Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

He read it there, tucked between the roots, his back against the bark and the tree’s soft light filtering down over his shoulder.

His mother’s handwriting filled the page, just as it always did—leaning, quick, and sure of itself. He could hear her voice in every line. That was the thing about her letters. They didn’t feel like writing at all; they sounded like her, sitting right there across from him, not letting him get a single word in.

Ren. I got your note. I have read it four times, so I want to be sure I’m quoting it right: ”Back safe. Long trip. More soon.” Three lines. Your father says it’s an improvement on the last one, and he’s right, which is the worst thing about your father.

Ren huffed, a quick breath through his nose.

”More soon,” you wrote. My darling boy. It has been long enough that I have started to suspect ”soon” is a length of time only you can see.

So here is your mother, writing first, again, because I have decided that waiting for details from you is a thing I will not survive.

He kept reading. She told him about the village — small, kind, and still convinced they were just retired herb farmers, which was still basically true. She said his father had built new growing beds, and had, once again, lost a war with Mrs. Petta’s goat. The goat had learned to open the shed latch. His father had changed the latch. The goat had learned that one, too. His father was now, in her words, losing to livestock on a technical level.

The polite young men across the lane still rent the house and still don’t watch over us. I told one of them last week that I was thinking of visiting you. He smiled and said that sounded lovely, then immediately dropped his cup. I have never felt more powerful.

Ren smiled at that. He knew exactly who those polite young men were. So did she. Neither of them would ever write it down.

Then, near the end, the letter slowed. Her writing always did that when she meant it most.

Now the part I actually wrote this letter for.

Back on Edius, before the transport, I asked you a question, and you paused — I felt that pause from across the room. I have thought about it more than a mother should admit. So I am asking again, in ink, where you cannot smile at me and change the subject:

Is there someone?

You do not have to tell me everything. You never do, and I made my peace with that a long time ago. But tell me this one true thing, if it is true. Let your old mother be happy about something she can picture.

Ren sat with the letter against his knee for a while, not reading, just holding it.

”You should answer that,” Kaia said, her voice gentle, only for him. ”She wrote first. Twice now.”

”I know.”

”You told an ocean you would take care of it.” A little warmth, a little edge. ”You can tell your mother two names.”

”I know,” he said again. ”I’m getting to it.”

When he came back out, Lyra and Iris were waiting on the Terrace steps, just like they said they would. He told them what the letter asked.

The answer took until the next evening.

— • —

He finally got to it the next evening, on the Terrace steps, with Lyra on one side of him and Iris on the other.

He’d told them what the letter asked. He didn’t need to explain why he wanted them there for the answer — that was the whole point of the Three — that some things you just didn’t do alone anymore.

He wrote the easy parts first.

He wrote about Cassian, leaving it at ”he’s getting better, slowly, and he’s still the funniest person I know,” which was true, though it left out the years of it. He wrote about the cohort. He wrote about the school, and the food, because his mother would want to hear about the food more than anything dangerous. He told her the food was good. He told her he was eating. He even meant it.

Then he reached the parts he couldn’t write, and his stylus stopped.

There were a lot of them.

He couldn’t write that he had died seventeen times and woken up each time in a field of her flowers. He couldn’t write about the thing sleeping in his blood, or the old man holding a door shut in the dark, or the name on Yueying’s archive slip. He couldn’t write about the seal, or the sea he carried inside him, or the voice in the tree that talked to him at night.

His mother slept badly enough already. He knew that from the letter — from a woman who wrote that she had thought about one pause more than a mother should admit, and then made a joke right after so he wouldn’t worry about the thinking.

So he left all of it out. Every true, heavy thing. He folded it away where it couldn’t reach her, and he wrote the small warm things instead, because the small warm things were also true, and they were the ones she could hold without lying awake.

That was the whole letter, in the end. Everything he put in was love. Everything he left out was love too.

The goat helped.

Tell Dad the goat keeps winning because he keeps arguing with it like it’s Alex. It’s a goat. Give it the corner of the shed and take the rest. It doesn’t even want the shed. It wants to beat him. Stop giving it the game.

He looked at that for a second, then added a line under it, smaller.

I miss arguing with him about things that don’t matter.

He didn’t cross it out. He left it there for his father to find.

Then there was one paragraph left, and it was the one she had written the whole letter for.

Ren looked at the empty space under his own handwriting for longer than he wanted to admit.

He had fought a Stage five in front of a full arena and found it easier than this.

”You’re overthinking it,” Iris said, without looking up from her own slate. ”You always do.”

”It’s a whole paragraph.”

”It’s three sentences,” Iris said. ”You already know all three. Write them in order.”

So he did.

You asked if there’s someone. There are two. Both real. We all three know about each other, and it works, and I’m happier than I know how to fit in a letter. Their names are Lyra and Iris.

He read it back once. It was plain, and it was true, and his mother respected plain and true more than anything else in the world.

He turned the slate over to Lyra.

— • —

Lyra took it and went quiet in a way she almost never did.

She wrote a line, looked at it, made a small face, and rubbed it out. She wrote another. Rubbed that one out too. On the third try her hand stopped over the slate, and Ren watched her give up on making it sound like anything and just say it.

Hi. I’m Lyra. I’m one of the two he means. He’s easy to love and hard to keep still long enough to feed, and I’m handling both. You don’t have to worry about that part.

She handed it back before she could change her mind, her cheeks a little pink.

Iris took the slate next. She read the whole thing from the top first — the easy parts, the goat, the three plain sentences, Lyra’s line — start to finish, the way she read everything before she touched it. Then she wrote a single sentence, smooth and even, no crossings-out, as if she had finished it in her head before the stylus moved.

I keep the plans, Lyra keeps the warmth, and Ren keeps his word, which means that between the three of us he is entirely accounted for, dinner included.

”Show-off,” Lyra muttered.

”You rewrote yours three times,” Iris said.

”That’s called caring.”

”So is punctuation.”

Ren read both of their lines twice, and something in his chest that had been holding since Edius let go a little.

He sent the letter.

— • —

The reply came back too fast.

He knew it the moment his slate chimed the next morning, because the timing was wrong. Edius was a galaxy away. Letters home crawled from station to station, slow and careful, and the answer to a letter he had sent the night before should not have been waiting in his channel when he woke.

Somebody had put a thumb on the scale. Somebody had reached down the whole long chain of relays and told them to hurry, just this once, for the Valis boy.

Ren had a short list of people who could do that, and a shorter list of people who would. He didn’t need to guess which one it was. He had stopped being surprised by the quiet things Halvern did.

He opened it.

His mother’s handwriting again, rushed this time, like she had answered the second she finished reading.

Two. TWO. Ren. I asked for one true thing and you sent me a whole family. I have read Lyra’s line and Iris’s line more times than I read your entire letter, which I hope embarrasses all three of you. Tell them thank you. Tell them I am already on their side.

Bring them both when it’s time. Both of them. I’ll set the extra places myself.

Under that, in a different hand — smaller, squarer, careful — his father had added a few lines of his own.

Proud of you. Your mother has been smiling since your letter came, which makes her insufferable, which means things are good here.

One more thing, and then I’ll leave you to your life.

I’ve been thinking about that old family puzzle again — the one with our name on it, the one we were never allowed to open. I don’t know why it’s back in my head. It’s probably nothing. It just stuck with me.

Your mother says I say that about everything that keeps me up at night. She’s usually right.

Ren read his father’s lines three times.

His father did not know what he was asking about. His father thought it was an old locked file with the family name on it — a curiosity from the deep section of a realm, on the far side of a dead comm call, a door that had never come open.

He did not know that his son fell asleep inside the answer to it every night, between two roots, with one hand on the bark.

Ren looked out over the Terrace, where the morning had come up ordinary and gold, students already crossing the yard below. Then he looked back at the words the one we were never allowed to open, and he did not write back yet, because he could not think of a single thing to say that wouldn’t be a lie or an open door.
