Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The fourth memory had shown him one thing and then cut out, like a door left open just a hair. The wall, from the wrong side. The dark behind it. Him, looking out.

It had been waiting for him, patient as the others. Tonight, beneath the tree, he finally let it finish.

He sat between the roots, his back against the bark, and laid his hand flat on the wood.

”Okay,” he whispered. ”Show me.”

The dark rushed in, and this time, he was inside the man.

— • —

He knew the body now. He’d worn it twice — the hand against the stone, the room with the seam — and he knew the weight of it, the deep fatigue, the right shoulder that stayed locked. Aldric. This was the seal seen from the side only the holder ever saw: the wall up close, the lines of light pulsing like a heart doing the counting, the roots trailing down past where looking stopped meaning anything.

And it was old. This memory sat further back than the others — before the room with the seam had become a story, before the name Valis went quiet. Long before Ren. Long before Ren’s father, or his father, or anyone Ren had a name for.

The thing on the far side of the wall pushed, slow and steady, as it always had. Aldric held. That part Ren knew by heart.

What he didn’t know was that Aldric hadn’t been alone.

Someone else was there in the dark.

Ren felt it before he saw it — a warmth, off to one side, steady and close. The moment he felt it, his whole body went still, because he knew that warmth. He’d known it his whole second life. It was the warmth that lived in his own chest. It was the same one that had caught him every time he died, all seventeen of them, and set him down soft in a field of flowers. He would have known it in any dark, at the far end of any world.

Kaia.

She was here. She had been here, beside his ancestor, at the seal, before he was even born.

The memory showed her the only way it could: as a shape. A tree, small beside the great roots and the wall, standing a little apart. Not holding anything. Not part of the lock. Just there, close enough to see it all — standing near the tired man so he’d know he wasn’t doing it alone.

He’d suspected it since the second memory, since Kaia had said those four words beneath his own tree: I was there. But suspicion was one thing. Seeing her standing by Aldric in the dark was another.

Now the blood had gone and shown him anyway.

He watched as long as the memory let him. Aldric held the wall. Kaia stood beside him in the dark. Nothing was said, because the memory kept no words — only what a body did, and what it cost. But there was something in how the small tree stood close to the tired man, and Ren didn’t need to be told how to read it.

Then the memory moved, as it always did near the end, and when it came back, she was gone.

The place beside Aldric was empty. The man held the wall alone.

The memory didn’t show him how, or why, or where she went. It didn’t show her leaving. It showed only the after: a seal, a holder, and a space at his side where something warm used to stand. She had come from this. She had left it. That was all the blood had kept, and it kept it plainly, and then it let him go.

He came back to his own tree slowly, the sea running silver in the dark, the bark warm under his hand.

[SEQUENCE: 4 OF 5 — COMPLETE.]

Four. He read the number twice.

Four done — and, for the first time since these began, a floor under the count. One left. Whatever the blood had to give him, it was nearly over.

”You saw,” Kaia said.

Quietly. Not a question.

”Yeah,” Ren said.

”I’m still me.”

And there it was, underneath those three words — the thread he’d first felt in the flower field, the night of the Three. Something in her voice pulling tight for a second and then letting go, gone so fast he almost missed it. She didn’t seem to hear it in herself. But Ren heard it, and this time, he understood a little more of what it was.

It wasn’t that she was keeping something from him. He knew that shape too well — he kept things from the people he loved every day. This was the other thing. This was someone who wanted to say something and couldn’t, like a word held behind a door that wouldn’t open no matter which of them pushed on it.

Something was stopping her.

He didn’t ask what. He’d learned, from the inside of exactly this, that some doors you leave shut even with the people you love, and that leaning on a shut door only hurts whoever is standing behind it.

So he held it all, and said none of it out loud. That she’d stood in the dark beside a man holding the worst thing in the world, before Ren had a name or a face or a first life to lose. That she’d left it — the holder, the dark, whatever she’d been — and that somehow, centuries later, she’d ended up with a boy carrying the same blood, and stayed. And that there was something she wanted to give him and couldn’t, and that it cost her, quietly, all the time, and she carried it anyway so he’d never have to feel the weight of it.

He pressed his palm flat to the bark and left it there.

”I know,” he said.

The light in the leaves came down slow and gathered where he sat, leaning into his hand.

Neither of them said anything for a while.

Later, he took out the notebook.

He turned back a few pages, to the second entry, to the line he’d left open — the first question mark in the book. There was another tree there. Not his. And beneath it, alone: Whose?

He knew the answer now. He held the pencil over it.

Then he set it down without writing.

Some answers didn’t belong in a ledger. Not because he’d forget — he’d never forget — but because a notebook was a thing that could be found, and her name was the one secret that had been hers long before it was ever his. He drew a single line under the word Whose?, like a man closing a question he had finally settled, and left the rest of the page blank.

He wrote a short fourth entry instead, the plain way: the seal from the inside, and a tree that was there and then was not. No names. The surveyor kept his record. The rest he kept somewhere no record could reach.

— • —

He was nearly asleep against the trunk when the last one stirred.

He braced for it as he’d learned to — a room, a wall, a face, some piece of a life that wasn’t his, waiting on the other side of his own eyelids.

None came.

The fifth memory had no picture in it. Nothing to look at. Nothing to stand inside. It was only a pull — low, and certain, turning him the way a hand turns your face toward a sound you haven’t heard yet. Not toward a place he’d been.

Toward a place he hadn’t.

A direction.

The blood had one thing left to give him, and it wasn’t something to remember.

It was somewhere to go.
