Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The tour ended how all good days end — way too fast, with everyone acting like they weren’t dragging their feet. Ren gathered the group near the Worldroot one last time, told them to huddle up, and pulled them back through himself; the grass folded away, the annex reformed, and normal lamplight felt honestly dull to everyone standing in it.

”One more thing before you lot scatter,” Ren said. ”That offer from inside — it’s not just for when things go wrong. You can come in whenever you want. There’s only one rule, and it isn’t mine, it’s just how the thing works: the world opens through me. If you’re inside my sensing range, ask and I’ll feel it and pull you through. Outside my range, there’s no door to knock on.”

Yuelan’s hand was up before he even finished. ”Define whenever. Because what I’m hearing is daily naps in the best cultivation spot in the Alliance, and I want that in writing.”

”Whenever means whenever,” Ren said, and then, because it was Yuelan, ”within reason.”

Vesper and Eira didn’t say anything — they didn’t need to, since the bond made them the only two in the room the rule didn’t apply to — but Yuelan caught the small, identical curve at the corners of their mouths and pointed at it like she’d witnessed a crime. ”There. That. That smug little subject smile. I’m filing a complaint.”

The group broke up laughing and drifted out in twos and threes, still talking about lakes and deserts and a six-hundred-foot tree. Lyra was the last through the door; she paused there, not quite looking at him. ”You still owe me a conversation,” she said, and was gone before he could answer.

He gave it an hour, then stepped back through himself into the world.

It was quiet with everyone gone — his again, the way a house is yours again after the guests leave. Kaia glowed once from deep in the Worldroot’s trunk, a wordless hello, and he sent one back as he walked out under the branches.

There was one thing he hadn’t touched yet, and he’d left it alone on purpose. The Graveyard of Worlds had been sitting in his panel like a wrapped gift ever since it appeared, and he’d read its description a dozen times without ever pressing it, because some part of him wanted the house settled first — the girls bonded, the group told, the tour done. Now, the house was settled.

”Okay,” he said to nobody. ”Let’s see you work.”

[GRAVEYARD OF WORLDS — ACTIVATED.]

[SEARCHING THE BOUNDLESS OCEAN FOR FRAGMENTED PLANES...]

A low pulse started at the back of his head — soft, steady, patient, like sonar rolling out into deep water and coming back empty. The Boundless Ocean was, by every account the System had ever given him, endless; dead worlds drifted in it with nothing to mark where they were, so searching it wasn’t checking a map, it was dragging a net through a sea with no floor. This would take days, he figured. Maybe weeks. That was fine — he had plenty to do while it trawled.

He turned away and got three steps.

[FRAGMENT LOCATED.]

Ren stopped mid-stride and looked back over his shoulder at the panel. ”That took ten seconds.”

The System did not care what it had taken. The panels were already cascading.

[ANCHORING FRAGMENT ADJACENT TO THE HOST’S WORLD...]

[SCANNING FRAGMENT...]

He felt it before he understood it — not through his own senses but through the world’s, far out past the borders, in a dark that wasn’t any direction he could point to. Something vast and slow was being dragged closer, the way a wreck gets winched up off the sea floor, and his world noticed; the Worldroot’s leaves turned as if into a wind, and Kaia pressed up against the inside of the trunk, curiosity spiking down the bond so hard it almost tickled.

[SCAN COMPLETE.]

[NO FULLY INTELLIGENT SPECIES DETECTED.]

[DOMINANT LIFE: INSECT-TYPE MONSTERS. TEMPERAMENT: EXTREMELY AGGRESSIVE.]

Ren read that twice, and what he mostly felt was relief. A whole dying world with nothing left in it that could talk — just bugs, and not the friendly kind. He’d half-feared the function would drop a world full of people into his lap on the first pull, and he had no idea what he’d have done with that. Bugs, he could work with.

[ANCHOR: COMPLETE.]

[CONSTRUCTING STABLE PASSAGE — ACCESS LIMITED TO THE HOST AND THOSE THE HOST PERMITS.]

At the world’s northern edge, the not-quite-sky creased. A seam of grey light drew itself down like a knife opening an envelope, then widened, steadied, and settled into a standing arch tall enough to walk a house through. It didn’t hum, didn’t crackle, didn’t spit lightning; it just stood there, patient, a door with his name on the lock. Through it, blurred as if through water, he could make out another land — dim brown ground ridged like old shell, an ash-colored sky, and nothing moving anywhere he could see.

[INTEGRATION CONDITION: DEFEAT THE FRAGMENT’S APEX MONSTER AND CLAIM THE WORLD CORE FUSED WITHIN ITS BODY.]

So the core wasn’t sitting in some ruin waiting to be picked up. The function’s own rules said strongest entity or core, either one — and this world had gone and fused the two jobs together, its heart buried inside the one thing in there worth being afraid of. The price of the prize was a fight with the king of the bugs. Ren felt his blood warm at that in a way he decided not to examine too closely.

[HOST: NAME THE FRAGMENT.]

Name it. Ren straightened up without noticing he’d done it. This was his first — the first grave the Graveyard had ever found him, the first world he was going to take — and firsts mattered; history remembered firsts. It deserved a name with weight. Something majestic. Something the records would have to write out in full, every single time, forever.

He thought about it properly, arms crossed, longer than he’d thought about some life-or-death decisions, and then he cleared his throat and gave it to the quiet air with his whole chest.

”The Supreme Verdant-Grey Dominion of the Eternal Sovereign’s First Conquest, First Jewel of the Boundless Ocean, Cradle of Ten Thousand Coming Worlds.”

The System paused.

It was a small pause, barely a second — but panels didn’t pause. In all this time, not once. And this pause had a texture to it he’d never felt from the System before: the exact silence of someone who has just heard something so terrible they need a moment to recover.

[REGISTERED.]

[FRAGMENT DESIGNATION: INSECTOID WORLD 1.]

”That is not what I said.” The words were out of him before the panel even finished glowing, and he was pointing at it — actually pointing, alone in his own world, arguing with a floating rectangle. ”That’s not a shortening, that’s a rejection. You asked me to name it—”

Then he stopped, because the surprise finally caught up with the outrage and shoved it out of the way, and something close to wonder crossed his face.

It had never done that. Ever. The System handed him things, told him things, timed things strangely — but it had never overridden him, never edited him, never once had an opinion. Panels reported. This one had judged.

The chill lasted exactly as long as it took him to remember what he’d worked out a long time ago and kept having to relearn: this wasn’t a system in any traditional sense of the word. It was a treasure — something fused to him, alive in its own strange way — and treasures of that grade didn’t stay still. It was growing right alongside everything else of his. Kaia had started as warmth inside a seed and become a person. The world had started as twelve broken square miles and become a place with weather. And now the deadpan voice in his head had apparently developed taste.

Ren looked from the panel to the grey arch standing patient at the edge of his world, laughed once, and gave up. ”Fine. Insectoid World 1.”

Then, since the thing was apparently in a talkative mood today, he asked the question that actually mattered. Going into a strange world to kill the strongest thing in it wasn’t a spar; it meant planning for the worst, and he happened to carry insurance that no one else on the planet had. ”Ouroboros,” he said. ”How many times can I revive in there?”

The answer came fast.

[CROSS-FUNCTION: OUROBOROS.]

[REVIVAL ALLOWANCE IN THIS FRAGMENT: 2 PER DAY.]

[THE FRAGMENT IS THIN AND NEARLY DISSOLVED. ITS RULES ARE WEAK. DEATH HOLDS POORLY THERE.]

Ren read it twice to make sure he wasn’t adding a word that wasn’t there. Two per day. In the main world, Ouroboros gave him one life every ten years, and the function’s own notes had projected maybe two or three revivals per fragment, total. But this world was so far gone, so close to melting back into the Ocean, that death could barely keep its grip on anything inside it. Two deaths a day, every day, reset each morning. As insurance went, that was absurd.

Then one more panel slid up under the others.

[RECOMMENDATION: DO NOT DIE IN THE FIRST PLACE.]

Ren stared at it for a long moment. ”You named a world out of spite ten seconds ago, and now you’re giving me life advice.”

The System did not respond. Somehow, that was worse.

He was still shaking his head when the next notice arrived, and it took the grin off his face line by line.

[NOTICE: THE FRAGMENT IS SMALL, AND ITS DISSOLUTION HAS ALREADY BEGUN.]

[THE HOST’S WORLD IS STILL YOUNG. IT CANNOT SUSTAIN AND BEAR THIS WEIGHT FOR LONG.]

[THE ANCHOR WILL HOLD FOR ONE MONTH. AFTER THAT, THE FRAGMENT DISSOLVES INTO THE BOUNDLESS OCEAN — WITH EVERYTHING IN IT.]

So there was a clock. His world was whole again, but whole didn’t mean grown — anchoring an entire other world, even a small dying one, was a real weight, and his own world was simply too young to carry it forever. One month was what it could hold. Thirty days to get in, track down the strongest insect in a world full of them, kill it, and take the core out of its body — or stand there and watch the whole thing melt back into the Ocean, prize and all.

He turned the number over a few times and decided it was enough. Tight, but enough. He’d worked with worse timers, and this one at least came with two spare lives a day.

Somewhere on the other side of that door, in a dead world with no one left to argue about the name, the strongest insect alive was carrying his prize around fused inside its body, and it had no idea he was coming to collect.

He had one month to knock.
