Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Ren pulled himself off the grass under the Worldroot, the shakes of death number three fading out and just one revival left in the bank — and he wasn’t done yet; the soldier had taught him a lesson that stung, but there were still hours left in the day, and he intended to put them to work.

The realm could sit there for a minute, though: before he headed back through the arch, he wanted to know what he’d actually been killing, and the fourteen dead workers sitting in his storage were waiting to be asked.

Under the Worldroot, he pulled out the first carcass and set it on the grass, saber pincers and all. Up close, without the rush, the thin lines across its shell didn’t look like scratches or patterns — they were too regular for one, too deep for the other; they looked like writing he couldn’t read.

’Let’s see what you’re made of,’ he said, and fed it to the world.

The ground took the ant the way it took everything — quiet, the carcass sinking like it had always been part of the dirt — and the panels hit his vision before the grass even closed over the spot.

[GRAFT ACCEPTED: ASHPLATE ANT — WORKER.]

[MATERIAL CLASS: FOREIGN — LAW-WOVEN SHELL.]

[NO CULTIVATION DETECTED.]

[EARTH LAW DETECTED. EXTRACTION: COMPLETE.]

And then, before he could even frame the question, the System gave him the answers.

[ANALYSIS UPDATED: FRAGMENT SPECIMENS DO NOT GATHER ENERGY. THEY DO NOT CLIMB A STAGE LADDER.]

[THEY WEAVE LAW DIRECTLY INTO THE BODY. THE LINES ARE THE WEAVE.]

[MORE LINES: DEEPER WEAVE. DEEPER WEAVE: STRONGER SPECIMEN.]

[NO CULTIVATION EXISTS TO MEASURE. HENCE: ?]

[COMBAT NOTE: THE SPECIMENS DO NOT USE ENERGY ATTACKS. ONLY PHYSICAL ONES.]

Ren sat back on his heels to let that soak in. So the scan hadn’t been failing — it had been dead right: these things had no cultivation to read because they’d never touched a drop of energy in their lives; their whole world had skipped the ladder and gone straight to weaving law into meat and armor. That was why his attacks kept skidding off, and that was the mantis and the shrimp explained in one go — pure body, pure speed, nothing to read and nothing to sense coming.

’And the lines are a power meter,’ he thought, turning a second carcass over to count them. ’Written right on the armor — they’ve been telling me who’s dangerous this whole time.’

He fed the rest in, one after another, watching the math that made him the luckiest cultivator alive do its quiet work — full extraction, every time, fourteen full payments where anyone else would’ve gotten a fraction of one — and he was around the ninth ant when the chime changed.

[DING. SPECIAL ENERGY SIGNATURE DETECTED WITHIN SPECIMENS.]

[ANALYZING...]

And the System stopped.

Two seconds, three — and the back of his neck prickled, because he could count on one finger the times the System had ever paused, and that time it was only deciding how to insult his naming sense. Kaia’s warmth sharpened in the trunk behind him, watchful. Then the panels came, and they felt careful.

[DETECTED: HIGH-GRADE BLIGHT-CLASS ENERGY.]

[DATABASE: SIMILAR SIGNATURES ON RECORD. EXACT MATCH: NONE.]

[NOT EDIUS CORRUPTION. RELATED FAMILY. ORIGIN: UNKNOWN.]

[DESIGNATION: ASHBLIGHT.]

[CONTENT IN SPECIMENS: TRACE. INERT. FILTERED FROM GRAFT.]

Ren read them twice, and the grey world across the arch got a little colder in his head: corruption’s cousin, soaked into everything living there, old and faint enough to be part of them. His world had filtered it out of the graft — good — but the question underneath wouldn’t go away: their homeworld was dead, snapped apart, dissolving in the dark. Maybe it just died, or maybe something with a name like Ashblight killed it.

’Later,’ he told the question, not really believing himself. ’Mystery later.’

The ledger, though, had nothing complicated to say.

[EARTH LAW: 0.0017% → 0.0117%.]

[WIELD THRESHOLD — 0.01%: CROSSED.]

[WORLD GROWTH: +0.2 SQ MI. NEW TERRAIN SEEDED: GREY STONE RIDGE — NORTHERN QUARTER.]

He felt the threshold before he finished reading. The Earth law didn’t land like an attack he could throw — it landed like weight, settling deep, making itself at home: bones feeling thicker, skin drawing tight and dense, his whole frame quietly reinforced. He stood, pressed his knuckles against the Worldroot, and felt the difference in his joints — harder, sturdier, built a little closer to the stone the law came from.

[PASSIVE EFFECT: FOUNDATION HARDENING. PHYSICAL DEFENSE INCREASED.]

’Fourteen ants and I’m harder to kill,’ he thought, flexing his hand. ’There’s a colony to the north with thousands of these things — that’s not an obstacle, that’s a farm.’

The arch dropped him somewhere new — because of course it did; the door never repeated itself — and he knew within ten steps that this was a worse neighborhood. The rocks were bigger, ridged and split like old scars, and the mist hung lower; he moved through it wrapped in the Ghostveil, a hole in the world, and started meeting the locals.

The first was a centipede the length of a street, pouring itself between two boulders in a slow ripple of plates, every segment carrying more lines than a worker’s whole body.

[SCAN: STONECOIL CENTIPEDE. LINE DENSITY: HIGH. DANGER TO HOST: HIGH.]

[RECOMMENDATION: NO.]

He gave it the widest berth he could. A while later he stopped to check his bearings beside a house-sized boulder — and the boulder breathed.

[SCAN: BOULDER MIMIC BEETLE. DANGER TO HOST: HIGH.]

[NOTE: THE HOST HAS RESTED AGAINST TWO OF THESE SINCE ARRIVAL.]

Ren got away from the boulder with as much dignity as he could find, and made a mental note to never trust geology again. The veil was the only reason he was surviving; not one of these things had even twitched toward him.

Then he came around a ridge of broken shell, and met the exception.

It sat in the open by a crack in the ground, and his stomach dropped before his brain caught up, because he knew that shape — low, shelled, one claw way too big for its body, the same build as the thing that had put a rock through his heart on day one. He couldn’t tell if it was the same type or the same one grown fat, but it looked the same, and that was enough to make his old wounds itch. One difference mattered more than the size: the lines. They crowded its armor so densely the plates read as more line than shell, layer over layer, like a book written on top of itself.

[SCAN: SNAPCLAW — HIGH-DENSITY VARIANT.]

[LINE DENSITY: SEVERE.]

[DANGER TO HOST: EXTREME.]

[THE HOST’S PREVIOUS ENCOUNTER WITH THIS SPECIES IS ON FILE.]

”Yeah,” Ren muttered, frozen. ”I was there.”

EXTREME — the scan had never said that word before. And as if to underline it, the snapclaw’s antennae swung toward him: not at him, not fixing, not charging — just sweeping the space where he stood, holding there for one long breath while every muscle in his body forgot how to work, and then moving off. It couldn’t find him; but alone out of everything he’d met in this world, it could tell the plain wasn’t empty.

The smart move was to leave — he knew it, he’d been practicing it all day — but he stood there behind the veil, heart slamming, and ran a different kind of math. A straight fight was suicide; the ordinary shrimp had killed him faster than thought, and this one was to that one what a soldier was to a worker. But the pyre’s bill was exactly one death, and he had exactly one revival left in the day’s bank — enough, with nothing to spare: a trump card he’d never once fired, a world where death gave refunds, and the fee for the classroom already counted out. If he was ever going to learn what Last Pyre actually did — how it felt, what it cost, what five hundred times everything looked like when it landed — there would never be a cheaper hour than this one.

’I promised the general I’d never use it,’ he thought, creeping closer over the broken ground, quiet as a ghost. ’Unless there was no other option. On this plane — that’s the part I didn’t say out loud. This isn’t that plane.’

He got as near as he dared, near enough to count the lines on that oversized claw; then he set his feet, took one last breath, and lit the match.

Nothing in his life had ever felt like it.

The burn caught somewhere below his dantian and went everywhere at once, and it didn’t ask permission. His foundation — twenty-three thousand tons (increase due to earth law) of it, months of clawing — poured itself into the fire like it had always been kindling; his energy went with it, and then the laws, green-gold and cold grey both, unwinding out of him in ribbons. And under all of it, something deeper tore loose that he had no name for in that moment — only the animal certainty that the thing burning now was him, the him that was left when body and energy and law were all subtracted.

The snapclaw spun — no veil in the world hides a furnace — and its antennae snapped dead onto him, the great claw cocking open, and for a fraction of a heartbeat it was a pure race: its speed against his last second.

The burn finished first.

Ren fired the Stormsever with everything the pyre had given him, and the world in front of him simply ended. The attack came out as a wall of green-gold and grey light, taller than the mist and wider than he could see, and it swept across the plain in one stroke — boulders, ridges, the snapclaw, all of it swallowed as the wave passed through. The ground itself was scooped away down to bare rock, a wound miles wide, like a giant had dragged a blade across the world. He never heard the sound it made; his body burned to nothing before the light even finished traveling.

One second. Everything happened inside it.

Then the grass caught him.

— • —

He came up under the Worldroot on his hands and knees, shaking, the echo of burning still crawling over skin the revival had just rebuilt. Kaia was already there — no words, just warmth crashing over him from the trunk with an edge he’d never felt before, halfway between terror and fury, the bond’s version of someone screaming his name. He knelt in the grass and let her, because she’d earned it; from her side, he’d just gone somewhere she couldn’t follow and stopped existing.

[OUROBOROS: REVIVAL COMPLETE. REMAINING TODAY: 0.]

When his hands finally steadied, he sat back against the root and made himself look at the thing he’d felt in the fire — the deep tearing, the him under the him. He knew what it was now: it hadn’t been his body burning, not really; the body was just the wick. Last Pyre had been burning his soul — the same soul that was tied to this world, to the grass under him, the root at his back, to Kaia — and by every rule he understood, that fire should have run down the tie and taken all of it, the whole world, everything he’d built and everyone bonded to it.

It hadn’t — the world was untouched, and so was she. And he understood, sitting there with the smell of nothing on his hands, why: Ouroboros had stood in the fire’s way. His talent hadn’t just caught his death at the end; it had taken the toll the whole way through, eaten the burn’s deepest bill itself, and kept the flames off everything the soul was anchored to. That was why the general’s vault kept Last Pyre as a funeral — everyone else’s soul had nowhere to hide. His did.

’The world stays safe,’ he thought, and something that had been clenched in his chest since the fire let go. ’Whatever I spend, it never touches them.’

He sat there a while longer, adding up the day: no deaths left in the bank, Earth law in his bones, a colony full of walking law to the north — and somewhere out on that plain, a crater he had never seen finish forming, with either a dead snapclaw in it or a very, very angry one.

He wanted to go look — wanted it badly enough to taste — but a man with nothing left in the bank had no business knocking on that door tonight, so the answer would have to keep, sitting out there in the dark of a dead world, waiting for his revives to reset.

Morning first. Then the crater.
