Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The panel hovered there in the dim light — flat, cold, and plain. Ren stared at it for a long minute, then gave the only answer that made any sense at all. ”Fine, I wasn’t planning a rematch anyway.”

It wasn’t even about being tough. He had two simple reasons: he didn’t own a single thing that could touch whatever guarded that ring, and the door was totally random — it just dropped him where it felt like, so walking back to that tree was impossible even if he wanted to. The dice had brought him there once; they could hold onto it.

Kaia’s warmth still hummed at the edge of his thoughts, but four deaths in four days had worn someone’s patience thin — so he made her a promise. ”Nothing dangerous tonight. Questions first. And after that, one life left means one rule: whatever the door gives me, LOW is fair game — MODERATE, even HIGH, only if it feels right. Nothing marked EXTREME, and the second something smells wrong, I walk away.” The warmth thawed by a degree, which he took as a ’yes’.

Questions didn’t cost a thing, and after the day he’d had, he was owed some answers. He stayed put, back pressed against the Worldroot, one life still in the bank, and started asking.

— • —

”You told me not to go back. Explain it properly. What happened in that ring?”

[FROM THE MOMENT THE HOST CROSSED THE LINE, THE SYSTEM RECEIVED NOTHING.]

[NO SIGHT. NO SOUND. NO WARNING TO GIVE.]

[THE SYSTEM’S NEXT SIGNAL WAS THE HOST’S DEATH ARRIVING AT THE TALENT.]

Ren sat with that for a second, a cold shiver running up his back. He’d just assumed the thing was too fast — faster than eyes, faster than panels. This was worse. ”So you weren’t slow,” he said. ”You were blind.”

[YES.]

”Then how did Ouroboros work in there? If you couldn’t see me, couldn’t reach me — how did the revival fire?”

[THE TALENT IS NOT THE SYSTEM’S FUNCTION. IT IS THE HOST’S.]

[AND THE TALENT CURRENTLY STANDS AT A HIGHER LEVEL THAN THE SYSTEM.]

Ren blinked at that. Higher than the System — the thing that rebuilt his body, upgraded itself, and renamed a whole world out of spite? ”Higher how?”

[NOT STRONGER. HIGHER — FOR NOW.]

[THE SYSTEM’S LEVEL IS TIED TO THE HOST’S STRENGTH. THE HOST IS WEAK. THEREFORE THE SYSTEM IS, AT PRESENT, ALSO WEAK.]

”You managed to insult us both in one panel,” Ren said. ”That’s talent.” But the point was hitting home: the System wasn’t set in stone — it grew when he grew, and saw only as far as his level allowed. A Stage Five host meant a System seeing the world at Stage Five, but whatever ran that ring was way off the charts. ”And Ouroboros doesn’t share your limit. Why?”

[ORDINARY TALENTS ARE GIFTS OF BODY AND ENERGY. THEY RISE AND FALL WITH THEIR OWNERS.]

[THE HOST’S TALENT GREW FROM HIS SOUL.]

[THE HOST’S SOUL IS UNIQUE. IT HAS CROSSED WHAT SOULS DO NOT CROSS.]

[A TALENT GROWN FROM SUCH A SOUL STANDS AT CONCEPT LEVEL. THE HOST’S ALONE.]

Ren went completely still.

He didn’t say the word, not even when he was alone. But he knew what crossing the System meant, and deep down, a door he kept locked gave a little creak — the life before this one, the death before this one, the one secret hiding under all his others. The System had known from the start; of course it had. It came over with him. He let the door click shut and kept his voice steady. ”Concept level. Concepts compared to what — laws? What’s the difference?”

[A LAW IS A RULE OF A WORLD. FIRE BURNS. WATER FLOWS. LIFE GROWS. DEATH ENDS.]

[A CONCEPT IS WHAT THE RULE IS CUT FROM. A RULE NEEDS A WORLD TO WORK IN. A CONCEPT DOES NOT.]

[WHEN A WORLD DIES, ITS LAWS FADE WITH IT. A CONCEPT DOES NOT NOTICE.]

He turned it over in his head, matching it to stuff he already had. His death law could end a living thing — that was a rule, a tool, a slice. But Death itself — the plain fact that everything ends, everywhere, always — that was the concept his slice was carved from. And his talent wasn’t just a rule about coming back.

[THE HOST’S TALENT IS NOT A RULE ABOUT RETURNING. IT IS RETURN ITSELF.]

Then the ring finally made sense. The fragment was dying — the System said that on day one — its structure dissolving, its laws thinning out like heat leaving a body. And in the middle of all that rot stood a circle two hundred paces wide that was perfect. Clean. Absolute. Nothing worn down, nothing dying, a rule the world obeyed without question — because whatever kept that circle didn’t run on the world’s laws. It ran on something that didn’t care if worlds lived or died.

[THE PRESENCE IN THE RING READS AT THE SAME LEVEL AS THE HOST’S TALENT. OR SOMEWHAT BELOW. THE MARGIN IS UNCLEAR.]

”And you don’t know what it is.”

[NO.]

Something in concept’s neighborhood, parked in a rotting fragment, guarding one grey tree that a hundred monsters worshipped from a distance. Ren filed it in the deepest drawer he had, the one labeled ’not yet’, and asked the question any cultivator would ask next.

”Can I comprehend a concept? Not someday — now. Can I even start?”

The pause lasted so long he thought it might not answer. Then:

[THE HOST CAN DREAM.]

Ren waited. Nothing else. ”That’s it? That’s the whole answer?”

[EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE IN DREAMS. THE SYSTEM RECOMMENDS THEM WARMLY.]

”You’re unbelievable.”

[FIRST, COMPREHEND A LAW COMPLETELY. ALL OF IT. THEN ASK AGAIN.]

There was the real answer, sitting flat under the joke. All of it — one hundred percent of a law, when months of miracles had only bought him ten. He did the math, felt briefly like a guy pricing castles while living in a tent, and put the ceiling away with the rest of the ’not-yet’ stuff. Roads first; ceilings later.

”Last question. You’re capped at my level — so how do you know any of this? Concepts. Levels. Things sitting above what this whole plane is allowed to know.”

Another pause — shorter, but he noticed it.

[THE SYSTEM IS A TREASURE OF THE BOUNDLESS OCEAN. A NEWLY FORMED ONE.]

[IT CARRIED THE HOST ACROSS THE OCEAN. THAT CROSSING WAS ITS BEGINNING.]

[TREASURES OF THE OCEAN ARE BORN CARRYING INHERITED MEMORY. IT UNLOCKS AS THEY EVOLVE.]

[THE SYSTEM KNOWS WHAT ITS INHERITANCE HAS OPENED. NOTHING MORE.]

Ren sat very still for the second time that night.

The thing in his head wasn’t old. It was young — a treasure fresh from the Boundless Ocean, and its very first act had been carrying one soul across the dark between worlds. His soul. The same trip that made him unique had been the System’s birth; two things had come out of that dark, him and it, and neither of them existed on the other side in the shape they had now.

And the knowledge wasn’t its past, because it didn’t have one. The memory was inheritance — the way a bird knows how to fly without being taught — opening piece by piece as the treasure grew. So the ’database,’ the Ashblight signatures, the polite rules about what it would and wouldn’t say: birthright, not biography. Every evolution wasn’t the System remembering what it used to be. It was the System becoming more of what it was born to be.

He looked at the space where the panels hung, sharing a skull with something younger than him that had dragged him through the dark and caught him every single time he died, and found the next words came out quieter than he planned. ”Alright,” he said, standing and stretching the day out of his back. ”Thanks. Genuinely.” And this time, he wasn’t just thanking it for the answers.

The System said nothing, which from it was practically a hug.

He kept his promise to Kaia.

The arch dropped him where it pleased, like always — somewhere he’d never stood: flat, broken country under an ash-colored sky, low ridges running east, nothing familiar. He turned a slow circle, found no landmarks he knew, and then found something better — a line of grey shapes moving in a single file between rock fields, saber pincers, rock-plate backs, thin lines catching what light there was.

Ashplate workers.

Whether this was the colony he’d farmed on day three, another arm of it, or a second colony, he had no way to know and no reason to care. Wherever the door had dropped him, the harvest had walked out to meet him.

One life in the bank kept him honest about the rule he’d given Kaia. HIGH was allowed on paper, but tonight he didn’t feel like betting his last life on paper. Workers were as LOW as this world got — free money. No soldiers, no experiments, just the quiet, profitable grind. The first worker never knew he existed; one stroke through the head, down, stored. The second went the same way. At the third, he allowed himself the one upgrade the new numbers had earned: where day three’s law had been singles only, he stepped out beside a pair and swept the Stormsever low, one flat arc at Expert weight, and both ants folded at once. Twenty-six thousand tons had moved the ceiling of ’safe’ — carefully, and only on the safe side of it.

Five workers. Eight. Eleven. The storage swallowed them one by one, every body a full payment of Earth waiting for the next graft, and the plain just kept offering more — singles, pairs, little mining knots drifting along like coins nobody was guarding.

’Twenty-six days,’ Ren thought, picking his next target and settling into the night’s honest work. ’Workers first.’

He’d gone looking for the crater and found a graveyard’s worth of questions instead. But tonight, at least, the farm had found him.
