Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The door opened before his knuckles landed a second time — but the first one out wasn’t Vesper.

A white shape shot through the gap, climbed him like a tree, and settled into his arms with all four paws and zero shame. Mistwhisker. The void-cat looked up with those violet eyes and pressed her head into his hand, demanding.

”Traitor,” Vesper said from the doorway. She was smiling, though, soft and a little tired, as she stepped aside. ”Come in.”

Ren sat at the small table while she put water on for tea. Mistwhisker refused to leave his lap, so he petted the white cat and let the room be quiet.

”I want to talk about something serious,” he said.

”Then we talk with tea.”

A few minutes passed, peaceful. She poured for him, then for herself, and sat down across the table.

”Okay,” she said. ”What is it?”

”The subject bond. You know what it is?”

”Roughly. Old sovereigns have them. Whole factions of them.”

”I want to offer it to you,” Ren said. ”You and Eira. You’re the only two here it can take.”

Vesper went very still. On his lap, Mistwhisker’s ears turned.

”Here’s the honest version,” Ren said. ”As my subject, my world feeds your cultivation. Faster growth, deeper recovery — and over time it raises your ceiling, not just your speed. And my World Talent—” He stopped. ”I can’t tell you what it is. I can tell you it will help my subjects more than anything else I could give.”

”And the price?” Vesper asked quietly. ”Things like this always have fine print.”

”They do. Some of it I only learned two days ago — the General’s ring had a jade slip inside. A sovereign’s knowledge, the kind that isn’t in any manual.”

That part was true. The System had cross-checked the slip line by line, and its own week-old summary — either party may sever at any time — had come back stamped:

[AMENDMENT ACCEPTED. PRIOR DATA: INCOMPLETE.]

”So here’s the fine print. All of it.” Ren counted on his fingers. ”One. You can leave whenever you want — with a catch. That freedom only holds if you haven’t crossed a major stage while bonded. Advance a stage on my world’s energy, and there’s no leaving after that. Ever. By then my aura is rooted too deep in your foundation — pulling it out would break you.”

Vesper didn’t look away. ”Two?”

”Two. You’ll never be able to speak about anything you see or learn about my talent, or anything connected to it. Not won’t — can’t. The bond seals it. The exit protects you. The seal protects me.”

”Three?”

”Once you’ve been my subject, no other BPL’s world can ever take you. Even if you leave.”

”And four?” she said. ”There’s always a four.”

”Four is about me.” Ren scratched Mistwhisker behind the ear. ”A sovereign who abuses his subjects damages his own foundation. The bond cages both directions. I can’t misuse you without breaking myself.”

Vesper looked down at her tea for a long moment. ”You’re listing reasons not to do it. That’s a strange way to sell something.”

”I’m not selling,” Ren said. ”If it happens, it happens with everything on the table. And there’s one more thing you should know. It’s called the Subject System — that’s its name, not mine. Anyone who takes this bond, I’m never treating like a subject. Partners. Family. That’s the actual offer.”

Kaia pulsed warm under the words, like she was signing them too.

He was looking at his tea when he said it, so he didn’t see the small blush cross Vesper’s face, or her ears going red.

She asked her questions after that — good ones, the kind she always asked. Whether the bond would touch Mistwhisker. (”The energy flows through everything that’s yours. She’d feel it too.”) Whether it changed her pathway. (”No. You grow as what you are — just faster, on better ground.”) Whether he’d already asked Eira. (”You first.”)

Then the quiet one. ”And if you die?”

”The bond severs clean,” Ren said. ”You keep every stage you built. You lose the acceleration, nothing else. Subjects survive their sovereign.”

Vesper nodded slowly. ”That was the question that mattered.”

When there was nothing left to ask, Vesper was quiet for a while. Then she said, in a voice softer than her usual one, ”I’ll tell you my answer. Soon.”

”Take all the time you want,” Ren said, lifting the cat off his lap. ”The door doesn’t close.”

Down the hall, Eira listened to the same offer with a notebook open — of course the notebook — and asked sharper questions: the exact timing of the stage-lock, the edges of the seal, whether the bond would touch her alchemy. Ren answered all of it straight.

”Define ’connected to it,’” Eira said at one point, pen still moving. ”The seal. Where’s the edge?”

”Anything the bond itself shows you,” Ren said. ”What my world is, what my talent does, what you see inside. Your own work stays yours — your formulas, your research, everything you build.”

”Hm.” She wrote that down too. ”And the stage-lock triggers at the breakthrough itself? Not at the threshold?”

”At the breakthrough. You could stand at ninety-nine percent and still walk away free.”

At the end she closed the notebook and said the same thing Vesper had, in different words. ”I’ll run it through my head and tell you.”

Two asked. Two answers pending.

Back in his room, Ren did the only useful thing there was to do while waiting.

He grafted.

The ring fed the world until the light outside went orange. More fire-class material into the east, where the warm ground was spreading. The freezing crystal’s smaller cousin into the north. A jar of storm-sand along the young coastline. And every world-material that carried a sleeping trace of law gave that trace up — all of it, every time, to him alone.

When he finally sat back, he opened the status.

[STATUS — REN VALIS. BLOODLINE PLANT LORD.]

[STAGE 5: WORLD CREATION — RESTORATION 45%.]

[FOUNDATION: 8,400 TONS. WORLD: 39.4 SQ MI. INTAKE EFFICIENCY: 59%.]

[LAWS: LIFE — 10.2% · DEATH — 10.8% · FIRE — 0.0019% · WATER — 0.0011% · EARTH — 0.0008% · AIR — 0.0006%]

[SUBJECT CAPACITY: 6. BONDED: 0. PENDING: 2.]

Six laws on one ledger. Two of them real, four of them rounding errors — for now. Planet Lord wanted five percent of each element, and yesterday he’d had none of them at all.

’Rounding errors grow,’ Ren thought. ’That’s kind of my whole thing.’

He picked up the next material.
