Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Ren walked into breakfast, Lyra on one side, Iris on the other — and the Terrace figured it out in about four seconds.

Yuelan saw them walk in together. She studied their faces. She looked at how close they stood. She put her spoon down, very slowly.

”No,” she said. ”No. Say it.”

”Good morning,” Iris said, sitting down to grab the bread like it was any other day.

That was enough. Yuelan practically launched herself out of her chair, making a noise that wasn’t even a word.

Cassian’s voice cut through the shouting, tinny and sharp from the slate leaning against the fruit bowl. He was calling in from the treatment wing, stuck in bed, but sounding like a man who just hit the jackpot.

”Vesper,” he said. ”The notebook. Page forty-one.”

Vesper already had it open. Of course she did; she’d kept that page since the early days. It was a running tally the whole cohort added to back before the expedition, when everyone was still guessing who Ren would end up with. There was a column for Lyra. A column for Iris. And a third, labeled BOTH, with a question mark that had aged like fine wine.

”Read me the BOTH column,” Cassian demanded, sounding unbearable. ”Out loud. Whose name is in it?”

Vesper read it. There was only one name.

”Cassian,” she said.

”I called it,” Cassian crowed. ”From a hospital bed. One dinner. Weeks before it actually happened. I want that put on the permanent record.” Then his voice dropped, losing the bravado. ”Good. That’s good, you three. Really.”

Yueying stood, folded her hands, and bowed to them with genuine ceremony. ”Then I congratulate you,” she said. ”All three. Properly.” Somehow, she made it the warmest thing anyone said all morning.

Kaelen didn’t stand. He just looked at Ren across the table, held it for a second, and gave a nod that spoke for him. Then he went back to his food.

Underneath the noise, two small things happened, and Ren missed them both.

Vesper closed her notebook, holding it shut in her lap a beat too long, just looking at the cover. Then she smiled and jumped back into the chatter.

Eira had started to refill his cup, the way she always did without thinking. Instead, she set the pot down, found something else to do with her hands, and whispered her congratulations to the empty space past his shoulder.

The morning was way too loud and happy for anyone to notice. It just rolled on, taking everyone with it.

Ren was the one to pivot, and he did it all at once.

”Okay,” he said, once the noise dipped to breathe. ”You’re all here. And you’re all —” he gestured at the warm, chaotic mess of them ”— this. So there’s something I’ve been meaning to show you. Come see.”

They knew the shape of what he meant. Most had stepped into his inner world in the early days, back when it was just a young, empty place with one big tree and a lot of dirt. What they didn’t know was how much it had grown.

”Cassian gets his own,” Ren told the slate. ”When you’re out.”

”I had better,” Cassian said. ”And I want a full report from someone reliable. Not Yuelan.”

”HEY.”

Ren opened the door.

It wasn’t a real door; it was the one only he could open, the road into the world he carried inside. He reached out and pulled them through, one by one, while the others clung to him. Vesper and Eira walked in on their own, the way only bonded subjects could.

Then they were standing in his world, and everyone went quiet.

Where the empty ground used to hit a flat, boring horizon, there was an ocean now.

It stretched to the far edge of sight. Silver-blue under a soft sky, with islands strung across it and the great tree standing tall, pouring light down on the water. The air smelled like salt and green at the same time. Far out, something massive rolled just beneath the surface, pushing a slow swell toward the sand.

Yueying always had a way with words. She had nothing now. Kaelen never needed them, and he looked like he’d forgotten they existed. They just stood at the top of the beach, staring at an entire ocean that hadn’t been there last time. Neither of them said anything, because nothing they could think of was big enough.

”Second talent,” Ren said, beating them to the question. He kept it plain, just like Kaia coached him. ”It woke up out in the realm. It reaches out to worlds that died, way out in the deep, and brings home what’s left of them.” He looked at the water. ”This one was an ocean once. Now it lives here.”

That was it. No dressing it up, not one number. The others just took it in. Nobody pushed for more.

Iris looked at the sea for a long moment, then at him. He watched her line up a question. Then he watched her decide, on purpose, to swallow it. She knew him well enough to know when a door was shut for a reason. She left it shut.

”It’s beautiful,” she said. It was true. It was also kind. With Iris, those two didn’t always go together.

Then the sea noticed him, and the cohort got their first real hint that something bigger was going on.

It started small. The little fish in the shallows turned in unison, the whole school pointing the same way. Then the bigger shapes further out changed course — every single one — and headed for the beach. Not toward the eight strangers on the sand. Toward Ren. It was like the whole ocean had been waiting for him to arrive.

And then Ward came in.

The whale rose out of the deep about a hundred meters off the beach. And he just kept rising. A scarred, grey island stood up out of the water where open sea had been a second before. Water poured off his back in sheets. One huge eye found Ren on the sand, settling on him with something that looked a lot like worship, and the whale let out a low note that everyone felt in their back teeth.

The cohort had gone completely still.

”They’re friendly,” Ren said.

”Ren.” Lyra didn’t take her eyes off the whale. ”That is not what friendly looks like. That looks like a temple.”

”They’re very friendly,” Ren said, and left it there.

Lyra let it go. But he saw her tuck it away, carefully, in the same spot Iris had put her unasked question — just one more weird thing about him she wasn’t going to make him explain. His family had a lot of those by now. Not once had any of them pushed.

Mistwhisker took one look at the ocean and declared war on it.

The void-cat had arrived on Vesper’s shoulder at her normal house-cat size. She decided the huge wet thing was a challenge to her authority and stalked down to the water to handle it. She swatted a wave. The wave, being an ocean, swatted back. A second later, a very wet, very pissed-off cat came tearing back up the beach at hound-size, shaking water off with every step and glaring at Ren like the whole sea was his fault.

”She thinks you did that,” Vesper said, delighted, already scribbling in her book.

”I can tell.”

Mistwhisker sat down with her back to the ocean and her nose in the air, dripping and dignified, refusing to ever look at the water again.

Eira had wandered off the moment they arrived. Ren found her ankle-deep in the shallows by a bed of pale sea-plants, both hands in the water, glowing faintly green to her wrists. The plants turned toward her just like the fish had turned toward Ren. She looked up at him, her whole face lit from within.

”Ren,” she said. ”I could grow anything here. Anything. Do you understand what this is?” She looked back down at the little sea-garden curling around her fingers. ”I’m not leaving. You’ll have to make me.”

”Noted,” Ren said. He didn’t tell her he’d realized the same thing weeks ago — that a plant-world was meant for her. She was busy having the best morning of her life.

The rain started with zero warning.

The sky had been clear. Then a low, grey cloud rolled in off the sea, and it started to rain. His world had only ever rained once before, back at the beginning. This was time number two.

It moved up the beach and over the green rise, falling onto the flower field under the great tree. On his mother’s flowers. The first thing he’d ever grown here.

The whole loud family stopped talking at once.

They stood in his world and watched it rain on a field of flowers from a home most of them had never seen. Nobody tried to explain it. Yuelan went quiet. Lyra found his hand again without looking down. The rain fell soft, steady, and warm; the flowers drank it in; and for a little while, the only sound in the world was the water.

At the heart of the tree, something small and unseen stayed very still, the way it always did when strangers were in its home. But the rain kept falling anyway, soft and warm, right where it was needed.

He sent them home when it was over, one by one, back through the door — full of ocean, half-soaked, and already arguing about whose turn it was to come back first. Eira had to be asked twice.

Then the world was quiet, and it was just Ren on the shore, and the voice that lived there returned the moment they were gone.

”They’re good for you,” Kaia said, warm and sure, the teasing set aside. ”All of them.”

”Yeah,” Ren said. ”They are.”

He looked out at his sea. The keepers were still out there, all fifteen, and they were restless. He’d noticed it lately. He had a whole pod of guardians and a whole ocean, and nothing to guard it from. The world was finished settling. His fighters had nothing to fight.

It was time.

”Okay,” he said out loud, to the world and the tree and the sea. ”We’ve rested long enough. Find me the next one.”

Somewhere in the world, the search began. It reached out past the warm shore, toward the dark water beyond his borders, and started to look.

[FRAGMENT SEARCH: RUNNING.]

Out past the last island, the keepers felt it too, and turned as one toward the deep.
