Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Day two in the warring land. Ren came back with both lives, a healed dignity, and a new playbook — and the land, like it wanted to welcome him, showed him something new: weather.

Grey flakes drifted out of the ash sky, soft as snow, and settled on the black rock until everything went pale and quiet. Ashfall. He understood the gift within minutes — the skyrazors were gone. The flocks couldn’t ride the choked air, so they grounded somewhere to wait, and for the first time since he’d stepped through the arch, the sky was empty.

’Storm hours are work hours,’ he thought, watching the flakes descend. ’The one time this place gets safer instead of worse.’

So the playbook grew. Move low and under when the sky was clear; hunt hard and fast when the ash came down; work the battle edges, loot the dead, kill the limping winners, and never — never — stand where the tide could reach. It worked. For the first time since Insectoid World 1 opened its doors, he put together a full day with zero deaths, then another.

The deeper ground, closer to the glowing mountains, was where the week got interesting.

He met the new problem on the fourth day — a low brown cloud drifting across the rock against the wind, dense as smoke, but moving with a purpose smoke shouldn’t have. He scanned it from cover, and the scan was weird.

[SCAN: ASHMOTE SWARM. MANY BODIES. ONE MIND.]

[PHYSICAL PRECISION: USELESS. DANGER TO HOST: HIGH.]

He learned what USELESS meant the hard way, though for once it wasn’t the fatal way. The cloud found a wounded cinderwheel and ate it — poured over it and stripped it to shell in under a minute — and when it drifted toward his hollow, he met it with a Heavenpiercer through its center, which did exactly as much as stabbing fog. The hole closed. The cloud didn’t even slow. Then it was on him, a thousand gnat-sized shell-motes chewing at the Titanhide like living sandpaper, and he did the only smart thing left: he spun the Stormsever in a full circle at Master-grade width and burned the cloud down layer by layer until whatever thought for it stopped thinking.

Precision was a luxury of the outer area. Down here, area was law. He fought three more swarms that week, each faster than the last, and somewhere in the middle of the third one the System put a stamp on the lesson.

[STORMSEVER ART: EXPERT → MASTER.]

The swarms paid for the trouble, too. Grafting the first one home produced a panel he’d half expected and still grinned at.

[DUST LAW DETECTED — SUB-LAW OF EARTH.]

[EXTRACTION: EARTH +MAJOR SHARE · AIR +MINOR SHARE.]

Lava under Fire, metal under Earth, dust under Earth with a pinch of wind. The family tree of laws kept growing branches, and every branch fed his ledger.

In the middle of the week, he went back to the ring.

He told himself it was due. He’d nearly doubled since the last visit — tons, arts, laws, all of it — and a gap you never re-measured was a gap you’d given up on. The arch put him on the basin’s rim, and everything was exactly as he’d left it: the crowd of monsters pressed against the invisible line like a shore, the grey tree standing tall and bare in the middle, the ring of clean dirt that nothing crossed. The one peaceful place in a world at war.

He crossed the line, and got three steps.

Grass.

[CAUSE OF DEATH: UNKNOWN.]

[NO DATA.]

[THE RECOMMENDATION STANDS.]

Death number ten. He lay under the Worldroot and didn’t even shake much this time — the pain came and went like a bill he’d already budgeted. That was the coldest part, when he thought about it after: everything he’d gained in a week of grinding, the tons, the Master art, the new laws — and the result was identical down to the step count. Whatever guarded the tree wasn’t a wall he was slowly climbing. It was a ceiling he couldn’t touch, and it would stay one until he was somebody else entirely. Kaia’s warmth checked him over without a flicker of surprise, which somehow said the same thing.

’Fine,’ he thought at the ceiling of branches. ’Not yet still means not yet. But I’m keeping the receipt.’

The outside week moved too, in quieter ways.

Halvern’s word came through the grey card twice. The first time was business — final departure logistics, the escort roster, the armor waiting at Sovereign Dawn. The second time wasn’t business at all: three hours, a location that didn’t exist, no records, no escort inside the room. His mother’s grip, his father’s hand on his shoulder, and everything that got said in that little hidden house stayed there, between the three of them, where it belonged. He came back lighter and heavier at the same time, and didn’t go into the fragment at all that day.

And on the fifth evening, after he’d doored everyone out at dusk, Lyra didn’t leave.

She stood in the annex corridor with her hands folded, steady the way she was always steady, and said, ”You owe me a conversation. I’m collecting.”

Ren’s stomach did something complicated. ”Okay.”

She didn’t make him talk. She just looked at him — calm, warm, completely unhurried, like they had all the time the departure clock said they didn’t — and started.

”I know what you are, Ren. Not the secrets — I stopped counting doors a long time ago. The weight. I’ve watched you carry all of it, all year, alone, and I’ve watched you decide, every single time, to put yourself between it and us. And somewhere in the middle of all that watching, I fell in love with you. I have been for a while now.”

The corridor went very quiet. Ren — who had died ten times, faced down generals, and lit himself on fire on purpose — stood there with his ears going red and discovered that two lifetimes of experience contained exactly nothing about this moment. Nobody had ever said that to him. Not in this life. Not in the one before it. He opened his mouth, and she shook her head, gently.

”You don’t have to say anything back. I didn’t come here for an answer — not tonight. Tonight everything sounds like goodbye, and I don’t want a goodbye answer.” A small smile. ”When we’re at Sovereign Dawn, when it’s true and not just leaving — tell me then.”

She paused, and for the first time her voice had a small careful edge in it, like a person stepping somewhere narrow. ”And I’m not blind. I know I won’t be the only one. I’ve watched Iris look at you for half a year, and I’ve watched you notice absolutely nothing, which is honestly its own kind of talent. I’m not asking to be the only one. I just want one thing.”

”...What thing?” His voice came out rougher than he meant.

”Whatever part of you ends up being mine,” she said, ”let it be mine always. That’s all. Don’t hand it to me and take it back.”

She didn’t wait for a reply — that was the whole design of it. She touched his sleeve once, said good night the same way she said everything, evenly, like the world wasn’t tilting, and walked away down the corridor, composed as a queen leaving her own court. Ren stood exactly where she’d left him for a long moment, rebooting.

Inside his chest, warm and deep and utterly merciless, Kaia was laughing at him.

”Not one word,” he muttered, and went to bed with his ears still burning.

The last days went by the way last days do — too fast, and full of boxes.

The cohort’s valley sessions ran to the final morning; the East Annex slowly emptied into luggage; Orien got that strange thin feeling of a place already becoming a memory while you were still standing in it. And every day, ash or clear, Ren clocked into the warring land and did his shift, because the ledger didn’t take holidays. By the last evening, the week’s work read like this:

[STATUS: REN VALIS — STAGE FIVE, WORLD CREATION. TIER 2.]

[FOUNDATION: 42,300 TONS.]

[LAWS: LIFE 10.2% · DEATH 10.8% · EARTH 1.21% · FIRE 0.68% · AIR 0.09% · OTHERS: 0.02%–0.04%.]

[SKILLS: ALL COMBAT ARTS EXPERT OR ABOVE. STORMSEVER — MASTER. HEAVENPIERCER — MASTER. LAST PYRE — MASTER.]

[WORLD: 331.4 SQ MI.]

Forty-two thousand tons. Earth past one percent. A body the outer area’s soldiers couldn’t dent anymore, and an arsenal with no weak slots left in it. The farm had made him rich, and the farm wasn’t finished — but the calendar was.

On the eve of departure he stood in his packed, bare room, then stepped into his world one last time before sleep and walked north to the arch. Through the grey light, far off, the mountains glowed along their seams — and somewhere under them, wearing a dead world’s heart inside its body, the apex was still waiting to be met.

”Tomorrow the stars,” he told the door with his name on the lock. ”But I’m not done with you.”

The panel came quietly, and it followed him all the way into sleep.

[FRAGMENT DISSOLUTION: 10 DAYS REMAINING.]
