Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Ren kept his hand flat on the low wall and breathed.

The pull was strong — stronger than it had ever been at night — and it had picked noon on the Terrace path to arrive, with the sun out, students crossing the yard below, and nothing between him and a hundred pairs of eyes except the fact that nobody had looked up yet.

’Not here.’

He didn’t fight it. Fighting it felt wrong, like slamming a door on family. He just held still, hand on the warm stone, and asked it to wait.

The blood pulled once more, hard.

Then it eased. Not gone. Waiting.

”Huh,” Ren said, to nobody.

He walked back the normal way, at the normal speed, and typed as he went. The Three had one rule that stood above the others — nothing that matters gets hidden — so the message was short and true: The blood again. I’m fine. It’s waiting for me. Tonight I’ll be at the tree.

Lyra answered first. ”We’ll be on the steps after. Only if you want company.”

Iris answered four seconds later. ”Noted. Eat first.”

He ate first. He waited until evening.

In his room, with the door locked, Ren sat on the edge of the bed, closed his eyes, and opened them in his own world — on the path through the grass, with the sea running silver in the distance and the Worldroot standing over everything, the great tree at the center of it all, the one he’d named himself.

The pull rose as he walked, and it wasn’t unpleasant anymore. It felt less like being dragged and more like being expected. Down by the shore, a few of the keepers lifted their heads as he passed, and let him be.

He sat in the grass between two roots and put his back against the bark.

”All right,” he said. ”Show me.”

Dark.

Not night. Night has a sky. This dark went on with nothing behind it — thick, still, old.

And through the dark: roots.

They came down from somewhere far above and ran into the black like cables into deep water, more of them than he could count, thicker than towers, and every one of them was holding.

He knew whose they were before he understood anything else. Not from the look of them. From the rhythm. The roots gripped and eased in a slow, steady time — tighten, ease, tighten — and Ren had seen that time once already, cut into a stone wall: lines of light that brightened and dimmed with one man’s heartbeat.

The same beat. The same heart.

The roots were his. He was holding down here too. He was holding everywhere.

Below it all, the roots wove together into a net, and the net was full.

Something pushed against it from the inside.

Not wild. Nothing about it was wild. It pushed in one place, waited a long time, and pushed in another. It wasn’t trying to break out. It was checking.

Checking, and hungry. Even through the memory Ren could feel that part. The hunger wasn’t loud. It was permanent.

Then the memory let him see how far down the dark went.

And the dark wasn’t empty.

There was a shape standing in it.

A tree.

A tree so big the dark ran out before it did. Its trunk went down past the bottom of the memory. Its crown went up until looking stopped meaning anything. And against it, the man’s roots — roots thicker than towers — looked like thread.

And Ren knew the shape.

He’d have known it anywhere, because a smaller, brighter one stood over his own grass, and he’d fallen asleep under it more nights than he could count.

A World Tree.

That was the part that fit nothing he knew. Trees like that grew inside worlds. They were the middle of something — grass, sea, sky, all of it growing outward around them.

This one stood in nothing. The dark around it wasn’t hiding a world.

The dark was all there was.

Where its heart should have been — the quiet middle every living tree grows around — there was nothing.

A hollow.

The dark inside that hollow was darker than all the dark around it, and it was the one part of the shape that moved.

It must have been beautiful once.

It couldn’t see him. This wasn’t now — this was the man’s memory, kept in blood, and everything in it had already happened. So Ren looked, as long as the memory let him, and made himself remember it right.

And at the edge of it all, far off where the memory went thin, there was one more thing.

Another tree. Small — small only next to that. It stood apart, outside the net, holding nothing. Just standing, close enough to see everything.

It wasn’t the man’s. The roots had a beat he knew. This had nothing he knew.

The dark thinned.

It didn’t throw him out. It let him go a little at a time, until the grass was under him again and the Worldroot’s bark was warm against his back, and his breathing was slow and even, like he’d woken from a good long sleep.

[SEQUENCE: 2 OF ? — COMPLETE.]

[CONTENT ANALYSIS: THE ROOTS ARE THE HOLDER’S. THE HELD THING HAS A SHAPE.]

He read the second panel twice.

”Yeah,” he said. ”I saw it.”

The notebook came out of his jacket — the cheap survey-kit notebook riding next to his Gold Surveyor plate, the one with Family ancestor written in it. He’d bought it for exactly this. He clicked the pencil out and wrote the second entry slow, in short lines, the same as the first:

— 2.

— Roots. The same man’s. They hold something in the dark.

— It pushes back. Patient. Hungry.

— Big. Bigger than the dark it stands in.

— There was another tree there. Not his.

— Whose?

It was the first question mark in the book.

He looked at it for a while. Yueying’s slip had already given the held thing a name, and the name had a root in it. He understood the name now. That wasn’t the line he kept looking at.

Then he closed the notebook, put it away, and didn’t ask the question out loud.

His world’s sky had gone to evening while he was under. The leaves above him held their soft light.

”I was there,” Kaia said.

Her voice was smaller than he’d ever heard it.

”That much I can say.”

Ren didn’t ask a single one of the questions lined up behind his teeth.

He put his palm flat against the bark and left it there.

His eyes closed.

The bark under his hand was warm, and the light in the leaves came down slow and gathered where he sat, the glow leaning into his palm like it had weight.

”Okay,” he said.

Neither of them said anything else for a long time.

He didn’t walk to the flower field where he slept most nights.

He settled deeper between the two roots instead, shoulder against the trunk, hand still on the bark, and let his eyes go heavy.

The slate chimed in his jacket.

He almost let it wait for morning. Then he saw the channel and sat up.

The family channel — the Guild’s slow, safe line between him and Edius. One letter.

He opened it just far enough to see the top of the page. Not to read it. He didn’t need to read it.

He knew the handwriting before he knew a single word.

His mother’s.
