Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

”Ren. Welcome home.”

The mist drifted — the tree glowed soft under his palm. Far to the south, the new sea hummed its happy song, while Ren just stood there, hand against the bark, not moving; he couldn’t move, because the voice was real, it had said his name, and if he shifted, he might wake up.

Sweet, peaceful, like still water. Exactly how he’d pictured it. Honestly, better.

Then the stillness broke, right up into his chest.

The smile started deep inside him and spread until it owned his whole face, and it didn’t come down. It just wouldn’t. He tried to stop it, out of habit, but he lost.

”Kaia,” he said aloud — her name, in his own voice, out in the open air. He’d whispered it a hundred times over the year, to the warmth, to the tree, to the quiet. But never to someone who could answer.

The light in the tree breathed. Brightened, softened, brightened — like it was closing its eyes at the sound of him.

”I’ve waited a year to hear you say that,” she said, ”and to answer you back.”

And Ren started to laugh.

It bubbled up from nowhere — a whole year of it, two worlds of it — and he just gave in, letting it run. He laughed until he had to drop into the wet grass. He laughed until his stomach hurt, lying back in his mother’s soaked flowers under his own sky, while the tree’s light flickered warm above him like it was laughing right along.

”You can talk,” he said eventually, wiping his eyes with the back of his scarred hand. Not tears; just laughing too hard. ”You can actually talk.”

”Yes.”

”Since when? How? Is it—” A dozen questions tried to crowd out, jamming in his throat.

”Slowly,” she said, and he could hear the smile in the word. ”We have so much time now.”

He let the questions go. There was one that couldn’t wait, and it wasn’t really a question, so he said it plain, up at the branches.

”Was it the merge? The core?”

”You built a world strong enough to hold a voice,” Kaia said. ”Then you brought it a sea. The last clear water finished what you started. Everything I am, you grew.”

Ren lay in the flowers, letting that settle over him with the mist.

”Sixteen times,” he said, after a bit, voice quieter. ”I died sixteen times, and I always woke up right here. In the field.”

”Yes.”

”That was you, wasn’t it. The field wasn’t just the talent picking a spot. It was you, choosing one.”

The light in the tree turned very soft.

”Who do you think caught you,” she said, ”every single time?”

Ren looked up at his tree for a long moment.

”Thank you,” he said. ”For every one of them.”

”Welcome home,” she said again, and this time it meant something even bigger than the first, and neither of them felt the need to explain it.

They didn’t talk much after that, and it was the good kind of silence.

Ren stayed in the field as the mist thinned and the stars of his own sky came out — new constellations tonight, he noticed, hanging over a coastline that didn’t exist this morning. The breeze drifted up from the south carrying the ocean’s song, soft and distant, and for the first time in its life, the world felt lived-in. Full. Busy, in the gentlest way.

Eventually he moved to the tree, sitting down against it, back to the bark, just like the old way — except tonight, the warmth on the other side had a voice, and he didn’t have to imagine the words.

His eyes started to drift on their own.

”Sleep,” Kaia said, from everywhere and from right beside him. ”I’ll watch.”

And then, softer:

”Goodnight, Ren.”

Ren went completely still.

He hadn’t heard that in two worlds. Not since a hologram call and a gentle voice, a planet’s width away, a life ago. He’d forgotten that people actually got to hear that at the end of a day — somebody saying it to them, and really meaning it.

”Goodnight, Kaia,” he said quietly.

He fell asleep with his back against his tree, the breeze moving through the flowers, the sea singing somewhere far off, and a soft smile still on his face, refusing, even in sleep, to leave.

The night grew deep and still.

The mist settled. The song from the south dimmed to almost nothing. The tree’s light burned low and warm over the sleeping shape at its roots, steady as a held candle, and for a long time, nothing in the whole young world moved.

Then, quietly, over the sound of his breathing, Kaia spoke again.

”Get stronger, Ren. Faster.”

The light trembled.

”For all of us.”

A pause. The voice came back smaller — still sweet, still like water, but water pressed thin over stone.

”I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I can’t tell you the tru—”

The word broke in the middle.

A small sound followed — wet, caught, and quickly swallowed — the first sound of hers that Ren ever slept through.

Then the light dimmed, holding him gently, and the world said nothing more until morning.

Dawn came up gold over a coastline that was only a day old.

Ren woke with dew on his sleeves after the best sleep he’d had in a season — the whole night, unbroken, no shifts, no clocks, no glowing mountains behind his eyelids. He stretched, felt the smile still on his face, and decided to leave it there.

He walked south through the wet flowers to see his ocean in the morning light.

And stopped.

The sea was still.

Not calm — still. From the shallows to the far dark line of deep water, nothing swam, nothing hunted, nothing moved. The whales hung motionless at the surface in a long, silent row. Below them, the serpents held their coils. The moonveils floated fixed between the drowned towers like lamps nobody was carrying. Even the little coin-bright mirrorfins, ten thousand of them, hung in one vast sheet in the shallow gold water, perfectly still.

All of them were facing the same way.

Every creature in his sea, from the greatest whale to the smallest fish, silent, unmoving, turned toward the Worldroot — toward the hill, toward the tree, toward him — the way a world turns toward the sunrise.
