Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Once the girls were on their feet, Ren pulled up their full status. The tickers had stopped. The evolutions were finally done.

[VESPER WREN — EVOLUTION COMPLETE.]

[BLOODLINE BRANCH RESOLVED: PRIMAL BOND (RARE). SHE MAY NOW BOND RARER BEASTS, FEED THEM HER STRENGTH, AND TAKE A PARTIAL BEAST-FORM OF HER OWN. LIFE-SENSE: AREA-WIDE.]

[BONDED BEAST — MISTWHISKER: ADVANCED TO YOUNG VOID-BEAST. GROWTH ONGOING.]

[EIRA VALE — EVOLUTION COMPLETE.]

[PLANT BRANCH RESOLVED: VERDANT FONT (RARE). GROWTH, HEALING, AND REFINEMENT NOW OPERATE FAR ABOVE HER STAGE. STRONGEST INSIDE A WORLD.]

[BOTH: FOUNDATIONS RESTRUCTURED. BOTTLENECKS CLEARED. NO LAW COMPREHENSION GAINED.]

He read through it twice, and the last of his worry just faded. Not a scratch on them. Just two people who’d walked in as themselves and came out as something more.

”Okay,” he said, ”you’re both fine — better than fine.”

Eira was busy flexing her fingers, watching a faint green glow trace along them. ”Can we tell the others?” she asked. ”The group and Selene — about the bond, about being in here?”

”The bond and the world, sure — everyone already knows I’m World Creation, so having an inner world wasn’t exactly a secret.” Ren’s voice dropped. ”But the talent’s different, and I don’t want to say what it really does out loud in that building.”

Vesper caught the shift immediately. ”You think the walls have ears.”

”I think we’ve been hit more times than I can count, and the General warned us there’s a mole high up in the Alliance, so I honestly don’t know which rooms are clean anymore.” He kept his voice practical, the way he did when something mattered too much to fluff up. ”The seal keeps you two from ever talking about the talent, so this isn’t about you — it’s about me, and I’m not going to stand in a building the enemy has already walked through twice just to lay out what Endless Graft can do.”

”But you are going to explain it,” Eira said, reading him like she always did.

”To the group and the General, somewhere I’ve swept first — because I can’t run the talent at full speed without a steady stream of materials, and the only people who can feed me that are in this room or wearing a grey coat, so hiding it would just be getting in my own way.” He gave a small shrug. ”I just get to pick the room where it happens.”

The girls nodded; it was the kind of caution that had kept him alive this long, and neither of them argued.

And underneath it all, in the place he never talked about, one thing stayed off every list he’d ever share — because Endless Graft he could hand to his people when it was safe, but Ouroboros was a different matter, one life returned every ten years, a card he meant to keep at the very bottom of the deck, buried so deep he might one day forget he was even holding it — because he wanted to live his whole life on the main plane and never, ever have to turn it over.

”Come on,” he said, getting up. ”Let’s go tell them the parts they can hear.”

And the world folded away around all three of them.

He gathered everyone in the annex common room — the whole cohort, and Selene, who took one look at the girls and went completely still.

She saw it before anyone said a word. Ren watched his mentor’s eyes move over Vesper and Eira, cataloging them the way only Selene could — the cleared skin, the denser foundations, the quiet vitality that hadn’t been there yesterday — and land, finally, on the white shape padding at Vesper’s heel.

Mistwhisker chose that moment to flow up to hound-size and back down, just to show off, her law-marked flanks pulsing green and grey.

The room made a sound.

”Okay,” Yuelan said, standing up so fast her chair scraped. ”What. Happened.”

So Ren told them. The short version — Vesper and Eira had accepted the subject bond; they’d cultivated inside his inner world; the world had remade them, and their beast too. He kept the talent out of it — that was for later, somewhere without walls he didn’t trust — and nobody in the room reached for it. They’d learned.

The reactions hit all at once.

Iris was already circling Eira, reading her foundation with that Ducal precision. ”Your bottleneck’s just — gone,” she said, half-accusation, half-wonder. ”You were stuck two months ago. Now it’s gone.”

”It’s gone,” Eira agreed, and couldn’t help but grin.

Kaelen said nothing for a moment, just studied Mistwhisker with the flat attention he gave anything dangerous, then gave a short nod — his version of impressed. ”Useful,” was all he said, which for Kaelen was basically a paragraph.

Yueying watched it all with those still eyes and said, quietly, ”that’s how it is.” She looked at Ren a beat longer than the others did, then let it go.

Cassian leaned forward, and if there was a flicker of something behind his eyes — two people getting supercharged while his own channels sat dead — he buried it under curiosity, because that was just who he was. ”How’s it feel?” he asked the girls. ”From the inside.”

Vesper actually had to think about it. ”Like the ceiling I’d been pushing against my whole life just... wasn’t there,” she said. ”Like someone opened a window I didn’t know was painted shut.”

”Everything’s deeper,” Eira added. ”Cleaner. And I could grow you a garden right now, Cassian. A real one.”

”I’d take a garden,” Cassian said, and the room laughed, and it was fine.

Then Yuelan planted her hands on her hips.

”Okay, hold on. Hold ON.” She jabbed a finger at them. ”They get the magic-tree glow-up, the free upgrade, the bottleneck delete — and I get nothing? Because I am on the BPL pathway? This is discrimination against Bloodline Plant Lords, and I want it on the record.” She rounded on Ren. ”Where are my founding-member perks? Where are the badges?”

”You can’t be a subject,” Ren said, fighting a smile. ”You’re a BPL. Two World Cores can’t nest, remember?”

”I remember it being unfair,” Yuelan said, dropping back into her chair with enormous dignity. ”Founding member. No badge. No tree. I’m writing a complaint.”

Even Selene’s mouth twitched at that.

Selene pulled the girls aside a few minutes later, and Ren caught the tail of it — his mentor asking careful questions, the way she asked everything, filing what she was allowed to know and quietly setting aside what she wasn’t. When she came back to stand beside Ren, she watched the cohort crowd around Vesper and Eira for a while before she spoke.

”You built something that remakes people just by letting them stand in it,” she said. Not quite a question.

”The world did,” Ren said. ”I just opened the door.”

Selene gave him a long look — the one that meant she knew there was more, and wasn’t going to reach for it.

Lyra was the last to come over.

She hugged Eira, gripped Vesper’s hands, and told them both she was so happy for them — and she meant every word, because Lyra Moonwhisper had never once begrudged anyone a good thing.

But there was a small, quiet ache under it that she didn’t let reach her face.

It wasn’t the power. She didn’t want to be a subject; she knew exactly why she couldn’t be. It was the closeness of it — two people now threaded into Ren’s own world, permanent, family in a way the word barely covered, standing on the inside of something she’d only ever been told about. She thought about a corridor she’d sat in for two hours, unable to open a door. She thought about ’come see me after,’ and how neither of them had ever quite gotten to after.

She squeezed Vesper’s hands once more, let go, and smiled like she meant it. She mostly did.

Ren, three feet away and oblivious as ever to this exact frequency, caught her eye and smiled back, easy and warm, and Lyra’s traitor heart did the thing it always did, so she looked away first.

It was Iris, in the end, who asked the question the whole room had been circling.

”This world of yours.” She said it evenly, arms crossed, but her eyes were bright. ”The one that just rebuilt two people in front of us.” A beat. ”If it’s not a problem — could the rest of us see it?”

The room went quiet in a different way. Every head turned toward Ren.

Selene raised an eyebrow, and didn’t say she was curious too. She didn’t have to.

Ren looked around at all of them — his cohort, his mentor, the people who’d stood in a warded room and chosen him over their own fear — and thought about the one gift he could never give them, and the one he could.

”Yeah,” he said. ”You can see it.”

He smiled.

”Tomorrow, I’ll show you the world.”
