Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The arch could wait one more hour.

Ren had been halfway to the northern edge when he stopped. If he was about to start disappearing into a dead world for days, the supply line had to come first. A month isn’t long, and hunting on an empty pipeline is how people end up rationing miracles. He stepped back into his room, dug out the plain grey card General Halvern had left him after their first meeting, and dialed the number.

It picked up on the second ring.

”Valis.” The General’s voice sounded just like it did in person — level, unhurried, like he was impossible to surprise.

”General. I need to talk to you. Somewhere private — properly private.”

There was a pause, and Ren could have sworn the old man was smiling.

”I have the perfect place,” Halvern said. ”Don’t resist.”

Ren’s room folded away.

He arrived standing on a path of white gravel, and for a few seconds, he just stared.

A garden stretched in every direction — not a courtyard, but a garden the way a country is a country. Terraced beds climbed the slopes in clean lines, streams ran silver and dead straight, and trees older than nations stood in rows so exact they looked drawn with a ruler. The air was rich enough to drink, but it felt hollow; every current of energy moved where it was told, calm and heavy and perfect. Ren’s world felt like a flood, but this place? It felt like a library.

”My inner world,” Halvern said, standing nearby in that same grey coat, hands behind his back. ”You asked for private. There are no walls here but mine; nothing in the Alliance — nothing on the planet — listens in on this place.”

Ren closed his mouth. Two realizations hit him, and he took them one by one.

First: confirmation. He’d known what Halvern was, the way you know a number on a page — peak of Stage Seven, one of only a handful alive. Standing inside the man’s world made that number real in a way no file ever had. This place was vast, old, and finished; it was the work of a lifetime measured in centuries.

Second: the pull. Ren had been in his room, Halvern had been wherever generals go during a working day, and the distance between them had meant exactly nothing. Yesterday, Ren had stood in front of his friends, explaining his shiny new rule — inside my sensing range, I can pull you through — and he’d felt clever. Today, the finished version of that rule had picked him up mid-sentence, from across the city, like a hand grabbing a cup. He’d even used Ren’s own words to do it. Don’t resist.

’Peak Stage Seven,’ Ren thought. ’Good to know how far the road goes.’

”You’re not showing me this to be hospitable,” Ren said.

”No,” Halvern agreed. ”I’m showing you so you understand that whatever you say next stays here. Say it.”

So Ren said it.

He gave him the shape of it — the same shape he’d given his friends under the Worldroot, nothing more. His World Talent was called Endless Graft. His world could take in rare, law-bearing material — plants, ores, beast cores, anything with a soul in it — and make it part of itself, permanently. The world grew from every graft, and it didn’t stop. It had formed at twelve broken square miles. It was three hundred and twenty-seven now.

Halvern stopped walking. He was quiet for a moment, looking down one of his ruler-straight streams.

”Four and a half months,” he said.

”Yes.”

”The largest first formation in recorded history was eighty. You understand what you’re describing.”

”I’m not describing it to brag,” Ren said. ”I’m describing it because it’s hungry. I’ve already fed it everything I could reach — every realm trip, every windfall, months of it. I’ve stripped my own reach clean. If it’s going to keep growing, I need a supply line. Steady, quiet, and sourced by people who can find what I can’t.” He looked at the General. ”That’s the ask. The Alliance feeds my world.”

”And in exchange?” Ren added, because he’d rehearsed this part on the walk to nowhere. ”Name it. Materials grown back from my soil, my time, my—”

”Nothing,” Halvern said.

Ren stopped. ”Nothing?”

”There’s no price.” The General turned to face him fully, and his voice didn’t change, which somehow made it heavier. ”You’ll get your pipeline. Send me your categories and quantities tonight; the first shipment moves this week. What I want from you is one thing, and it isn’t payment — prove it at Sovereign Dawn. Stand on that stage and show them what you’ve been showing me in pieces since the day we met.” He paused. ”Every generation, the Alliance spends fortunes on ordinary talents and gets ordinary results. Then once in a very long while something like you walks in — the cultivation speed no record can explain, the miracles stacked like they’re normal — and asks, politely, to be fed.” A dry look crossed his face, almost a smile. ”When a miracle asks to be fed, boy, you feed it. That’s not charity. That’s the best investment this Alliance will make in a centuries.”

”And,” he added, quieter, turning back to his garden, ”the last Trial is nearer than most people think.”

That one hit different. Everyone on Edius grew up knowing the Trials — four survived, the Fifth still to come, the planet’s final exam, drilled into every classroom and every broadcast, always with the same comfort: there’s still time. Hearing a general say otherwise, in a place where no one could be listening, was something else entirely. ”How near?” Ren asked.

”Sovereign Dawn first,” Halvern said, in the tone of a door closing. ”Send me your list.”

The garden folded away before Ren could push, which he suspected was the point, and his own dull little room came back. He stood there a second, then huffed out a laugh. He’d walked in braced to bargain and walked out with everything, for free — plus a peak Stage Seven general telling him, off the record, that the clock the whole planet trusted was running fast.

’Nearer than most people think.’ That wasn’t a history lesson; that was a leak. He filed it away, but he didn’t like how neatly it sat next to everything else the Alliance was suddenly willing to pay for.

Then he wrote up the list — categories, grades, quantities that would make a quartermaster sweat — and sent it.

An hour later, he stood at the northern edge of his world, in front of the grey arch.

Through it, blurred like deep water, the dead land waited — brown shell-ridged ground, ash sky, nothing moving. One month on the clock. Two lives a day. The house was settled, the pipeline was inbound, and every excuse was used up.

Kaia pressed a worried pulse down the bond from the Worldroot, and he sent back something steady. This first look he’d take alone — that’s what the insurance was for.

”Right,” Ren said to the door with his name on the lock. ”Let’s meet the neighbors.”

He stepped through.

The air on the other side was dry and dead-still, thick with a smell like old chitin and dust, and the ground under his boots was ridged shell as far as he could see. For one long moment, nothing in the whole grey world moved.

Then, far out across the plain, something began to chitter — and something much bigger answered it.

Insectoid World 1 had noticed its first visitor.
