Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The Furnace Road — the first stamp.

The gate closed behind them and then it was not a gate anymore. It was a wall of red rock, the same as every other wall of red rock, and no amount of looking at it would make it open again. The Road only went one way.

Kaelen Voss looked at it for exactly as long as it deserved, which was one breath. Then he turned and started walking.

The Road was a road the way a blade is a knife — technically. One line of walkable stone ran down the middle of a canyon with no top to it, and on both sides the walls glowed. Not with fire. With heat, deep in the rock, the glow of iron left too long in a forge. The air above the walking line shivered. The air anywhere else killed.

And the heat kept time.

That was the first thing the Road taught, and it taught it for free. The heat came in surges — the walls brightened, the air came down like a hand pressing, and everything alive got low and small and still until it passed. Then a gap. Then the next surge. Brighten, press, pass, gap. Over and over, on a count.

Learn the count, and you walked in the gaps.

Miss the count, and the Road kept your writ.

A handful of applicants had come through the gate in his window. By the end of the first stretch they had already stopped talking. There was nothing to say that the count didn’t say better.

At the end of the stretch stood a way-station — a stone booth with no keeper and one slot. Kaelen fed his writ in. It came back with a mark burned into the corner, deep and neat.

The first stamp. The Road kept its own ledger.

He put the writ away and kept walking.

The Furnace Road — the second stamp.

The line was shorter now. Nobody counted out loud.

Nobody traded names either. He’d understood that without being told, the same as everyone else had. A name turned a shape ahead of you into a person, and the Road took shapes all the time. It was easier to lose a shape.

His method held. It had always held. Step, cut, recover — that was the whole of how Kaelen Voss fought and trained and lived, three beats, in order, every time. The Road had no argument with the first two. The stretches between stations were full of things that lived in the wall-glow — plate-backed beasts the color of cooling iron, low and patient — and step and cut worked on them the same as they worked on everything.

It was the third beat the Road had come to kill.

There was no recover here. No safe stretch, no camp, no hour where the walls went dark. The surges rolled on their count through the whole day and the whole night, and the count did not care what you had just fought or how much of yourself you’d spent fighting it.

So he re-learned rest, the only way the Road allowed.

He slept in the gaps. Flat in a hollow, blade under his hand, eyes shut on the pass of one surge and open before the press of the next — minutes at a time, counted, rationed, stacked like coins. It was not the sleep he’d known. It was maintenance. He did it with the same cold order he did everything, and it held, barely, like a bridge built for lighter carts.

Somewhere behind him, by now, the Guild had told his house where their heir had gone. The Road didn’t care about that.

Neither did he.

On the long stretch past the second station, in the middle of a surge, there was a sound from further back on the line. Not a scream. Just a sound, short, and then the press of the heat, and then the gap came and the road came back out of the shimmer — and there was a space in the line where a person had been walking.

Nobody went back. There was nothing to go back to.

The line moved. Kaelen moved with it, and did not think about the shape that was gone, and noticed that not thinking about it took effort now, and filed that away as one more cost the waiver hadn’t itemized.

The Furnace Road — the third stamp.

The narrow nearly ended him.

The road pinched down between two shoulders of glowing rock, a gap barely wide enough for one, and the pack was waiting in it. Six of the plate-backed beasts, low to the stone, the color of the walls — patient, because out here everything that survived was patient. They had a count of their own. They hunted in the gaps, the same gaps the applicants walked in.

There was no way around, no way back, and the next surge was coming on its schedule.

Step. Cut. The first beast came apart. Step. Cut. The second one’s plates turned his edge and its weight drove him into the rock wall, and the wall’s heat bit straight through the guard-cloth on his shoulder. He put his blade through its eye at a bad angle, dragged it free, and the count in his head said the surge was close now, close, and four of them still stood between him and the narrow’s end.

And then something in his blood answered.

He’d felt it once before, on a ridgeline on another world, for three exchanges — his output climbing past every measurement he had of himself, his strikes coming down heavier and cleaner than his own arms should have made them, like the air had picked a side.

It picked his side now.

Three exchanges. The third beast split along its plates. The fourth went down under a strike that cracked the stone beneath it. The last two broke and poured back into the glow of the walls, and Kaelen Voss stood alone in the narrow with the surge rolling in, and ran.

He made the shelter-hollow as the heat came down like a hand.

Then the bill arrived. His hands would not close.

Both of them. The fingers stood half-curled, shaking, spent past the bottom of whatever the surge had drawn on, and no order he gave them changed anything. He sat in the hollow with the press of the heat above him and looked at his own hands like damaged gear.

Then he worked the problem, because that was the whole of him.

The kit came out of his pack one-wristed. Eira’s kit — the spare, packed the night before the gate, every vial labeled in her small square writing, a list taped inside the lid. He read the list by wall-glow. Third line down, her letters even and sure: for overdrawn channels, the grey vial, half, no more.

He got the grey vial open with his teeth. Half, no more. The shaking eased from his fingers one joint at a time, not gone, but workable.

He pressed the list flat and re-taped it, so it would last the whole Road.

Then he took the strap off his pack and bound his blade to his right hand, because the hand couldn’t be trusted to hold it yet and the Road didn’t hand out waiting time. He counted the surge out. He stood in the gap.

’I said I’d catch up.’

The way-station at the end of the narrow took his writ and gave it back with a third mark burned in the corner, next to the other two, neat as a ledger line.

Ahead, the walls glowed on with no end in them anywhere.

He kept walking.
