Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The claiming pulled him home.

One heartbeat Ren was in the little stone room at the bottom of a dead sea, with the core warm in both hands. The next he was on his knees in the grass of his own world, under the Worldroot, in the calm gold light he had grown from nothing — and the core was sinking out of his hands, into the great tree’s heart, like a stone sinking into deep water.

The Worldroot drank the last clear water of the sunken world.

For one moment the whole tree lit from inside, root to crown.

And through the bond, Kaia’s warmth began to tremble — not the scared kind from before. The other kind. The kind you get when something wonderful is arriving and there’s too much of it to hold still for.

[MERGE: INITIATED.]

[THE FIRST MERGE IN THE FUNCTION’S HISTORY BEGINS.]

Ren got to his feet, and the sky split open.

— • —

It didn’t break. It opened — the whole southern sky folding back like a door, and behind it was water.

An ocean, arriving.

It came down in walls and sheets and slow silver mountains, and the land ran out to catch it — his world’s ground stretching south faster than any eye should be allowed to watch, hills rising, coasts drawing themselves, islands surfacing like backs of sleeping animals. The sea poured in and the world grew around it, and neither one stopped.

[PLANAR ENERGY INFLOW: FROM THE BOUNDLESS SEA OF PLANES.]

[SCALE: BEYOND PROJECTION.]

[THE WORLD GROWS.]

Ren stood under the Worldroot with his head back and understood, in a small dazed way, that the merge was not just moving a fragment into his world. The function had opened a door to something bigger, and raw planar energy was pouring through it from the sea that held all planes, and his world was drinking it like a seed drinks the first rain.

His world was not doubling.

It was multiplying.

Deep in his blood, something old woke up. The same old presence that had stirred once during the expedition — turned over in its sleep at a payday, and settled. Ren had almost forgotten it. This time it did not turn over. It hummed, low and clear, like a struck string.

Then it held, and went quiet, and was just blood again.

Ren filed it in the drawer of things with no answers yet. Today had no room for it.

— • —

The city came next.

The new ocean’s floor darkened in one place, and then the drowned city was simply there — whole, preserved, standing on the seabed of his world exactly as it had stood in its own: towers and streets and empty doorways, the little child-sized door low in one wall, the grand avenue running through the middle of everything.

And at its center, in its square, stood the open box.

The lamps of the covered district came on around it, the same pale patient light, still keeping the same old promise. Below the city, faint and deep, the Worldroot’s grafted light shone up through the ground and into the water — a lamp under the sea, burning where its people could never see it and its guests always would.

His world had its first monument.

Ren looked at it for a long moment and didn’t touch any part of the feeling. Some things you just let stand.

— • —

Then the sea filled up with its people.

They came school by school, like guests coming into a new house — carefully, and then all at once. The mirrorfin drifters first, ten thousand thrown coins turning together in the new light. Then the moonveil jellies, lighting one by one between the drowned towers like lamps being carried in. The undertow serpents. The small nameless quick ones. Shape after shape after shape, pouring out of the deep south and spreading into every reach of a young ocean, and the water itself seemed to wake up more with every arrival.

And last came the whales.

The pod entered his world as they had crossed their own — slow, together, in a long unhurried line — with the hurt one at the front, its welt already looking older, leading from the exact place where the eldest used to swim.

[SURPRISE.]

Ren blinked at the panel.

[ALL MIGRATED LIFE HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO THE HOST’S WORLD SYSTEM.]

[STAGES HAVE BEEN ASSIGNED ACCORDING TO THEIR STRENGTH. THEIR LAW COMPREHENSION HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AND RECORDED.]

[THEIR STRENGTH HAS BEEN TRANSLATED. NOT CHANGED.]

[IN THE CROSSING, THEIR SOULS TOOK ROOT IN THIS WORLD.]

[THEY CANNOT BETRAY THE HOST. IN ALL ELSE, THEY REMAIN FREE.]

Ren read the block three times, like anything with fine print.

Converted. Every creature in his new sea now ran on his world’s system — staged, measured, written into the same ledger he was. The whales had stages now. The little coin-fish had stages. And their souls had rooted in the crossing, deep enough that betrayal simply wasn’t in them anymore — not as a chain, but as a fact, like water not being able to burn.

His eye stopped on the last line, which was the one that mattered.

In all else, they remain free.

They could refuse him. Argue with him. Swim away from him. They just couldn’t be turned against him — not by fear, not by force, not by anything. Home would never knife him in the back, and would still be allowed to tell him no.

”You saved the word ’surprise’ for this,” Ren said to the empty air. ”You know what? Fair. That’s a good surprise.”

The System, having spent its one word for the century, said nothing.

— • —

Out on the new water, a whale breached.

It was one of the younger ones. It came up out of the sea into open air — into sunlight, real sunlight, the first any of their kind had felt in living memory — a mountain of dark body clearing the water, turning, hanging there against the sky.

The crash of it came back like applause.

Ren’s chest went tight, because he had seen this exact arc once before, made of light, made of goodbye. This one was made of muscle and spray and it was very, very alive.

Then the whole pod began to sing.

Not the lid. The lid was finished. Not the mourning song either, and not the last song — nothing that carried the old world’s weight in it.

A new song.

It started small, one voice trying something, and the others picked it up and built it — bright where the old songs were deep, quick where they were slow, rising and rising, full of turns that sounded almost like laughing. A song with no grief anywhere in it. A song for a life that was just now starting, in a sea that was one hour old, under a sky none of them had ever been promised.

His ocean learned its first song, and it was a happy one.

— • —

The eldest and the garden came home last, together, exactly as he had promised.

The deep south of the new ocean opened, and the vast dead body of the first mad one settled onto the floor of it — the garden becoming seabed, its flesh already feeding the young water, the whale-fall custom finished at the scale of a world. And on its back, where it had come to rest and never been moved, lay the eldest.

Ren made the water above them the calmest in his world. No current would trouble that place. No storm would ever reach its floor.

”Welcome home,” he said quietly. ”Both of you.”

The pod’s new song dipped low for one passing moment as it swept over that part of the sea — a nod inside the music — and then rose bright again and carried on.

— • —

The first cloud in the history of his world formed in the late afternoon.

Ren watched it happen from the flower field. The new ocean had been breathing all day — water up into a sky that had never held any — and the sky finally breathed back. Grey-white towers stacked themselves over the southern water, drifted inland over the hills he’d grown, and gathered, low and heavy, above his mother’s flowers.

[WEATHER SYSTEM: ACTIVE.]

[FIRST RAINFALL: IMMINENT.]

The first drop landed on a white petal and knocked it sideways.

Then the rain came down — soft, and steady, and completely ordinary, the most ordinary miracle Ren had ever stood inside. It fell on the flower field that had caught him through sixteen deaths. It fell on flowers grown from his mother’s seeds, watered until today by nothing but his own two hands.

Ren stood in the middle of it, soaked through in half a minute, and opened his scarred right hand to the sky.

The rain filled his palm. It pooled along the thin line of the scar, cool and clean, and ran over.

He stood there a long time.

Kaia’s joy came through the bond in waves with the weather, trembling, bright, too big to hold still — her whole world drinking its first rain — and Ren let his hand stay open until the light started to slant gold through the falling water.

— • —

In the evening, the numbers came to him, and even the System seemed to take a breath before showing them.

[STATUS.]

[STAGE: FIVE — WORLD CREATION. FOUNDATION: 72,100 → 810,000 TONS.]

[LAWS: LIFE 10.2% → 12.5% · DEATH 10.8% → 13.0% · WATER 3.55% → 10.5% · EARTH 3.44% → 5.5% · FIRE 1.49% → 2.2% · AIR 0.52% → 4.9% · DARKNESS 0.42% → 6.0% · LIGHT 0.33% → 1.2% · POISON 0.24% → 2.0% · SPACE 0.05% → 0.9% · TIME 0.0% → 0.2%.]

[WORLD: 336.4 → 2,184.6 SQ MI. STATUS: THRIVING.]

Ren sat down in the wet grass and read it all twice.

Every line of it had grown — every law on the ledger fatter than it had been this morning, because a whole world had come home carrying pieces of everything a world is made of.

Then the System showed him the door.

[STAGE SIX — PLANET LORD. REQUIREMENTS:]

[WATER 5% — MET. EARTH 5% — MET. LIFE 1% — MET. DEATH 1% — MET. LIGHT 1% — MET. DARKNESS 1% — MET. SPACE 0.5% — MET.]

[FIRE 5% — NOT MET. AIR 5% — NOT MET. TIME 0.5% — NOT MET.]

[UPON BREAKTHROUGH, THE INNER WORLD EXPANDS TO ITS STAGE-SIX.]

Seven rows green. Three rows short.

Air had stopped one tenth short of its gate, which felt personal. And at the very bottom of the ledger sat a line that had never existed before this morning: Time. Tiny. New. Awake. A whole dead world’s age had crossed into him with the merge, and apparently it had left something behind.

Ren looked at that list for a long, quiet while — at how short it had gotten, at the enormous door standing that much ajar — and felt the new weight of himself settle in, like a bigger body after a growth spurt: more of everything, answering slower and hitting harder.

’Fire. Air. Time.’

’That’s the whole bill left. Huh.’

He didn’t celebrate. It was too big to celebrate. He filed it away and got up out of the grass, because the light was going amber and there was one more thing he wanted to do before the day ended.

— • —

He walked to the Worldroot in the last of the rain.

The great tree stood over its world — bigger tonight, he was fairly sure, though it had grown so gradually all day that he couldn’t point at when — and deep in its heart, where the trunk met the oldest roots, the grafted core glowed through the bark. A soft light. A lamp behind a door. The last clear water of a dead world, alive inside the tree of a living one.

Ren put his scarred palm flat against the bark, because that was what the palm was for now.

The warmth inside the tree gathered.

He felt it move — through the wood, through the bond, through the middle of him — everything Kaia was, drawing itself together at the heart of the tree the way breath draws together before speech. The whole world went very quiet. The rain softened to mist. Even the new song, far to the south, seemed to lean in.

And out of the warmth at the heart of the tree, for the first time in their whole shared life, came a voice.

Sweet, and peaceful, like still water.
