Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The eye grew as Ren swam toward it, until at some point it stopped feeling like something he was approaching and started feeling more like the place he’d arrived at.

Ren slowed a body-length away and stayed there, treading dark water in front of a pupil wider than he was tall. This close, the eldest barely registered as an animal anymore; it was geography, a pale eye hanging before him like a moon behind glass, while somewhere beyond it a body the size of a drowned hillside breathed in slow tides that tugged at him with every rise and fall.

He didn’t say anything, because this really didn’t feel like the kind of conversation where he should be the one to start.

Then the eldest sang.

One note — low, long, rising slightly at the end — and Ren went completely still.

He knew that sound.

Not something similar to it, not another piece of the same song.

That exact sound.

The box.

For weeks, the sealed cube had been sending that same question through the stone and into his palm every time he pressed the disc against it, and every night Ren had answered with some version of I’m working on it. Now the same question had come out of a living throat large enough to swallow a house, aimed directly at him with the whole weight of the deep behind it.

The box hummed what the whales sang.

’Of course,’ Ren thought, heart beating a little faster. ’Of course you’re connected. Apparently one mystery at a time was too much to ask.’

But this time the question carried more than sound, or maybe Ren had simply spent long enough listening that he could finally hear the part underneath it. He wasn’t sure which, and honestly, he wasn’t going to pretend he understood whale communication after one month.

He only knew that when he looked into that huge pale eye, something came through with the note.

Grief, first — but not fresh grief, nothing sharp enough for that anymore. This was old, worn smooth by time like glass rolling around at the bottom of the sea until the edges stopped cutting.

There was patience beside it too, an honestly unreasonable amount of patience, and underneath both of them, held so carefully Ren almost missed it, was something else.

Hope.

Small compared with everything around it, maybe, but still there.

The note faded, though somehow the question remained hanging between them.

Ren still had no idea what the eldest was actually asking him; that part hadn’t changed. But he understood what it felt like to be asked, and he had the same answer he’d had since the first note landed in his bones.

He took a breath he didn’t need, then hummed back.

It was quiet, probably clumsy, and almost definitely embarrassing by whale standards, but it was his answer, and he meant it.

The eldest watched him for another long moment, then its eye slowly closed once, opened again, and the whale began to turn.

— • —

Watching something that large turn around took a while.

Its body moved past Ren like a coastline changing its mind, one enormous section after another passing through the dark until the eldest rolled enough to expose its flank to the thin light coming down from above.

That was when Ren saw the scars.

There were hundreds of them, maybe thousands, and most weren’t surprising. A creature this old had obviously collected history on its skin — old bites, ragged tears, deep gouges, and places where something in this sea had once decided to test the eldest and apparently hadn’t enjoyed how that decision ended.

Ren’s eyes moved over them, then stopped.

Low along the flank was a row of scars that didn’t look like the others.

Straight lines.

Long ones, evenly spaced, one after another.

They almost looked like—

Writing.

Ren floated closer, because nothing in nature made marks that straight by accident.

He didn’t say anything; some quiet part of his mind simply opened a drawer, put that fact inside, and closed it again.

Mystery number... whatever.

He’d lost count a while ago.

Then the eldest went completely still, not resting but waiting, and the whole impossible body seemed to gather around one point on its flank.

One of the straight scars opened.

Ren’s hand moved toward Heavenpiercer before his brain caught up, then stopped, because there was no tearing, no fresh wound, nothing being forced apart.

The old scar simply parted.

Quietly.

Like a door.

Blood came out, but not the way blood was supposed to come out.

There wasn’t a cloud spreading through the water; instead, a thin ribbon rose from the opening, deep red turning almost black in the blue, curling upward with far too much purpose for something that was supposed to just drift.

Ren stared at it for half a second, then looked down.

The disc was already in his hand.

He couldn’t remember taking it out.

’Right.’

Through the bond, Kaia had gone very quiet — not frightened, just careful, as if she understood whatever this was and had decided not to put a single finger on the moment.

The ribbon reached the disc, curled around it once, then again, and the engraved lines drank it.

Ren’s fingers tightened around the metal.

Blood sank into every carving from edge to edge, filling the channels dark red before clearing, then filling again, until finally the last thread disappeared and there wasn’t a drop left floating in the water.

A panel appeared.

[KEY COMPONENT: ACCEPTED.]

Ren stared at it.

Then the disc changed.

The warmth came first, and immediately he knew it wasn’t the borrowed warmth it picked up inside the covered district, because this didn’t feel like something the box had given it.

This warmth belonged to the disc.

Steady, blood-warm, almost like—

A pulse.

Then faint blue light appeared inside the engraved lines, deep enough to nearly disappear against the sea, the same blue the water turned where sunlight could still barely reach.

Another panel followed.

[THE KEY IS COMPLETE.]

Ren looked at the words, then at the disc, then back at the scar on the eldest’s side, which was already closing as if it had never opened.

Finally, he looked into the enormous eye waiting in the dark.

”I’ll take care of it,” he said.

He wasn’t entirely sure what it was yet, which made the promise slightly questionable, but it still felt like the right thing to say.

The eldest sang.

Then the rest of the sea answered.

Ren flinched, not because it hurt, but because suddenly there were too many voices for his mind to separate. Whales had gathered around them while he’d been busy staring at the disc, ring after ring of enormous bodies hanging in the dark, and every one of them joined the song.

This wasn’t the greeting, and it wasn’t the question either.

It was something else — slower, more formal, with grief carried through the low notes and something opening inside the higher ones.

A funeral and a permission at the same time.

Ren floated in the middle of it with the completed key in his hand, listening until one thing slowly became obvious.

This wasn’t about him.

Whatever was happening here had begun long before Ren had been born, probably long before his name was written anywhere useful on Edius, and he wasn’t the reason for any of it.

He was just the first person in a very long time who had been allowed to stand here while it happened.

That felt important enough.

— • —

The whales escorted him home.

There really wasn’t a less ridiculous way to describe it.

The eldest moved ahead while the rest of the pod settled around and above Ren, and he swam back toward the drowned city inside a procession of creatures large enough to qualify as terrain, their song rolling ahead through the water like a tide announcing itself.

Somewhere above the tower roads, Ren looked up at one enormous shadow passing overhead and thought, ’The whole sea is walking me home.’

Then another thought arrived.

’Yuelan would lose her mind.’

And, naturally:

’Cassian would ask if whales do weddings.’

Ren almost laughed into the water.

At the edge of the covered district, the procession stopped.

They couldn’t follow him inside; the drowned streets narrowed, stone roofs closed overhead, and the district simply hadn’t been built for visitors the size of small towns.

The whales didn’t try.

They gathered outside the boundary instead, huge shapes waiting patiently in the ordinary darkness beyond the pale district light, while Ren crossed the knife line alone.

His senses opened again, the light returned—

and the song followed him anyway.

Ren stopped.

Not through the water.

Through the city.

The notes were humming through the drowned buildings themselves — walls, streets, old towers — until the whole district seemed to catch the whales’ voices outside and carry them inward, stone answering sea like one enormous instrument.

Ren looked around.

”Of course you do that too.”

Nothing answered.

He kept walking, and the song followed him all the way down the lamplit avenue and into the cleared square.

The box waited exactly where it always did.

Dark, seamless, patient.

Ren stopped in front of it while the disc sat warm in his hand, its blue lines pulsing faintly once, then again.

”Okay,” he said quietly. ”You’ve been asking.”

He lifted the disc.

”Here’s the answer.”

He pressed it against the dark surface.

Nothing happened.

Ren waited.

Still nothing.

No question-note, no hum, no flash of light — nothing at all.

For something that had ignored him for a month and then spent weeks asking the same question every night, the silence felt almost deliberate.

Ren didn’t move.

The silence gathered around him, and that was the only way he could describe it; it felt like the box was holding a breath it shouldn’t have had.

Then—

a line appeared.

Ren’s eyes narrowed.

The box had no seams.

He knew that extremely well, considering he’d attacked the thing hard enough to make that fact personally offensive.

But now a hair-thin vertical line had appeared down its face, running from top to bottom, and pale light leaked through it.

Ren took one step back.

Outside the district, the sea erupted into song.

Every whale, every voice, all at once.

The sound poured through the drowned city hard enough to make the streets hum beneath Ren’s boots, and suddenly he understood at least one thing.

They had been waiting for this.

Not for a month, and definitely not just for however long Ren had been here.

Longer.

Much longer.

The seam widened.

The box began to open.
