Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The morning they left Edius, they went straight to the medical ward. Not the gate.

Caelan Veyr was exactly where he’d been for weeks — clean sheets, silent arrays humming, and that Stage Six healer keeping her endless vigil. Even in a coma, the principal looked way too elegant, like a young master just deciding to nap through something boring. But he was too still — a man that sharp was never this still.

The ten of them filed in, luggage long gone, and one by one, they said thank you to a guy who couldn’t hear a word.

Yuelan said it loud; that was just her. Cassian was quiet, leaving his hand on the bed rail a heartbeat too long. Iris kept it short and precise, meaning way more than she actually said, while Lyra stayed soft. Yueying went full Azure court style, placing every word like a stone. Kaelen — who’d showed up that morning with his bags and a blunt ”House Voss changed its plans,” rejoining them like he’d never left — stood at the foot of the bed for a bit, then finally spoke: ”You knew about my family’s lie. You let me find it at my own speed. Thank you for that.”

Then, without anyone planning it, they just bowed. All of them, together, to a sleeping man.

Ren went last, lingering after the others backed away.

”I was angry with you,” he said, voice low. ”For a long time. Some of the things you did, some of the things you let happen — I carried that around and I was angry.” He looked at that still face, the faint rise and fall of breath the healer and the Alliance’s best elixirs kept steady. ”I know now. You were protecting us in your own ways. All of them. I don’t have to like every one of those ways to know what they cost you.” He stood up straight. ”Wake up, and I’ll say it properly.”

The machines hummed; the healer didn’t look up, but her mouth twitched — a tiny ghost of approval — and the ten of them walked out of the ward toward the stars.

The gate hall under the Rose Country hub was nothing like Ren imagined, and he’d seen real teleportation before.

The Explorer Guild’s transfer center had been cool — carved circles, shielded platforms, ancient script glowing over modern metal, some big enough for full teams. This hall made the guild’s setup look like a waiting room. Three rings of different metals, each wide as a plaza, turned slowly inside one another like a clock the size of a lake — and that was the first difference, since every circle he’d stood on before had been flat and still. The second difference was the script: the guild’s inscriptions were just carved on top, but this stuff went deep into the metal, like wells, glowing faintly from underneath. The air above the rings stood in a column of pale light that didn’t flicker, and the hum lived in Ren’s teeth instead of his ears. Dozens of Alliance crew moved around it with the calm of people working next to a sleeping giant.

”Impressive, isn’t it,” Halvern said, sounding like a guy who’d stopped seeing it years ago. ”It’s also a crutch. Understand that now, before the wider universe teaches it to you the hard way: with enough law, none of this is needed. A cultivator with deep enough comprehension of Space steps from one star to another like you’d step over a puddle. Circles like this exist because almost nobody ever climbs that high — so we spend metal, decades, and a river of resources to fake what one person with enough Space law does for free.”

’Space law,’ Ren thought, feeling that tiny fraction of a percent sitting in his ledger like a seed in winter. ’Noted. Not-yet drawer.’

They stepped onto the innermost ring, and Halvern dropped one more thing, casual as anything.

”We’re not going straight to Sovereign Dawn. There’s something you need to see first.”

Nobody had time to ask — the rings turned, the light crashed down, and Edius folded away like a page.

The jump felt like holding your breath — one long, cold moment of being nowhere — and then the world snapped back into metal corridors and filtered air.

A station — an Alliance station hanging in space, full of grey halls, sealed doors, and soldiers whose salutes to Halvern were sharp enough to cut. He led them down one corridor after another without a word until a final set of doors slid open to a long, dim gallery with a massive window for a wall.

And the ten of them stopped.

Beyond the glass was a galaxy — it filled the window like an ocean, arms of stars sweeping across the dark, close enough to read as one vast, slow wheel. It should’ve been beautiful, and maybe it was once, but now the light came through all wrong: stars burning the color of old bruises, whole reaches of space stained with grey-black veils drifting in no wind, and here and there, the small dark shapes of worlds with nothing left. Husks. Hundreds of them.

Nobody said a word; Cassian started counting the dead worlds like he counted everything else, and Ren watched him stop.

”This galaxy was alive,” Halvern said. He didn’t raise his voice; he just stood there with his hands behind his back, delivering it plainly, like a ledger. ”Thousands of worlds, many of them ours. You all know where humanity started: one world — Edius. We spread from that cradle, settled world after world, and built the space era you were born into, and the worlds out there were part of that spread — children of Edius, grown into empires. We were strong here, advanced, proud of both, and we’d earned that pride.” He paused. ”But we can’t always protect everything. A Trial came here. Not the edge of one. The thing itself.”

He let the window speak for a second.

”Hundreds of trillions of lives,” he said. ”That’s not a number I rounded for effect; it’s the closest count the Alliance ever got, and it’s low.”

Ren heard someone’s breath hitch — he honestly couldn’t have said whose, and it might’ve been his own. Beside him, Lyra had gone pale and still; Yuelan’s usual grin was gone; Vesper held Mistwhisker so tight the cat stopped pretending she didn’t care. Selene wasn’t even looking at the window — she was watching her students take the weight, like a teacher watching an exam she couldn’t help with.

”What you call the Trials at home,” Halvern continued, ”the four your planet survived, the ones in your textbooks — those were just the spray of the storm, not the wave. No Trial has ever appeared directly over Edius. You all know the rhythm — one Trial every fifty years, the schedule every classroom teaches. What they don’t teach is the other half: the timing is known, but the place never is. Each Trial arrives somewhere in the plane — anywhere — and no one knows where the wave lands until it’s there. This galaxy found out the hard way. And none of that is told to civilians, for reasons you’re feeling in your stomachs right now.” He turned from the window at last. ”And this galaxy is only one of the places. Not the only one.”

Quietly, behind Ren’s eyes where no one could hear, he asked the System the only question he had.

’The stain out there. Does it match the Ashblight energy?’

[NO. THE SIGNATURES DO NOT MATCH.]

’Of course not,’ he thought, cold. ’Why would the universe only have two kinds of poison.’

It was Iris who finally spoke, her voice as level as she could manage. ”Why show us this, General? We’re students. We haven’t even started.”

”Because of what you’ll become,” Halvern said. ”Sovereign Dawn will make you strong — stronger than you can currently imagine, some of you.” His eyes didn’t single anyone out, which somehow made it worse. ”And strength without aim is just weight. So before your first class, I wanted you to stand here and see what humanity is actually against. What surviving has cost us. What was sacrificed by people whose names no one will ever know, so that planets like yours could hold their little Trials at the edges and live.” He looked back at the dead wheel of stars, and for one moment, the ledger-voice carried something older and heavier underneath. ”You all grew up with the date — the Fifth Trial, fifty years out, plenty of time. I will tell you what I have told very few people: the last Trial is nearer than most think. The clock the plane trusts is running fast. And when it comes — wherever it comes — it will be met by whoever is strong enough to stand in front of it. I am showing you the bill, children, so you understand what you are training to pay for.”

The gallery was silent as ten students from a small green planet stood at the window of a dead galaxy, letting the size of the war they’d been born into settle onto their shoulders — not to crush them, Ren realized, but to aim them.

He looked out at the bruised stars and the drifting husks, and somewhere under the grief, in the place where he kept the things that made him keep going, something hardened into shape.

’Understood, old man,’ he thought. ’Show me the bill. I’ll grow into someone who can pay it.’
