Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Ren stared at the guy’s back. He was the strongest person Ren had ever stood near.

The pressure coming off him was unreal. Way more than Selene. More than Theron. More than the lady in the coat at the Cup. He was at least Stage Seven — a Tier Three, the kind of person who decides if a nation survives or gets wiped out. And he was standing there, bowing to a Stage 5 student in a hospital ward.

Ren started to say something, but he stopped. The guy stood up before Ren could get a word out.

”Again, I’m sorry,” he said. ”I know you have questions. Let me earn the right to answer them. I’m Osric Halvern. Second Seat of the Alliance High Command.”

Selene went totally still beside him.

Ren didn’t know the exact makeup of the Alliance’s leadership. He didn’t need to. In a place that ruled an entire planet, ”second” wasn’t just a number. It was a massive amount of power, standing in a med-bay, apologizing to a kid.

”Your principal,” Halvern said, looking at the bed, ”is like this because he fought something we didn’t think existed. A newly advanced Stage Seven. Tier Three.”

The words took a second to sink in. They didn’t feel right. Ren looked at the wreck of a body under the lights, then back at the General. ”Caelan is—”

”Stage Six. Brushing Seven on his best day.” Halvern’s voice was totally steady. ”The gap between them wasn’t a gap. It was a cliff. And here’s the part that should keep all of us awake: the enemy wasn’t even using full strength. We don’t know why. We think the foundation was so new it hadn’t stabilized yet. Even holding back, it was enough to wipe out any Tier Two on this planet.”

He watched Caelan for a long beat.

”Your principal knew that when he went to meet it. He kept it away from the school with his life on the line. If it reached these grounds while you guys were pinned by the hybrids, nothing would have lived. He fought a cliff, for hours. When the campus fighting stopped and the thing felt me coming, it left.” He paused. ”If I’d been one hour later, you’d be standing at a grave, not a bed.”

Ren kept looking at the bed. The healer kept moving.

”She’s Stage Six,” Halvern said, noticing Ren looking. ”A Plant-pathway healing specialist. I brought her myself, with the best elixirs the Alliance has. With all that, your principal is just hanging on to life. Hanging on. Not winning.”

”Why are you telling me this?” Ren asked quietly. ”The truth. All of it. The Alliance doesn’t do that.”

”No,” Halvern agreed. ”We don’t. That’s part of the apology.” He put his hands behind his back, looking less like a general and more like a tired old man. ”You deserve to know why this happened, and the reason is ugly. Arrogance. Ours. There were signs before the attack. We saw them and decided they couldn’t be real, because in our books, nothing the enemy had could be more than Tier Two. For thousands of years the Alliance has grown, and somewhere in there we stopped looking down. Threats became just paperwork.”

”And it gets worse. They knew our security. Rotations, ward schedules, response windows. Knowledge like that doesn’t leak by accident. There’s a mole inside the Alliance. Not at the very top, but high up. We don’t know who yet.”

The room went quiet. The ward-light seemed to hum lower.

”Orien wasn’t the only target,” Halvern continued. ”You know six sites were hit. What you weren’t told is the cost. Three of the Twenty-Seven are dead.”

Ren’s stomach twisted.

”One more — a girl your age, from the Crimson Empire — is in their hands. Alive, we think. Not recovered yet.” His jaw tightened, the first crack in that calm mask. ”Twenty-four of you are left. So when I bow, know I’m not just performing. Three kids died under our watch. I hold the Second Seat of the group that let it happen.”

”Now,” Halvern said, ”what we’re doing about it.”

He listed it off, plain, like a guy reading a ledger.

”The investigation is mine. I’m running it, and I will find the mole. Until you cross to Sovereign Dawn, a Tier Three will follow you — you specifically. The academy is locked down; stronger people than me are watching. I moved your parents myself. Their location is in no database, no report, and in no mind except mine and the two guards. A mole can’t leak what was never written. And more healers come tomorrow — your classmates will recover.”

”Except one,” Ren said.

”Cassian Rook.” Halvern nodded. ”The boy who burned his channels out for his teammate. You think it’s permanent.”

”It is. The diagnostics—”

”The diagnostics were written by people who haven’t treated our pathway at this level.” Halvern held Ren’s gaze. ”You might not know this yet, so hear it from an old one. I’m a Bloodline Plant Lord. Peak of Stage Seven.”

Ren froze.

”Our pathway doesn’t end at burned channels,” the General said. ”The seed lives, and where the seed lives, the road can be built again. With the right treatment, the right operations, and resources most nations can’t afford — which the Alliance has — his channels can grow back. The void taint will make it slow and ugly. But he will cultivate again. I promise — on my seat and my name.”

Ren breathed out.

”I understand,” he said. ”Thanks for the truth.”

And he did understand. He knew exactly what this was: the strongest guy he’d ever met, standing in a room, trying to stack guarantees around a fire that had already burned everything down. Their arrogance had been the problem. And everyone else had paid the bill — Caelan on the bed, three kids who were dead, a girl in a cell somewhere.

’And what can I do about any of it?’ he thought. ’Nothing. Not yet.’ He was a student with a half-built world. Even with two laws, even at Stage Five — a rough, unfinished Stage Five — he wasn’t enough. The thought didn’t crush him. It just went on the list, under the only heading that mattered: ’get strong enough that no one’s arrogance can ever bill my people again.’

As for the guarantee — Ren looked at the man’s face and filed it where he filed everything the Alliance said now. ’Words. Until I see it.’ A season ago he would have believed. But there was a mole, three of the Twenty-Seven were dead, and the strongest group on the planet had just spent ten minutes explaining how wrong they were. Cassian’s road wouldn’t be fixed by a promise. His own gut feeling — ’not never, just not yet’ — was still what he trusted.

He didn’t ask about his great-grandfather, either. The question had been there since the Cup, and standing in front of the one man who could probably answer it, Ren let it go. He didn’t need them for it. The bloodline was waking up. He could feel it, patient and old, older than the Alliance’s files. Whatever answers were coming from there would be way better than anything this organization could hand him.

That was the real change, and it had nothing to do with the bow. He didn’t disbelieve Halvern — the sorrow was real, the numbers were real, maybe the guarantees were real. But somewhere between the mole and the graves, something in Ren had finished breaking. He would take the Alliance’s protection. He would take its healers, its resources, its Tier Three shadow.

He would never take their word for anything again.

Selene walked him back through the halls. For a while, they didn’t say anything. The med bay faded, and the night wards made pale lines across the floor.

”You kept your face neutral in there,” she said.

”Thanks.”

”You didn’t believe him.”

It wasn’t a question. Ren looked at her. ”Did you?”

Selene was quiet for a few steps. ”I believed he was sad. The rest? I’ll check it myself.” A beat. ”Which brings me to two things.”

She stopped and turned to him.

”One. I’m coming with you. I asked for the post the day the invite arrived, and it was approved this morning. Whatever Sovereign Dawn is, you’re not walking into it alone.”

Something in Ren’s chest loosened. He hadn’t realized how much he’d been planning to do this without her.

”Two.” Her voice dropped, exact and sharp, the way it went when she was serious. ”I stopped assuming the Alliance saw everything a long time ago. After tonight, I don’t even think they’re looking the right way. So from now on, we keep our own watch. You, me, the cohort. Quietly. We use their protection and we trust our own eyes.”

Ren looked at his teacher — the watcher who’d become a mentor, the mentor who’d just drawn a line with the Alliance on the other side — and nodded.

”Then we watch,” he said.

”We watch,” Selene agreed.

They kept walking. Behind them, in a warded room, the Second Seat of the Alliance stood watch over the one who’d nearly died keeping a cliff away from a school. And ahead — past the healing, past the gate, past the stars — twenty-four remained, a mole waited, and something old was waking up in Ren’s blood.

’Fine,’ he thought. ’We watch. And I grow.’
