Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The first thing Ren tested was the oldest fear in the world. From Tier 2, your body doesn’t need air anymore — it just runs on energy, steady and constant. Knowing that is one thing; actually believing it is something else. He stood by the pocket’s silver wall, took a breath that didn’t matter, and stepped through to let the sea take him.

Cold. Pressure. The silence sat heavy on his ears like a pair of patient hands. And there was no burn in his chest — his lungs were quiet, his energy cycling through him like a wheel, giving his body exactly what the air used to. He hung in the blue with fish watching from every side, not breathing, not drowning, and laughed a stream of silver bubbles at the ceiling of light far above.

Movement came next, and that was when Gravebloom stopped being armor and became a way of walking. Swimming with fifty-six thousand tons of foundation was fast enough — but water doesn’t give you anything solid to cut against, not until he remembered his heels. The petal-blooms fired underwater just like they did in the forge, black flowers blooming out of nothing, and Ren found he could RUN through the sea — kicking off blossom after blossom, climbing the water like a staircase, cornering mid-depth in ways no fish in this ocean ever had to.

Floating above the drowned city with petals wilting under his boots, he did what any farmer does with a new field. He gave it a name. The last place had earned its name with a month of war; this one had already told him what it was, through towers and bridges and streets full of sleeping dark.

’The sunken world,’ he thought, and in the back of his mind, Kaia tasted the name and approved.

The hunt started like a parade, because the sunken world apparently wanted to show him its entire wardrobe on day one.

The beautiful stuff came first. The coin-bright watchers from the wall were just schools of palm-sized fish, their scales catching the sunbeams like stained glass; they’d turn in unison, and the light rippled through them in shifting pictures.

Further down the streets he passed a garden of house-sized jellyfish, veils of moon-pale silk drifting between the towers while their tendrils combed the water, all lit from the inside like lamps behind curtains. They were the loveliest things he’d seen since his own world’s dawn.

”Wasn’t going to,” Ren said, and gave the garden the kind of wide, respectful berth a man gives to anything the System warns him about twice.

The terrifying stuff came next, and it showed up disguised as weather. A current caught him crossing a plaza — a strong, smooth pull that seemed like ordinary water until it flexed — and the scan hit the same second the current’s end opened a mouth.

[SCAN: UNDERTOW SERPENT. THE CURRENT IS A CREATURE. DANGER TO HOST: HIGH.]

It was forty feet of glass-clear muscle, invisible in the open, and it had been drinking him toward its teeth since the edge of the plaza. Ren let it pull. At the last second, he petal-stepped OUT of the current sideways — the serpent’s jaws snapped on withering black petals — and he drew Heavenpiercer down its flank, grey light tracing the edge, just like he’d practiced a hundred times in the warring land for absolutely nothing.

This time, the law bit.

Grey soaked into the clear flesh and the flesh remembered it was mortal — the wound aged, slackened, and spread wide like a season passing through a single body. The serpent convulsed, and Ren, feeling a month of dead weight fall off his shoulders, finished it with a Life-edged backhand cut that burst green-gold through the wound like spring flooding a valley: overgrowth cracking it from the inside, two laws working one kill from both ends of the door.

[LAW CONDUCTION: ACTIVE. LIFE / DEATH — EFFECT CONFIRMED.]

The natives of the sunken world were alive — truly, ordinarily, killably alive — and for the first time in two worlds, everything Ren carried actually worked. He hung in the water beside the drifting kill, grinning like an idiot, while a hundred small watchers in the blue blinked at him without looking away.

He worked the streets for hours, and the parade kept its promise — small to giant, lovely to wrong. Shell-crabs like walking anvils that his Death-edge opened like old fruit. Blade-thin hunters that schooled like knives in formation, then scattered like dropped cutlery once the third group in a row lost its nerve — word traveled fast in a sea where everything watched. Far overhead, once, a shadow the length of a street slid across the sun, and the scan came back the way they do when the System wants him gone.

[SCAN — PARTIAL: HUSHWHALE. DANGER TO HOST: DO NOT FIND OUT.]

The sea’s slow heartbeat, he realized, wasn’t the sea at all. It was them — the hushwhales, singing somewhere below hearing, a pulse the whole world kept time to. He watched the giant cross the light and made no move it could read as a question.

The scare came at a doorway. He was working along a terrace of drowned houses, storing kills, and the house at the end of the row stood open and dark in a way that looked like shelter — he was two strides from the threshold when the threshold moved. The doorway snapped shut like a jaw, because it WAS a jaw: stone-colored lips, hinge-teeth as long as his arm, a tongue like a cellar floor — and the only reason Ren’s head stayed on his shoulders was the bloom that exploded against the bite, the biggest Gravebloom he’d ever grown, black petals grinding against teeth for the half-second he needed to petal-step backward out of the closing dark.

[SCAN: HOUSEMAW. THE BUILDING IS BAIT. DANGER TO HOST: SEVERE.]

He came to a stop thirty feet back with his heart hammering for the first time all day, watching a house pretend to be a house again, its doorway easing open onto inviting shadow. The bloom that saved him withered slower than the others, like even his armor needed a moment. ”Noted,” Ren told the lattice, the sea, and his own pulse. ”In the sunken world, the architecture eats.”

Then he killed it anyway, because it had nearly taken his head and because payback is its own kind of survey. It took both laws, a Stormsever that shredded the plaza, and the ugliest three minutes of the day — the housemaw died the way buildings die, in a slow collapse of itself — and when Ren cut open the gullet behind the doorway-jaw to store the meat, he found the centuries.

Bones, first. Layers of them, fish and shell and things he didn’t recognize, a predator’s ledger going back further than he wanted to guess. And half-buried in the oldest layer, catching his light with a gleam that had no business surviving that stomach: a disc of worked metal the size of his fist — engraved edge to edge in fine, deliberate lines, precise as clockwork, unmistakably MADE. Not grown, not natural. Made by hands, for a purpose, by whoever had built the towers this ocean drowned.

The payday panels ran long that evening, back on the safe side of the arch.

[FOUNDATION: 56,500 → 57,200 TONS.]

Water had eaten like a starving thing — cheap ground, paid in every body the sea owned — and Ren read the numbers with a farmer’s deep satisfaction before he set them aside and picked up the real find of the day. Under the lamplight of his own world, the disc gleamed like it had been engraved that morning. The sea hadn’t been allowed to touch it. However many centuries it had spent in a monster’s stomach at the bottom of a dead ocean, not one line of the engraving had softened.

[ANALYSIS: MANUFACTURED. AGE: PREDATES THE WORLD’S DEATH.]

[FUNCTION: UNKNOWN.]

Ren turned it over in his hands, feeling the fine lines catch his thumb, thinking about towers and bridges and streets that went down past the last of the light. The warring land had been monsters all the way through. The sunken world had monsters too — beautiful ones, patient ones, ones shaped like houses — but under all of it, it had something the last world never did.

’Somebody built that city,’ he thought, closing his hand around the disc. ’Somebody made this. And something down in the dark knows what happened to them.’ The engraving pressed cool lines into his palm, keeping every one of its secrets, and far away on the other side of the arch, the sea went on watching.
