Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The revives reset with the morning. Ren stood at the arch before his breakfast — veil tight, defenses humming, two lives left in the bank, and a crater somewhere out there holding his answers.

The door had opinions again. It dumped him onto a slope of cracked shell, under a sky that looked grey and dirty, and he spun a slow circle — looking for the blast scar, the mile-wide wound that should have been impossible to miss. Nothing. Just mist. A different region. The crater and whatever was rotting inside would have to wait for better luck.

’Fine,’ he thought, picking the path that sloped down. ’Plan B — kill things, take their laws, get stronger. Some plans don’t need luck.’

The first local showed up twenty minutes in — a steady, grinding noise from behind a rock, like stone being chewed. He peeked around. A beetle the size of a dog was buried deep in the cliff, its head spinning like a drill, eating the wall in mouthfuls.

[SCAN: DRILLJAW BORER. LINE DENSITY: LOW-MODERATE. DANGER TO HOST: MODERATE.]

[IT EATS ROCK. THE HOST IS SOFTER THAN ROCK.]

”Thanks for the tip,” Ren muttered. The borer never heard him over its own drilling; one Heavenpiercer through the joint behind its head ended the meal, and the drill spun down, dying like a machine losing power. He shoved it into storage.

The hours drifted into a rhythm — walk, listen, scan, decide. This land had more life than the worker plains, and most of it wasn’t his to touch. A pair of things tall as houses went striding across the flats on legs like stilts, covering more ground in a step than he could in a sprint. The scan called them MISTSTRIDERS and marked their danger as HIGH, so he let them go. Later he crossed a stretch where the ground breathed — a slow, heavy pulse, once a minute, something massive sleeping just under the surface.

[SCAN INCOMPLETE: SPECIMEN MOSTLY BURIED. SIZE: LARGE. ESTIMATED DANGER: EXTREME.]

[RECOMMENDATION: CONTINUE BEING ELSEWHERE.]

Ren continued being elsewhere with genuine enthusiasm.

Not everything got a pass. At noon he found a scarab the size of a wagon, plates stacked on its back like shields, thick with carved lines — and he stopped, because HIGH was the wall that had ended him two days ago, and he needed to know if it was still a wall.

[SCAN: RIDGEBACK SCARAB. LINE DENSITY: HIGH. DANGER TO HOST: HIGH.]

No straight sprint this time. He took the high ground and opened with a Meteorfall — all his weight, dropped from above — and while the beast staggered, he swept a Stormsever low, shearing the footing from under it. It turned with that unfair, lightning speed the fragment loved. A foreleg clipped his shoulder, and Titanhide turned the strike into an ache instead of a break. He saw the rhythm then — charge, brace, sweep. So when it charged again, he stepped inside the sweep and drove the Heavenpiercer into the neck seam, up to the wrist.

The scarab fell like a cart losing its wheels. Ren stood over it, gasping, shoulder throbbing, but very much alive. Two days ago, HIGH was a wall; today, it was just a fight. The gap was shrinking.

[STORMSEVER ART: PROFICIENT → EXPERT.]

Half a day of real fighting had done what a week under the Worldroot wouldn’t — the arts grew fast when the practice bled. He stored the kill, rolled his shoulder, and kept moving.

— • —

The weirdest kill came in a hollow where he found two mantis-things, wings like smoked glass, locked together on a flat stone, completely, blissfully ignoring the world.

Ren stood there, feeling a weird, small twinge. Then he ignored it, because sentiment was for things that wouldn’t kill you if they could, and a distracted monster was a dead monster. One swing of the Heavenpiercer took both heads.

[DOUBLE KILL CONFIRMED.]

[THEY DIED DOING WHAT THEY LOVED.]

”You’re a jerk,” Ren told the System, storing the pair. It didn’t argue, so he kept moving down the slope, carrying his loot and a little bit of judgment.

It was past that hollow that the land got crowded.

Borers, small shelled things he couldn’t name, a miststrider pair way off on the flats, wandering knots of movement everywhere — the deeper he went, the thicker it got, more life in one stretch than he’d seen in the rest of the fragment. But they weren’t fighting. Different species drifted past each other without a look, all pointed the same way, like a crowd heading to a show. He wrapped the veil tight and followed.

From the rim of a massive basin, he finally saw why.

A tree stood in the middle of the dead world.

It rose from the center, tall as a tower and bare as winter — trunk, branches, crown, all the same dull grey as the rocks. From the rim, he couldn’t tell if it was stone turned to wood or wood turned to stone. Either way, it was the only tree he’d seen in this place — a whole world of death, and one single tree standing.

’What are you?’ he thought, and started down.

The closer he got, the weirder the crowd became. The basin was packed — hundreds of monsters, every kind he’d met and a dozen he hadn’t — and then, halfway down, it just stopped. A ring of bare dirt circled the tree, two hundred paces wide, and nothing crossed it. No monsters, no shells, no bones, not even a crack in the ground. The slope crowded against that line like a beach, and past it, the earth was smooth as a floor.

’Everything wants to be near it,’ Ren thought, ’and nothing goes in. That’s not caution — that’s a rule.’

He checked the veil, checked the armor, and stood at the line for a long time. Ten hours in the fragment; two lives in the bank; a good haul in storage. He had every reason to turn around and come back tomorrow with a plan.

He stepped over the line.

Nothing happened. The dirt was just dirt, quiet under his boots, and the tree grew bigger with every step — close enough to see the grain, though it caught the light like stone. Close enough to see the branches didn’t move in the wind. Close enough to almost—

Then the grass caught him.

— • —

No shape. No sound. No warning. One second his boot was hitting the dirt, and the next he was on his knees under the Worldroot, death number four hitting him like a wave.

He shook, the way he was getting used to, while Kaia’s warmth washed over him — worry worn thin, fear sharpening into something like anger. Four times she’d felt him die. ”I know,” he managed, hand on her root. ”I know. I’m sorry.”

[OUROBOROS: REVIVAL COMPLETE. REMAINING TODAY: 1.]

When his breathing steadied, he asked the only thing that mattered.

”What killed me?”

[CAUSE OF DEATH: UNKNOWN.]

Ren stared at the panel. The System had named every other death — the mantis, the shrimp, the soldier, measured down to the wound. ”You see everything I see. You see more. What hit me?”

[NO DATA.]

”Nothing? Between stepping over that line and the grass — nothing?”

[NO DATA.]

He sat back, letting the cold of it sink in. The mantis, he’d seen standing over his corpse. The shrimp, he’d heard — one crack, half a breath. This thing had ended him between two halves of a step, and it was so fast that even the System — the eye that read the whole world — had a blank space where the answer belonged. He hadn’t been beaten. He’d been deleted, and nothing had even bothered to show him how.

’Everything crowds the rim,’ he thought. ’Nothing crosses. They all know something I just paid a life to learn — and I still don’t have a clue.’

— • —

He worked anyway, because the loot wasn’t going to graft itself.

Nineteen kills went into the soil — the borers, the little wanderers, the glasswing pair, and finally the ridgeback scarab, its shields sinking into the grass like a ship going down. The payments hit exactly like the lines promised: borers paid better than workers, and the scarab paid better than all of them together.

[EARTH LAW: 0.0117% → 0.087%.]

[EARTH LAW REINFORCEMENT: ACTIVE. FOUNDATION DENSITY RISING WITH LEDGER.]

[FOUNDATION: 21,320 → 26,850 TONS.]

[WORLD GROWTH: +0.4 SQ MI.]

He felt the tonnage like he’d felt the threshold yesterday — not as power to throw, but as weight that had moved in for good: bones harder, frame heavier, grip closing with a strength that hadn’t been there at breakfast. The Earth law was building him like it built its monsters, layer by layer. The farm was paying better every day.

Which left the basin, the tree, and the ring of clean ground that everything obeyed but him.

”The bare ring,” he said to the air. ”The tree. What are they?”

[UNKNOWN.]

”You gave me a lecture on fragments last week. Guess.”

[UNKNOWN.]

He was deciding whether to push his luck when one more panel arrived — unasked, in the same flat, cold letters.

[RECOMMENDATION: DO NOT RETURN.]
