Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The inner area hit him with heat first — then with noise.

The heat was the honest kind; black rock underfoot, red light breathing out of cracks in the ground, and far off to the east a line of mountains with glowing seams down their sides. The noise was stranger: war, everywhere, in every direction. Shrieks and impacts and the grinding of shell on shell rolled in from at least four different battles he couldn’t see, all mixed together. In the outer area, the land had been silent as a grave. Down here, the grave was having a riot.

And under his boots, exactly as the arch had promised, the ground was carved. Thin lines ran through the rock in every direction — the same script the ants wore on their armor, written across whole hillsides, as if somebody had woven law into the land itself and then walked away.

He climbed the nearest ridge, wrapped in the Ghostveil, and looked down at the first battle of his day.

Two species he had no names for were killing each other in a shallow basin — no territory he could see, no food, no reason. On one side, things like rings of dark shell rolling on their own bodies, molten light leaking between their plates as they crushed whatever they rolled across. On the other, low six-legged slabs with polished, mirror-bright backs that caught the red light and threw it. They fought like they’d been hired for it — no retreat, no fear, no point.

[SCAN: CINDERWHEEL. LAVA LAW — SUB-LAW OF FIRE. DANGER TO HOST: MODERATE-HIGH.]

[SCAN: MIRRORBACK. METAL LAW — SUB-LAW OF EARTH. DANGER TO HOST: HIGH.]

Sub-laws. That was new twice over — new laws, and the idea that laws had children. Lava sitting under Fire, metal sitting under Earth. He filed it next to the other new fact the scans kept repeating: the weakest thing he’d pointed the scan at down here read MODERATE. The inner area’s floor was the outer area’s middle, and the ceiling was somewhere he couldn’t see yet.

’Everyone fights, nobody runs,’ he thought, watching a cinderwheel roll straight through a mirrorback’s guard and die on the next one’s back. ’What is wrong with this place?’

He’d get his answer by evening. First, he went to work — because a land where everything killed everything had one beautiful feature, and it was lying all over the ground.

— • —

Corpses. The warring land was carpeted with them, and nothing scavenged; everything with legs was too busy fighting to eat the dead. For a ghost with a storage ring, it wasn’t a battlefield — it was a warehouse with bad security.

So the day’s rhythm wrote itself. Find a battle by ear, come in veiled from the flank, and work the edges: loot the fresh dead, drag what fit into storage, and when a winner limped away from its kill bleeding and half-blind with rage, give it a Heavenpiercer through the back of the head as a retirement gift. Sneak, stab, store, move. He took a mirrorback that way — its metal plates were tough enough to turn his first thrust, so the second went in through the soft joint under its jaw — and two cinderwheels, and a dozen dead things off the ground, including one fat borer that had wandered down from the outer area and deeply regretted it.

The sky was the complication. Flocks of flyers wheeled over every battle — kite-shaped things with no heads he could find, wings curved like blades, riding the hot air in slow circles and dropping like thrown knives on anything that moved alone. The scan named them SKYRAZORS and rated the flock, not the bird. The first time a flock broke toward his ridge, he learned the local custom fast: down. Under. He spent a quarter hour wedged into a crack in the rock with his face against warm stone while blade-wings combed the air overhead, and after that he moved from cover to cover like a man crossing a prison yard, one eye always up. The land belonged to the war; the sky belonged to the razors; the ghost belonged underground.

It was working. It was all working beautifully, right up until the bathroom break.

The thing was the size of a barn, and it was the first calm creature he’d seen in the whole inner area — a huge, slow, round-backed grazer with legs like bridge columns, standing at a lava pool and drinking from it, peaceful as a cow at a trough. The scan called it a MAGMAWALKER and its danger LOW-CONDITIONAL, which he read as harmless if you don’t bother it. He had no intention of bothering it. He was only nearby because three fresh corpses were lying in its shadow, and free money was free money.

He was crouched over the second corpse when the magmawalker shifted its weight, lifted one column of a leg, and — without noticing him, without meaning anything by it, with the total innocence of a very large animal doing a very normal thing — relieved itself.

The world went orange.

Then grass.

[CAUSE OF DEATH: LAVA. SOURCE: BIOLOGICAL.]

Ren lay under the Worldroot, shaking through death number eight, and stared at the panel while the pain faded and the full meaning arrived in stages. ”No,” he said. ”No, no. Tell me that thing did not—”

[ORDINARY LAVA CANNOT HARM THE HOST’S CURRENT BODY.]

[THAT WAS NOT ORDINARY LAVA.]

[IT CARRIED LAVA LAW. THE HOST WAS, IN EFFECT, STRUCK BY A TECHNIQUE.]

”It was not a technique. It was—” He pressed both palms into his eyes. Thirty-four thousand tons of foundation, stone-dense bone, skin that turned pincers, a body that could stand in a normal volcano and file complaints about the temperature — and a grazing animal had ended him by accident, mid-stream, without ever learning he existed. Kaia’s warmth checked him over with the tired efficiency of a nurse on a double shift, found nothing wrong except his dignity, and went back to the guests.

’One to a chair, one to a pedestrian, one to seafood,’ he thought, staring up through the branches. ’And now one to a bathroom break. If anyone ever reads my biography, I’m dying for real.’

The upgrade proved its worth ten minutes later: he told the arch where, and it put him back on the same ridge — twenty polite paces from where he’d died, with the magmawalker still drinking peacefully below. First targeted return. No dice, no new region, no starting over. He gave the big grazer the widest possible berth, reclaimed nothing from its shadow on principle, and went back to work with one life left and a new personal rule about parking near anything’s hindquarters.

The afternoon paid better than the morning. Two more mirrorbacks into storage, another cinderwheel, corpses beyond counting — and greed, as usual, kept the bill for the end of the day.

He found the richest field yet an hour before he meant to leave: a three-way battle ground where cinderwheels, mirrorbacks, and something like walking coral towers had been killing each other since at least midday, dead stacked on dead. He worked the edge of it, veiled, quick, filling storage like a man robbing a bank during the robbery — and the tide turned. Not toward him; over him. The coral things broke and ran his way, the wheels rolled after them, the mirrorbacks flanked, and suddenly the edge of the battle was the middle of it, and he was standing in the road.

The veil didn’t fail. It just stopped mattering. Something rolled across the rock where he was crouched and he had to move or be crushed — and the moment he moved, blood-marked and mid-leap between two dying coral towers, the frenzy stopped caring what it could or couldn’t sense. He killed the first wheel that came at him, and the second, and put a Stormsever through a knot of mirrorbacks that got their flank; for about ten seconds it was almost going somewhere. Then the sky noticed the new shape in the brawl, and the razors came down like blades off a wall, and the numbers did what numbers do.

He didn’t even get a clean last thought. Just shell in every direction, the sky full of falling knives, and—

Grass.

[CAUSE OF DEATH: OVERWHELMED. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS: 31.]

”Thirty-one,” Ren said to the branches, flat on his back, voice scraped raw. ”You counted.”

[THE SYSTEM IS THOROUGH.]

Death number nine, and the day’s second lesson, paid in full: in the warring land, a fight was a broadcast. Every kill was an invitation, every noise an address, and the war would always, always accept. Hunt like a ghost, leave like a ghost — and never, ever stand anywhere the tide could reach.

Zero lives left meant the day was over, so he spent the evening the productive way — feeding the haul to the soil and reading the receipts.

The sub-laws paid exactly as advertised. The cinderwheels and their dead cousins went in, and the panels showed lava splitting its payment like a good accountant.

[LAVA LAW DETECTED — SUB-LAW OF FIRE.]

[EXTRACTION: FIRE +MAJOR SHARE · EARTH +MINOR SHARE · AIR +TRACE.]

[METAL LAW DETECTED — SUB-LAW OF EARTH.]

[EXTRACTION: EARTH — CONCENTRATED.]

[LEDGER UPDATED: EARTH 0.52% → 0.63% · FIRE 0.03% → 0.14% · AIR: +TRACE.]

The inner monsters carried more law than the outer ones — not wildly more, the System was careful to note; payment still followed strength, and a MODERATE was a MODERATE wherever it lived. But the floor down here was higher, the corpses were free, and somewhere in the eastern hills of his world a low black mound rose out of the grass as the lava-law settled in — warm to the touch, the first warm stone his world had ever grown. Ren rested his hand on it for a while and decided he liked it.

Then he asked the question the whole day had been building, because he’d watched species that had never met fight to the death over nothing, in a land where nothing scavenged and nothing fled and nothing ever seemed to stop.

”Why do they fight like that? All of them. All day. What’s wrong with this place?”

The panels came without a pause this time, and they came like a doctor naming a disease.

[THE WAR IS A SYMPTOM.]

[ASHBLIGHT MADDENS WHAT IT SOAKS. THE LONGER THE SOAK, THE DEEPER THE MADNESS.]

[THE OUTER SPECIES CARRY TRACES. THE INNER SPECIES ARE SOAKED THROUGH.]

[THE HOST’S WORLD FILTERS ASHBLIGHT FROM EVERY GRAFT. THE HOST’S SOIL IS CLEAN.]

Ren read the panels twice, and the whole day made a new kind of sense. The constant killing, the fights with no reason, the corpses nothing would eat — none of it was nature. It was poison, soaked into every living thing down here, winding them tighter the deeper it went. The ants of the outer area, with their traces, were the calm ones. The soaked-through things down here had been at war their whole lives, because the war lived inside them.

And one cold thought followed the others in: in this entire fragment, he had seen exactly one place where nothing fought at all — a basin where a hundred species stood shoulder to shoulder in peace, around a grey tree, at the edge of a clean bare ring.

He didn’t know what that meant yet. He filed it in the deep drawer, next to everything else about that place.

”The Ashblight,” he said. ”How far does it go?”

[CONCENTRATION RISES TOWARD THE CORE.]

[AT THE CORE: UNKNOWN.]
