Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The core was warm in his fist, and for one breath nothing happened at all.

The box stood open in its own pale light, the sea’s after-song had gone quiet, and Ren stood in the middle of a drowned square holding the last inheritance a dead people had ever made.

Then the core let go of what it had been carrying.

There was no sound this time, and no pictures — the whales had owned those. This came through his palm instead, climbed his arm, and settled into his body until his hands simply started knowing things.

The lantern-shaped device came first: how to wake it, how to carry it, which side rested against his chest, where it wanted his energy fed in. A caretaker’s manual, small and patient, pressed straight into muscle and memory until his hands knew it the way they knew how to swim — no memory of lessons, just the certainty that they could.

Then came the weapon.

Or, more accurately, the pattern for one.

It unfolded through him one motion at a time.

Gather the sea into a point; squeeze that point past water, past pressure, past anything that still had a name, until nothing remained in front of the palm except a hollow of pure absence — a hole the world hated having there.

Then let go.

Let the world slam it shut.

The collapse fired forward, a spear of implosion followed by a flash of light and heat like a star existing for one very bad instant.

And the hit landed before its own sound.

Ren went still.

He knew that trick.

The Cellarclaw had done it during the survey — the table-sized ambusher whose claw cracked the water, while the sound limped in after the strike like it had missed the beginning of the fight.

A snap like that had killed him once in the warring land too. The System had filed him under seafood twice and enjoyed both occasions.

And even further back, in another life, he’d watched something similar on a glowing screen: a shrimp small enough to fit on a spoon, snapping its claw hard enough that the sea answered with light, heat, and pressure.

He’d thought it was neat.

Apparently somebody had built a weapon out of it.

The builders hadn’t invented their killshot; they’d learned it from the sea, which had been doing it first in more worlds than any of them probably knew existed.

The core wasn’t the weapon itself.

It carried the instructions for becoming one.

And now those instructions lived in his hands.

The rest came with it. The compression was the gate, and creating that point of nothing demanded an energy density high enough that his channels flinched just from rehearsing the motion.

The builders’ energy had been clean, stable, gentle.

It had also never been dense enough.

They’d built a gun no living arm could load.

His could.

The pattern carried more than the final technique too; generations of practice were buried inside it.

The earliest repetitions gripped too hard, movements rough with people trying to squeeze something that wasn’t there yet. The middle ones were slower and cleaner, careful in the way people became careful when they were packing a house they already knew they weren’t coming back to.

The final repetitions were different.

Steady.

Patient.

Aimed forward.

At someone the builders knew they would never meet.

Ren, as things had turned out.

Somewhere in the middle of all that, Kaia’s warmth folded around him from inside and stayed there, quiet through the whole flood, asking for nothing.

When it finally released him, Ren was down on one knee against the drowned stone.

The core in his hand had gone quiet.

Its dark surface had faded to ordinary grey, and whatever it had spent generations carrying wasn’t inside anymore.

Ren didn’t throw it away.

He put it into storage the way he’d handle an urn.

[PATTERN IMPRINT: COMPLETE.]

[SECRET TECHNIQUE ACQUIRED. MASTERY: PROFICIENT.]

[DESIGNATION: NONE RECORDED.]

Ren read the last panel twice.

No name.

Of course there wasn’t.

They’d scraped their names off their own doors; they weren’t going to sign the weapon they left behind.

He thought about the spoon-sized shrimp from his old world, the Cellarclaw’s late-arriving crack, and the trench-dark thing this technique had been built to reach.

”Deepsnap,” he said.

[DESIGNATION REGISTERED: DEEPSNAP.]

He stayed beside the box for a while, letting the new knowledge settle, and the more he looked at Deepsnap, the more it refused to fit beside the rest of his arsenal.

Heavenpiercer, Stormsever, Meteorfall — those were techniques. Give them more energy, better laws, a stronger body, and they hit harder. He’d already pushed the shapes themselves about as far as they went; everything after that came from what he fed through them.

Deepsnap wasn’t like that.

It didn’t tell his energy what shape to take.

It told the world what to do.

Ren frowned at the difference, then mentally dragged Last Pyre and Ghostveil over beside it.

Last Pyre burned more than a body. Ghostveil didn’t simply hide him; it erased his presence from things that should have noticed him. And now Deepsnap made a piece of the sea collapse on command.

Different shelf.

[CLASSIFICATION: PRINCIPLE ART.]

”Right,” Ren muttered. ”That explains a few things.”

The next part was less convenient.

He could use Principle Arts.

He could improve them.

He apparently couldn’t make one.

That much became obvious once the imprint settled. Creating something like Deepsnap from nothing needed either a law understood all the way to its end, or what these people had done — generations of work poured into one idea until the finished thing knew more than any single person who’d helped build it.

Ren had neither.

OPTIMIZE wasn’t a loophole either. It could take an existing art, tear it apart, rebuild it around his body, and keep improving it until the original barely recognized itself.

But it still needed something to start with.

Every Ren Valis Version he’d ever made had somebody else’s work underneath it.

[OPTIMIZE RESHAPES WHAT EXISTS.]

[IT DOES NOT INVENT.]

Ren stared at the panels.

’So I can’t grow these. I can only find them.’

Boxes. Archives. Inheritance grounds. Whatever old monsters had decided to leave behind.

’Good to know.’

He filed that away and stood.

The lantern-shaped device came out of its cradle next, and his hands already knew exactly where it wanted to be held. He stored it, then took the rack too, cradles and all, every strange made thing still sleeping in its fitted place.

[ARTIFACTS STORED.]

[CONTENTS RESPOND TO THE HOST’S ENERGY. FUNCTIONS: UNKNOWN. ANALYSIS: QUEUED.]

The box itself stayed.

Its light didn’t weaken when the contents left; the covered district remained exactly as it had been, pale plants growing, senses reaching farther than the sea normally allowed.

Whatever else the box had been built to do, it was still keeping that one old promise.

At the edge of the square, Ren stopped.

Then turned around.

The two-finger tap he’d traded with the whales all month felt too small this time, so he walked back to the open petals, put his whole palm against the not-quite-stone, and left it there for one slow count.

There weren’t any words for people who had erased their own names.

So he didn’t try to find some.

Then he went to work.

— • —

The district released him at its clean line of light, and the sunken world took him back the usual way — awareness folding down to his skin while the lit streets behind him shrank into one pale window in the dark.

He passed the last rooftops and kept going, farther out across the deadest stretch of seabed he’d found during the survey, until there were no dens, no small creatures, no drowned streets, and nothing nearby he particularly cared about breaking.

Good enough.

The pod’s song sat low somewhere behind him, the same way it had for most of the month.

Ren set his feet the way the pattern wanted, raised his right arm, and let his hands do what they now knew.

Water gathered at a point in front of his palm.

More followed.

Then more.

Squeeze.

Past water.

Past pressure.

Past anything with a name.

[COMPRESSION THRESHOLD: MET.]

A hollow of pure nothing appeared in front of his hand, no larger than a marble, and the whole sea leaned toward it.

Ren let go.

The world slammed shut.

Everything directly ahead of him seemed to disappear into the collapse for one instant, then the force fired forward faster than anything Ren had ever produced.

For a single heartbeat, there was a star in the deep — white and soundless, throwing his shadow backward across the seabed while the ocean floor tore open along the line, scooped out as if something enormous had dragged one finger through wet clay.

Then the water crashed back in.

The dark returned.

And only afterward came the sound — late, rushing after the attack as though embarrassed to have been left behind.

The bill arrived immediately after.

Ren’s right arm went dead from fingertip to shoulder.

Not torn.

Not damaged, as far as he could tell.

Just—

off.

His channels burned along the whole limb, squeezed hard enough that the pain felt like a cramp buried inside the bones.

Ren sat down on the edge of the trench he’d just made and started working his fingers with his left hand.

’Worse than the pattern promised.’

Fair enough.

The builders had only ever rehearsed the technique; they’d passed him the motions with the price estimated in the margins.

Nobody before Ren had actually fired the thing.

[SAFE DISCHARGE LIMIT BEFORE CHANNEL DAMAGE: THREE PER ENGAGEMENT.]

[RECOVERY BETWEEN DISCHARGES ADVISED.]

[THE HOST HAS BECOME THE SEAFOOD.]

Ren stared at the last panel.

”Yeah,” he said, flexing two fingers that had finally started listening again. ”I noticed.”

Something light rippled through his bond with Kaia.

Amusement.

The first genuinely light thing either of them had felt since hearing the whales’ history.

Ren decided she could have that one.

[OPTIMIZE: AVAILABLE.]

[DIRECTIONS: EFFICIENCY. COMPRESSION. IMPACT.]

He read the options twice while his arm slowly came back online.

Cheaper shots, faster compression, harder impact.

All useful.

None worth choosing while half his arm was numb and he had nothing sensible nearby to test the result on.

”Not tonight.”

The menu disappeared without an argument, which from the System was practically good manners.

Ren eventually stood and looked back toward the drowned city.

The distant song had changed.

He couldn’t see the pod from this far away, but he didn’t need to; every whale’s voice had turned toward him at once, the sound reaching him face-on now instead of rolling past as background.

Nobody sang louder.

Nobody approached.

They simply listened.

The whales knew that sound.

They’d known it longer than Ren had been alive.

Then the song caught.

One missed beat.

Every voice, at exactly the same moment.

The choir returned a breath later, lower now, tighter, pressing down toward the far-below harder than Ren had ever heard it press before.

It didn’t relax again.

Ren stood at the head of the trench, the last numbness draining from his arm, and listened.

The deep had heard its killer’s voice.

Far beneath the song, past every depth the survey had ever reached, something turned over in its sleep.
