Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Seven days passed, and they settled into the weirdest routine of Ren’s life.

Every morning, the cohort huddled at the East Annex — everyone, even Selene — and Ren opened the door of himself to bring them through. That gift from the world tour turned into a ritual: his world’s air was just better than any Alliance chamber, and with departure looming, nobody wanted to waste a single day. He gave them a green valley two ridges south of the Worldroot, close enough to feel the richness, far enough that no one would see what the grass caught. He said it was for privacy. It was, mostly, the truth.

They stuck to the deal better than he thought they would. After day one, they left him alone — he doored them in at sunrise, they cultivated, he walked north to the arch for work; at dusk he doored them out, and if they wondered where the master of the world spent his time, they already knew better than to ask.

The first day was the exception. They treated it like moving in — Yuelan claimed a flat boulder, Cassian paced the ridgeline like a guy checking property values, and Eira walked the grass with her hands out, looking like she was praying to the botany. Selene just stood at the edge for a while, reading the horizon like a book, and said only one thing before settling down: ”Whatever you’re doing with your days, Valis, it’s putting weight on you. Good weight. I won’t ask.”

”I know you won’t,” Ren said, and meant it.

Vesper and Eira came and went — subjects didn’t need a door — and Kaia spent the week just happy, her warmth humming through every root of a world that was, for once, actually full of people.

On day three, Halvern’s note came through the grey card, along with the second Alliance shipment — crates of everything, fire to ice, the same all-of-everything spread as the compensation ring.

Two weeks. The cohort had two weeks until Sovereign Dawn.

The news landed like rain on dry ground — half relief, half panic, everyone counting down. Eighteen months off-world; parents to see; a home to leave. Ren counted his own days, privately: the fragment’s month was a third gone, and the gate would open with ten days left on the clock. His world traveled with him — the hunt wouldn’t care what star system he was in — but he’d really rather not be fighting whatever wore the crown while riding an Alliance convoy through three relays.

’Two weeks,’ he thought. ’Better move faster.’

So he moved faster, and the week taught him a lot — mostly the hard way.

The wins came first. Killing borers became a boring routine: listen for the grinding, walk up behind it, one stroke, into storage. He dropped a miststrider off a ridge with a Meteorfall to the knee, and learned the huge things were mostly leg — the fall finished it before he could. On the fifth day, with two lives banked and his arts sharper, he finally hunted the one enemy he owed: a soldier, the same type of ant that ended him on day three.

The fight went his way from the start. The Stormsever cut its front legs at the ankles — the art hit wider at Expert — the Meteorfall caught its horn while it stumbled, and the Heavenpiercer went through the neck seam, just like last time. But this time, the soldier went down and stayed down. Ren stood over three tons of dead ant, his arm throbbing to the shoulder, and just enjoyed it.

[SPECIMEN STORED: ASHPLATE ANT — SOLDIER.]

[LAW CONTENT: EARTH — DENSITY: 9× WORKER GRADE.]

Nine times a worker’s payment, from one body. The most dangerous thing in this land was also the best-paying.

The deaths happened, too, because of course they did. The big one was just greed: the day after the soldier, he tried a patrol pair. He dropped the first one — but the second didn’t wait its turn. It hit him from the side before he could turn, and the grass caught him again. One revival gone, one lesson learned: on the deep ground, soldiers hunt in pairs.

The other two deaths, he was taking to his grave.

On day two he sat on a boulder to eat, and the boulder objected. He didn’t even feel the bite — just the world spinning, then grass.

[CAUSE OF DEATH: GEOLOGY.]

”We talked about this,” Ren croaked at the sky, shaking off the pain with his dignity somewhere back in the fragment with his lunch. The System didn’t care. Two days later he was on his stomach stalking a fat borer, fully veiled, master of the unseen — and a miststrider that didn’t even know he existed stepped on him.

[CAUSE OF DEATH: STEPPED ON.]

Kaia stopped being scared by mid-week. Her warmth met each return with the flat, tired patience of a nurse on a double shift, checked him over, and went back to the guests. That was somehow worse than the anger.

’Seven deaths,’ Ren thought on the last evening, lying in the grass while his heart restarted. ’Four to monsters, one to a chair, one to a pedestrian, and one to seafood. If the Alliance writes my biography, I’m editing it first.’

The ledger didn’t care how he died, only what he brought home, and by the seventh evening the week’s haul was buried in the soil — workers by the dozen, borers, the miststrider, the cousins of the glasswing pair, and one ashplate soldier that paid like a bank. He pulled the status panel when the last body sank.

[STATUS: REN VALIS — STAGE FIVE, WORLD CREATION. TIER 2.]

[FOUNDATION: 34,700 TONS.]

[LAWS: LIFE 10.2% · DEATH 10.8% · EARTH 0.52% · SEVEN OTHERS: 0.02%–0.04% EACH.]

[PASSIVE: FOUNDATION HARDENING — DEEPENED. PHYSICAL DEFENSE RISES WITH THE EARTH LEDGER.]

[WORLD: 329.6 SQ MI.]

[SKILLS UPDATED: GHOSTVEIL — EXPERT. TITANHIDE — EXPERT.]

Half a percent of Earth, from nothing three weeks ago — the ants fed one ledger, and the shipment’s variety fed the rest, dragging the other elements past the wield floor: thin, but on the board. Nearly thirty-five thousand tons. The passive went from a surprise to a quiet fact of his body — stone-dense bone, skin that turned a worker’s pincer without the Titanhide. The farm worked. It worked so well it was starting to feel less like hunting and more like a job.

He was reaching for the arch on the eighth morning when the chime changed.

[DING.]

[FRAGMENT SURVEY: 50% COMPLETE.]

[SUFFICIENT TERRITORY MAPPED. PASSAGE UPGRADED.]

[TARGETED TRANSPORT AVAILABLE: ANY PREVIOUSLY VISITED LOCATION.]

[NEW REGION AVAILABLE: THE INNER AREA — BETWEEN THE OUTER SHELL AND THE CORE.]

Ren stood before the grey arch and read the panels twice, because half of them changed everything. Targeted transport. The dice were done — every place he’d stood was one step away, and the list scrolled through his head: the worker plains. The scarab country. The basin, the grey tree, the ring he was told to avoid. The plain where he’d lit a one-second sun, with a crater he’d never really seen, and an answer sitting at the bottom.

And below it all, a region he’d never touched — the inner area, the deep country between the outer shell and whatever sat at the core. The colony’s heart was down there. So was the apex, wearing a dead world’s heart inside its body.

The tree could wait. The crater could wait — a hole in the ground wasn’t going anywhere. He had two weeks, two lives a day, and a crown to take.

”Inner,” he said.

The arch dimmed, swallowed the word, and rebuilt the view: darker mist, heavier air, and a boulder that made his skin prickle. It had lines. Not a monster — the rock itself was carved edge to edge in the same thin script the ants wore, like even the ground down here was woven.

Ren pulled the veil tight, checked his two lives, and stepped through.
