Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

Ren’s room hadn’t changed in the days since the fight. He had.

He sat on the floor, back against the bed, rolling a used graft fragment between his fingers. He let his mind run the same circle it had been running for days.

Cassian’s cultivation was gone. Not damaged. Not sealed. Just gone. He’d burned his channels dry keeping the line for Lyra. Ren couldn’t think about it without his chest tightening. The others were healing fine; Eira had the cohort on a strict recovery schedule, and the med bay hummed all night. That part made sense. A fight has a cost. Anyone who paid it had made their choice.

The other question, though. That wouldn’t leave him alone.

’Where was the principal?’

He’d been chewing on it for days. Caelan had been there for the first attack — watching, testing, letting it play out. Ren had made his peace with that. Mostly. But this time? Fourteen void-fed hybrids inside the wards. An apex hunter stalking his friends through the halls. Lyra dying on the south wing floor. And no Caelan. No Alliance heavy hitters either. The Alliance was spread thin across six burning sites that night, sure. He got that. But understanding it didn’t make it right. They had stamped Protected Survival Assets on seven kids, then let the wards break twice in one season. Someone owed them.

Kaia pulsed against his anger. Not fighting it, just keeping it from digging in.

He let the spent fragment roll onto the floor. He’d kept grafting all week. It was the only thing that felt like moving forward.

[WORLD STATUS: 13.1 SQ MI. PLANAR INTAKE EFFICIENCY: 36.4%.]

[STABILITY: HOLDING. CONDITION: UNFINISHED.]

Two fragments left. Every graft took clean — Death to cut, Life to bind, Kaia guiding the join from inside. Every graft moved the numbers a bit. The world healed like dirt heals: slow, steady, on its own clock, not his.

And until it healed, everything he had was running at a discount. He’d learned that the hard way, right after the battle. He’d tried to feed his Life-law into the med bay, thinking he could clear it out in a day. It worked — ten percent of the law of Life isn’t nothing — but it came out at maybe a third of its real power. The law didn’t flow from him anymore. It flowed from the world. And the world was thirteen rough square miles with a stutter.

[LIFE LAW: 10.2%. DEATH LAW: 10.8%.]

[OUTPUT: LIMITED BY WORLD CONDITION.]

So he couldn’t fix anyone. He could only dull the pain and hurry nature along. Strongest person on campus, and he couldn’t even close his friends’ wounds. That stung.

Then there was the pressure. The kind that didn’t have a name yet.

[SECONDARY TALENT DETECTED: GESTATING.]

[FORMATION SUSPENDED. CAUSE: HOST WORLD BELOW FUNCTIONAL THRESHOLD.]

Anyone who hit Stage 5 — any pathway — had a one-in-ten shot at waking a personal talent. Ren could feel his. It sat under the Worldroot like a seed under frost: alive, waiting, stuck. It couldn’t finish forming until the world was whole. Even the System couldn’t read it yet.

The System had its own complaints.

[SYSTEM EVOLUTION: PENDING.]

[ASSESSMENT: CURRENT STATE DOES NOT CONSTITUTE A COMPLETE STAGE FIVE EXISTENCE. CONDITION: WORLD RESTORATION.]

It had promised new functions at every tier since the night it woke. It wasn’t breaking that promise — it just wouldn’t count him yet. By its math, a Tier 2 carrying a thirteen-square-mile world wasn’t a real Tier 2. Restore the world, the System evolves, the talent forms, the laws flow full strength.

Everything went through the same door. ’Heal the world.’

Which brought him, as always, back to Cassian.

[QUERY: SUBJECT ELIGIBILITY — CASSIAN ROOK.]

[RESULT: INELIGIBLE. PATHWAY: BLOODLINE PLANT LORD. CORE SEED: ALIVE. A WORLD CORE CANNOT BOND A WORLD CORE.]

Destroyed channels didn’t change what Cassian was. His seed was still alive, so he was still a Bloodline Plant Lord. The one bond that could have poured world-energy through his broken channels was closed. Ren had run the query four times. The answer never changed. But something underneath felt different. It wasn’t the System. It wasn’t logic. It was that quiet feeling that told him the Beetle was his. ’Not never. Just not yet.’ He didn’t trust it, but he didn’t throw it away either. He filed it next to the sealed talent and the waiting System — one more thing waiting for a healed world.

Vesper and Eira, though. He could help them. The bond didn’t fit his cohort, but it fit those two perfectly. A Bloodline-pathway beast tamer worn to the bone, and a Plant-pathway alchemist who’d spent days giving everything to everyone else. World-energy to recover in, faster cultivation, and for Eira, a garden that was actually a world. It would be a big ask. Everything on the table, no secrets left. But when the time came, he thought he would.

[SUBJECT CAPACITY: 6.]

[NOTE: CAPACITY LIMITED BY WORLD CONDITION. GROWS AS THE WORLD IS RESTORED.]

Six, for now. A sovereign with a kingdom you could walk across in a lunch hour.

’Fine,’ Ren thought. ’Then we heal the world.’

A knock at the door.

— • —

”Ren.” Selene’s voice was level as always. ”The principal needs to speak with you.”

The word principal hit him like a match to gas.

He was up and at the door before he’d even decided to move. If he’d been looking, he would have caught the expression on Selene’s face — tired, sad, bracing for something. He missed it. The anger had been sitting there for days, waiting for an exit. Now it had one.

’Good,’ he thought, walking. ’Finally.’ Questions were ready. Where were you? Where was the help? What’s the Alliance actually for? Kaia pushed a cool, slow pulse against the heat. He ignored it.

Three corridors later, he noticed they weren’t going to the principal’s office.

”Selene.” He slowed. The office was up the east stair. She’d taken the west one — down, toward the smell of sterile wards.

”Where are we going?”

”The medical bay,” she said, not looking at him.

The anger didn’t die. It just stumbled.

— • —

The private ward at the far end of the med bay had its own doors, its own wards, its own silence. A man Ren didn’t know stood in that quiet, next to the only bed in the room.

The coat hit him first. Alliance grey, cut for war. Nothing decorative but a small silver sigil at the collar. Under the sigil, a rank Ren didn’t recognize — nothing at Orien had ever needed that rank before. Then the pressure hit. The man wasn’t doing anything, just standing there, and the room seemed to bend around him anyway. Heavier than Selene. Heavier than Theron. Heavier than anything Ren had a name for.

’Wasn’t going to,’ Ren thought — then he saw the bed, and every question he’d spent days sharpening vanished.

Caelan Veyr lay under a web of pale-green ward-light. A Plant-pathway healer sat by his shoulder, hands hovering over his chest, working — not checking, working — without pause. One look told Ren why she couldn’t stop. The body under her hands was losing. No single wound to point at; there wasn’t a patch of skin that wasn’t one. The flesh was cracked like dry earth, dark in the fissures. It closed under her light, then split open again somewhere else. The face that had watched over Ren since his first day — that young, calm, faintly amused face — was totally still.

Only his chest moved.

Ren didn’t remember crossing the room. His hands hit the rail at the foot of the bed. The anger he’d been feeding for days was just gone. Nothing left. He turned to Selene, his voice sounding younger than he wanted.

”What happened to him?”

Something shifted behind Selene’s calm. She opened her mouth —

”I will tell you.”

The man in the grey coat stepped forward. He was older than the coat made him look — grey at the temples, lines at the eyes, the stillness of someone used to being obeyed. He looked down at Ren. His face was hard to look at. Not pity. Not command. It was an apology before a word was said.

Then the man — the heaviest presence Ren had ever felt — bent at the waist. A low, sharp, ninety-degree bow.

And stayed there.

”On behalf of the All-Being Survival Alliance,” he said, toward the floor, ”I am sorry.”

Ren stood at the foot of his principal’s bed, one hand on the rail, and couldn’t make a single word come out.
