Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The next few days just blurred into a string of jumps, and every single one of them ended at a graveyard.

Halvern showed them a system the First Trial had gutted — planets stripped down to bare rock by beast tides that had eaten every pulse of life, the orbits still filled with drifting shells and bones bleached by centuries of starlight. He showed them a Third Trial site, and that one was worse, the kind of horror Ren’s eyes just refused to register: a whole region of space hanging in jagged pieces, planets snapped like plates and frozen mid-shatter, the cracks between them still faintly bleeding light where the fabric of space had never managed to heal. He even showed them a system trapped under a red eclipse that never ended — the Fourth Trial’s work, every world beneath that bloody light now just a husk wrapped in a corruption older than any nation.

Ruin after ruin, one for every kind of storm. The group took it the way people handle a heavy weight — silently, and in their own ways. Yueying grew more formal at every stop, as if courtesy was the only container big enough to hold the reality of it all. Iris asked Halvern precise questions, scribbling the answers in perfect script with a hand that wasn’t quite steady. Kaelen said nothing at all, standing a little straighter with each site, while Lyra just started standing closer to Ren, almost without deciding to. Vesper kept Mistwhisker on her shoulder the entire time, and Eira — who spent her life healing things — looked at worlds that would never be healed and just grew very, very still.

Between the jumps, they learned to breathe again. Cassian kept them tethered to being human — ”Next field trip, I’m voting for a beach” — and Yuelan spent an entire transit without punching anyone’s shoulder, which coming from her was practically a funeral service. Even Halvern gave them space for the quiet, and Ren noticed that however hard the old man’s lessons were, he never once rushed them through the recovery.

’He’s not breaking us,’ Ren thought, watching the general watch them. ’He’s tempering us. There’s a difference, and he knows it exactly.’

And at night, in whatever quarters the stations gave them, Ren still clocked into the warring land and finished his shift — because grief was grief, but the fragment’s clock had dropped under a week, and that crown hidden under the glowing mountains wasn’t going to take itself.

Then came the final jump, and the universe suddenly changed its mood.

They stepped out of the light into a massive viewing bay, and the Crown Scholar System filled the glass — alive, busy, and shining. Ren’s first thought was that someone had taken a star system and actually organized it: moons ringed with training platforms, lanes of ships flowing in disciplined rivers, and sealed realm-gates hanging in orbit like jewelry laid out on black velvet. Traffic streamed in from every direction — ships of shapes he’d never seen, carrying students from more nations and worlds than Ren could name, all of it converging on the third world from the sun.

Dawnspire.

The planet sat in its orbit at an angle that shouldn’t have been stable, but the academy had clearly forced it that way, because its main continent rode the line between night and day — a permanent band of sunrise, gold and rose, wrapped around the world like a lit fuse that refused to burn down. On that glowing band, visible from space with the naked eye, stood the campus: a continent’s worth of walls, terraces, and towers, and at its center, one impossible spire rising out of the atmosphere itself, its peak catching hard starlight while its base stood in eternal dawn.

Nobody in the group said a word for a long time. It was Cassian who finally managed, faintly, ”That’s a school.”

”That’s a school,” Halvern agreed, with the smallest dry note of pride in his voice.

’Sovereign Dawn,’ Ren thought, staring at the gold band and the spire. ’It’s not a name. It’s a description.’

Kaia’s warmth rose in his chest like a plant turning toward the sun — she liked the dawn-band, liked it enormously, and made sure he felt it.

The descent gave them the views in stages, each one resetting the scale of the last.

From orbit: the continent-campus, walls running along mountain ranges like simple thread. From the high air: terraced districts the size of cities — training fields with their own weather, lakes set like mirrors, forests that were obviously faculties, and a river that fell off one terrace and turned to mist before it ever hit the next. From low over the rooftops: streets and plazas and gardens in that gold morning light that never moved, and people — students, thousands upon thousands of them, from worlds Ren couldn’t have found on any map he’d ever owned.

The transport finally touched down on a platform of white stone at the campus gate — and calling it a ”gate” was underselling it: two pillars of pale metal rose so high their tops were lost in the dawn haze, holding nothing between them but open air and a faint, heavy hum of authority. The ten of them came down the ramp into light that felt brand new and ancient at the same time, and a single figure was waiting for them at the base.

He looked about forty, built like a door, with a weathered, friendly face, a plain instructor’s coat worn open, and the unhurried stance of a man who had met a lot of student groups in his life. He raised one hand in an easy wave as they walked up.

”The Edius group. Welcome to Sovereign Dawn.” His voice sounded like warm gravel. ”Bram Holt — instructor, first-year logistics, and today, your ride. Bloodline Pathway, Stage Five — Ancestral Form — which the academy figures is about right for carrying luggage.” He said it with a completely straight face, and stuck out his hand.

Ren shook it, and did the math no one else could hear.

’Stage Five. Tier 2.’ On Edius, that was an elite — a qualitative existence, somebody with a wing named after them. Selene, the strongest teacher he’d ever had, had chosen to hold at Peak Seedling for eleven years, one stage below this man. Halvern aside, Ren could count the confirmed Tier 2s he’d met on his fingers. ’And here, he’s the pickup guy. This school sends a Tier 2 to walk first-years in from the gate.’

Around him, he could feel the others doing the same arithmetic at their own speeds — Yuelan’s eyebrows hitting her hairline, Cassian’s face going carefully neutral, Selene’s expression doing something complicated and professional. Instructor Holt watched the calculations land with the comfortable patience of a man who had seen them land on every group he’d ever met at this gate, and he just grinned.

”Yeah,” he said kindly. ”It’s that kind of school. You’ll adjust faster than you think.” Then his eyes found Selene, and he straightened a little, the ease turning into something more collegial. ”And you’d be Instructor Hart. Your posting came through two weeks back — first-year foundations, same wing as me. The department’s been looking forward to it; not many people get twenty-seven-in-a-year experience.” Selene took the handshake with her usual composure, but Ren caught the flicker anyway — the watcher who had followed her students across the stars, finding out she had a door here with her name already on it.

Holt picked up two of their cases in one hand, turned toward the pillars, and then paused, glancing back over his shoulder with a spark of real curiosity in his friendly eyes.

”Oh — fair warning, before you walk in there. The 147th Radiant Cup broadcast reached us months ago. Half the first-year faculty has been arguing about your cohort ever since, and the student body’s been arguing louder.” His gaze found Ren, easy and direct, and the grin widened by one tooth. ”And you’d be the champion. Your armor’s been waiting in the forge-hall, and so, I’d say, has everyone else.”

He walked on through the gate, carrying their heavy luggage into the eternal dawn.

The ten of them looked at each other — one long look that held a whole year inside it: the sealed classroom where seven strangers had met, the corruption zones, the Cup, the night the world ignited, the graves and the goodbyes, and the dead galaxy still cold behind their eyes. Then Yuelan cracked her knuckles, Cassian shouldered his pack, and they walked through the gate of Sovereign Dawn together, into a morning that never ended.
