let you carry things.

Then Holt got to the part that mattered.

”Last piece. The rare laws.” He held up two fingers. ”Space. Time. First, understand how the chambers are graded. Student chambers — the kind this academy keeps — serve the needs of Stage Five. For the common laws, higher chambers exist out in the wider world, built to serve even Stage Six comprehension. They are rare, and they cost fortunes, but they exist. If you make it that far, you can buy help.”

He paused.

”Except for these two. Space has Stage Six chambers — a small handful in existence, and the waiting lists on them run years. And Time?” Holt spread his hands, empty. ”Time chambers exist at one grade only: the student grade. No higher Time chamber has ever been built. Not by us, not by anyone. Now think about what that means, because for most pathways, the door to Six demands a sliver of Time — and Time is almost always the last law standing between a cultivator and that door. The one law everyone at the wall needs is the one law with no real help in existence. A student chamber crawls. Nothing better was ever made. So every cultivator who ever reached Six ground out their Time essentially alone — that record climb I told you about? Most of it was spent on Time. And most of the fine people stalled at that door for decades? Same story.”

A hand went up somewhere. Holt waved it down.

”Which leaves the question you were about to ask: then how does anyone study Time alone? The records don’t give a method. They give a pattern. Every old master who ever touched Time did the same thing — they stopped chasing, sat still, and watched things change. Rivers. Seasons. A tree aging. The texts say Time doesn’t come when you hunt it. It comes when you witness it.” He shrugged. ”Make of that what you will. In thirty years.”

Ren wrote one sentence down and underlined it.

Time comes when you witness it.

After the hall emptied, Holt caught his eye and didn’t make a speech about it.

”Worth your morning?”

”Worth more than that,” Ren said, and meant it.

”Good.” Holt gathered his face-down notes, looking quietly pleased with himself. ”Attendance is open all year, you know.”

”I know,” Ren said, which wasn’t a promise, and Holt smiled because he knew that too.

The comprehension chambers sat in a long stone building behind the law halls, and the clerk at the desk was reading something and expecting a normal day.

”Which law?” she asked, slate ready.

”Time,” Ren said. ”Highest grade you have.”

The clerk stopped reading. ”Time.” She said it the way you’d repeat a wrong order back to a customer. ”Nobody books Time. Students won’t need it for lifetimes, and the few on campus who do need it figured out fast that this room barely moves the needle — student grade is the only grade Time comes in, anywhere, and at their level it’s cheaper to go stare at a river.” She shrugged. ”That room has been empty so long we store chairs in it.”

”Then it’s available.”

”It’s — yes. It’s available.” She worked her slate. ”It’s also not cheap. The core material alone is worth more than the building.”

[TIME COMPREHENSION CHAMBER — STUDENT GRADE. THE ONLY GRADE. ONE FULL DAY.]

[MERIT: 52,780 → 50,280.]

Ren paid, and the clerk went to move the chairs out.

The chamber was small and round, and at the center of it, under glass, sat the ”core material”: a fist-sized piece of grey stone that was old in a place where nothing else was. That was the only word for it. Everything else in the room existed now. The stone had been existing for a very, very long time, and the room was built to make you feel the difference.

Ren sat down with the one law still standing between him and Stage Six, and went to work.

He worked the whole day. He did it properly — patient, steady, the same discipline that had carried every other law in his ledger. The stone’s age pressed on his senses, and he followed the thin grey thread of it as far down as it would go, over and over, hour after hour.

The thread barely moved.

[TIME: 0.2% → 0.22%. REQUIREMENT: 0.5%.]

[NOTE: THIS CHAMBER IS STUDENT GRADE. NO HIGHER TIME CHAMBER EXISTS.]

[THE REMAINING DISTANCE IS THE HOST’S ALONE.]

Ren sat in the little round room with a day of work and a number that had crawled, and started laughing quietly, because Holt had told him this exact thing eight hours ago and he’d paid two and a half thousand merit to confirm it.

”You did have to check,” Kaia said, gentle. ”That’s how you are about everything.”

’The professor said it first. The room just charged me for it.’

He looked at the old grey stone one more time on his way out. Then he took out his notes and read his own underlined sentence again.

Time comes when you witness it.

Fine. He knew where to find some things worth witnessing.

He walked home the long way, past the training towers.

It was late, and the towers were dark — except one window, high up, still lit. Ren didn’t need to look twice to know whose it was. Kaelen, grinding at the peak-Seedling wall the slow, honest way, night after night after night.

Ren read him from the road, without meaning to. Close to the peak now. Really close. But the wall after the peak was Stage Five itself, and at this pace — years. A few of them, maybe more, of exactly this: one lit window and nobody watching.

”I said I’d catch up.” That was what Kaelen had told him once.

Ren looked at the window a moment longer, then kept walking. Some climbs you weren’t allowed to shorten for a man. Not yet, anyway.

— • —

That night, in his world, Ren didn’t train.

He walked out past the flower field and sat down on the low rise above the beach, and he just watched. No technique. No panels. The tide came in, one slow finger-width at a time. The rain clouds out at sea built themselves up, changed their minds, and came apart again. Near his knee, one of his mother’s flowers folded itself closed for the night, petal by petal, taking its time about it.

He watched it the whole way, start to finish.

That was all. Nothing stirred, nothing climbed, no number moved. A flower closed, and one person saw the entire thing happen.

It was a start.

”Come to bed,” Kaia said softly, from the heart of the tree. ”Big day tomorrow.”

It was. Tomorrow was a treatment day — the family’s turn to sit with Cassian while the Alliance machine did its slow, ugly work.

Ren watched the sea a minute longer, then went in.
