Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The morning after the duel, the whole school had one topic.

The fight feeds kept looping all night long. The one clip everyone passed around was just twelve seconds of Kest burning his five best moves against a plain green shield, and then hearing Ren say, ”My turn.”

By breakfast, the upper-year who ran the broadcast channel dropped one line — ”I was wrong about the Edius group” — and killed the channel for good. Nobody gave him trouble. Everyone else had been just as wrong until yesterday.

The nickname showed up by breakfast too. Someone pulled that line about things sitting in one spot too long, and by mid-morning, the whole campus was calling him that. Academy files still read Riven Kest. Everyone else just said Furniture.

And in every dining hall and training yard, the same argument happened: what even is Ren Valis? Nobody dared suggest Stage Six. Everyone knew the climb from Five to Six was a nightmare — the fastest in academy history took nearly a century. So the campus settled on the only answer left.

A Stage Five like that shouldn’t exist.

On that, everyone finally agreed.

Professor Holt caught up with him on the way to the market — the first-year theory guy whose class Ren had skipped since he arrived. His robes looked messy and he was holding a coffee.

”Valis.” He walked alongside him. ”You know you’ve been on my roster since you enrolled? I check attendance. Your column is just a neat little row of empty boxes.”

”I’ve been off-campus.”

”I heard. Everybody heard.” Holt took a sip of coffee and stopped trying to look serious. ”Come to one lecture before you outgrow the whole building. Just one. I want to tell people I actually taught you something.”

”I’ll be there,” Ren said, and he meant it.

”Good.” Holt turned toward the halls, then walked backward a bit. ”That shield of yours. First-week weave, cast five times in one second?” He just shook his head, grinning. ”Come. Please.”

A runner found him near the arena and handed him a note. No seal. No crest. Just handwriting so perfect it looked like a machine did it.

The five people in my box run schools and armies on other worlds. They arrived thinking I had overpaid for a first-year. They left asking how to spell your name. That was the point of the invitation. — H.

General Halvern. That explained why the box was full of random big-shots. The duel was Ren’s fight and the General’s proof, wrapped into one.

Ren read the note twice, stuffed it in storage by his Gold Surveyor plate, and went to get groceries.

’The General doesn’t waste seats.’

That afternoon, the campus drifted toward the challenge board. Ren walked the other way, carrying two bags of food.

The apology wasn’t his to watch. He’d made the deal for the eight, not for himself — so let them go stand there and take it. He had dinner to cook.

Halfway up Terrace hill, someone fell into step with him. The grey-robed elder who had judged the duel.

”Your braid,” the elder started, skipping the pleasantries. ”The healers spent an hour just getting it loose. Life over Death over one thread of Poison — built to hurt without leaving a mark. They’re writing a paper on it. Instructors want copies.” He sounded happy, even if he looked a little embarrassed about it. ”Who taught you that?”

”Nobody. It seemed rude to kill him.”

The elder laughed. A real, belly-shaking laugh — a passing first-year nearly walked right into a lamp post.

”Rude,” he said, wiping his eye. ”Fifty years judging these. That’s a first.” He nodded at the bags. ”Go cook. I’ll be watching you, Valis.”

Then he vanished — the same silent step he’d used in the arena.

The board updated while the rice simmered. Ren’s slate buzzed on the counter.

[TERMS: SETTLED.]

He didn’t check the feed. He stirred the pot and waited, and near sunset, he heard his family coming up the hill before he saw them.

Yuelan kicked the door open, already acting it out. ”—AND THEN HE BOWED. A real bow! Forehead-level! To ME first, because it was alphabetical—”

”It wasn’t alphabetical,” Iris said, coming in behind her. ”It was just where we were standing.”

”Cassian said—”

”I said it FELT alphabetical,” Cassian said, limping in on a day-pass, ”which is the most organized I have ever felt. He read us out like a roll call. I nearly stood at attention.”

Ren kept stirring. ”So he did it properly.”

”He did it properly.” Iris sat and folded her hands. ”Under the board. Same spot as the interviews. Camera on. No notes. He said — exact words — ’I said things about eight people that were not true. I knew they were not true when I said them.’ Then he said our names, one at a time, looking at us. Then he bowed. Then he left. No questions.”

”He looked hollow,” Vesper said, not looking up from her notes. ”Not acting. Empty. Every word hurt, and he said them anyway.”

Kaelen, leaning against the wall: ”He meant it.”

The kitchen went quiet for a beat. Then Yuelan got loud again, the table filled up, and dinner was served.

Late in the meal, Ren noticed Yuelan had gone quiet. He looked up. She was over by the center wall, where the bracket she’d ordered had been empty for two days. She set the reedfencer blade into it — the bone-metal one from the realm, the one she’d kept by the door since the challenge went up. She lined it up with her fingers until it was perfect. She wiped the dust off the bracket with her sleeve.

Then she walked back to the table and stole some of Cassian’s food, and nobody mentioned the wall.

After dinner, while the Terrace started on card games, Ren slipped into his inner world.

Warm air met him. The Worldroot’s light stood tall in the west. And where the horizon used to end at open land, there was now an ocean.

It still got to him, every time. Silver water as far as he could see. Islands scattered in a long chain. And deep down, a faint glow — the drowned district, its old light still burning at the bottom of his sea.

He walked to the new coast, and the sea felt him. It always did.

Ward surfaced first, a few hundred meters out — the scarred whale who led the pod now. Just his back and one eye, checking on him. Knock, the calf, bumped the shallows twice to say hello. By the time Ren sat on a rock, half the keepers had found reasons to be nearby, and Snap the cellarclaw stood on the sand, saluting nobody.

Ren came here to solve a problem. The problem was currently watching him with big, fond eyes.

”Okay,” he said, to the sea and to Kaia. ”Sooner or later, the family sees all this. Vesper and Eira can walk in whenever. The others only have to ask on a day I say yes. And the first thing they’ll see is an ocean that wasn’t here before — full of you.”

Ward rumbled. It could have meant anything.

”So I need a story. Try this: I grafted it.”

”Using what?” Kaia asked, sweet as ever. ”The Guild has your haul list. Iris reads those for fun.”

”Fine. They followed me home.”

Ward picked that exact second to surface completely — all of him, huge as a hill, water pouring off his back in sheets.

”Fifteen of you,” Kaia said. ”All Stage Five. Following a student home.”

”I said it was a draft.”

Then there was the part he already knew, and made himself think about. Near the end of the expedition, Vesper and Eira had stepped in for a visit — and saw a brand-new ocean sitting where the horizon used to be. They walked back out and never asked him one question. Not one. They just kept passing him food at dinner, like nothing happened.

They deserved better than a draft.

”Real one, then,” he said. ”Talents wake up. Everyone knows I have a strange one — the Graft, that grows this world out of materials. And Vesper’s already woken a second branch of her own bloodline, so second talents happen.” He laid it out. Most of it was true. Only the talent part was the lie. ”So: out in the realm, a second talent woke up in me. It finds the remains of dead worlds in the deep, and pulls what’s left into my world. That’s where the ocean came from. Where the creatures came from. A dead sea, given a place to live.”

The keepers listened to their own cover story. Nobody objected.

”And when Iris counts fifteen Stage Fives?” Kaia asked.

”They weren’t this strong when they arrived,” Ren said. ”My world grows whatever it keeps. She’s seen it happen to two people she eats with.”

A pause.

”Tell them less than you told me,” Kaia said. ”Keep the shape true. Give no numbers. Let the world explain itself — it’s better at it than you are.”

”Noted.” He looked at the silver water. ”It needs a name. Talents have names.” He tried it out loud: ”Harbor. A harbor is a safe place where ships rest after the open sea. That’s what my world is for them.”

Knock bumped the shallows twice.

”Harbor,” Kaia said, tasting the word. ”It’s almost true. That’s exactly why it’ll work.”

[THE GRAVEYARD OF WORLDS HAS BEEN INFORMED OF ITS NEW NAME.]

”It’ll cope,” Ren said.

He sat a while, until the Worldroot’s light went soft. He didn’t say out loud that he was tired of needing lies this good for the people he loved.

”Come back for breakfast,” Kaia said.

He stepped back to the cool Terrace evening, took one breath, and stopped.

Lyra was at the gate.

She leaned against the post like she’d been there a while and planned to stay all night. Before the expedition, she’d told him plainly: you owe me a conversation. He’d owed it ever since.

”You owe me a conversation,” Lyra said. ”I’m collecting.”

She hadn’t come alone.

Iris stood at her shoulder, arms crossed, waiting.
