Bloodline Plant Lord: Rise of the World Sovereign

The relay connected on the third attempt.

Ren sat on the edge of his bed with the comm balanced on his knee, listening to the encrypted channel cycle through its security handshake — two tones, a pause, a third tone, then the flat hum of a line that existed only because an Alliance relay officer had authorized it. The first two attempts had bounced: relay congestion, the network handling more priority traffic tonight than it was built for. The third attempt held, and after four seconds of silence his mother’s face appeared on the screen.

She was in a room he didn’t recognize. Blank walls, institutional lighting, a narrow window showing nothing but dark sky. She wore the field jacket she’d packed for Jupiter — the one with the reinforced shoulders and the pocket she kept emergency stims in — and her hair was pulled back in the tight knot she used when she was working, not resting. Behind her, Ren could see the edge of a packed bag and the corner of a second room where someone in Alliance gray was moving equipment.

She was already leaving.

”Ren.” Elena’s voice was steady. She had the same look she’d worn in the briefing room with Lieutenant Moran — the tactical focus, the refusal to waste time being afraid. ”We have the channel until 2200. Don’t spend it asking if we’re okay.”

”Are you okay?”

”I just told you not to ask that.”

”And you didn’t answer, which means you know I’m going to ask again.”

Something softened in her expression. Not a smile — Elena didn’t smile when the situation was real — but the slight release around her eyes that meant she’d been carrying something tightly and had just been reminded that her son knew her well enough to see it.

”We’re fine,” she said. ”Your father is in the other room arguing with the security detail commander about the transit corridor layout. Which means he’s fine, because if something were actually wrong he’d be quiet.” She paused. ”The liaison briefed us two hours ago. We know about the sites. We know about the move. We know about the gate.”

Ren processed that. They knew. He didn’t have to explain the six red points on the map, or the eighteen-year-old BPL who was gone, or the corruption zones spreading like ink on wet paper. His parents had already been told everything he’d been told, filtered through whatever classification level the Alliance liaison operated at.

”How much do you know about where they’re taking you?” he asked.

”Enough. Your father asked the same question in three different ways and got the same answer each time: classified above our clearance, classified above the liaison’s clearance, classified above everyone except people who use words like ’Warden’ without explaining what they mean.” Her jaw tightened slightly. ”I trust the protection. I don’t like the silence. But that’s not new.”

Adrian appeared behind Elena’s shoulder. He was carrying a data slate and wearing the expression Ren had learned to recognize over eighteen years of watching his father — the calm, methodical focus of a man who had decided the situation was serious and was responding by being useful instead of scared.

”The transit corridor is solid,” Adrian said, sitting down beside Elena. His eyes found Ren through the screen, and Ren saw the same thing he always saw in his father’s face when the world got complicated: steadiness. Not the performed kind. The kind that was built into the architecture. ”Two relay points, three escort changes, Tier 2 oversight at every handoff. They’re not cutting corners.”

”Good.”

”Your gate is tomorrow night.”

”Yes.”

Adrian nodded. He looked at Elena. She looked back. Twenty years of partnership compressed into a glance that said more than a conversation — the same look they’d shared in the guest suite, in the briefing room, in every moment since Ren’s Awakening when the world had shown them another piece of the price their son’s talent carried.

”Tell us about Sovereign Dawn,” Elena said. ”Not the security briefing version. The real one.”

Ren told them. Fourteen nations’ worth of cultivators. Students from six planes. The Crown Scholar System, Dawnspire Planet, an academy maintained at Tier 3+ security infrastructure. Eighteen-month standard term. Alliance relay comms with a six-to-twelve-hour delay. Visits not practical during the term. Selene traveling with the cohort as their assigned instructor. Kaelen enrolled separately through Voss channels.

He told them the parts that mattered to parents: the cohort was going together. Cassian would be there. Lyra, Iris, Yuelan, Yueying, Vesper. The team that had fought beside him and hadn’t flinched when his secrets came out. He wouldn’t be alone.

Elena listened to all of it. When he finished, she was quiet for a moment — the specific silence that meant she was separating the things she wanted to say from the things she needed to say, and choosing the second list.

”You’re going to be further from us than you’ve ever been,” she said. ”Further than Jupiter. Further than relay corridors and encrypted channels and five-minute windows. And I need you to hear something before that happens.”

Ren waited.

”The safest place for your father and me is not near you. That is not your fault. It is not something you caused, or something you could have prevented by being less than what you are. It is the arithmetic of a situation that was built by people who target families to control exceptional children, and the correct response to that arithmetic is exactly what we’re doing: you go forward, we go sideways, and the distance between us becomes the thing that keeps us alive.”

Her voice didn’t waver. Ren had seen his mother cry exactly once — the morning after the Jupiter comm, when she’d thought the screen was off. This wasn’t that. This was Elena at her most certain, saying the thing she’d been preparing to say since the liaison had knocked on their door.

”I know,” Ren said.

”I’m not finished.” Elena leaned closer to the screen. ”You are going to spend the next eighteen months in a place where the only thing standing between you and the people who want what’s in your blood is your own strength. That is not a burden I put on you. That is the road you chose when you decided to stop hiding, and I am proud of you for choosing it, and I am terrified of it, and both of those things are going to be true for as long as you are my son.”

Adrian put his hand on Elena’s shoulder. She didn’t lean into it, but she didn’t move away from it either. The two of them sat together on the screen the way they’d always sat together — a unit, steady, the parents who had loved him before he was extraordinary and would love him after the extraordinary part was done costing them things.

”Get stronger,” Elena said. ”Learn everything they can teach you. And come home to us when it’s time.”

The same words she’d said from the classified facility after the Jupiter breach. The same words, carrying more weight now, because this time the distance would be measured in galaxies and the silence might last months.

”I will,” Ren said.

Adrian took the comm when Elena stepped away to finish packing. His voice was lower, quieter — the private register he used when he had something to say that wasn’t for an audience, even an audience of one.

”Your mother is going to be fine,” he said. ”She handles fear by being useful, and wherever they put us, she’ll find a way to be useful within forty-eight hours. Probably reorganize the facility’s storage system. Maybe improve their botanical samples if they have a garden.”

Ren almost smiled. Almost.

”The thing I need to say to you is simpler,” Adrian continued. ”When I was your age, I thought strength meant doing everything yourself. Carrying every weight, managing every problem, keeping everyone safe through sheer willpower. It took me twenty years and your mother to learn that strength is knowing which weights are yours and which ones belong to the people standing next to you.”

He looked at his son through the screen. The steady eyes, the Explorer Guild veteran’s calm, the father who had walked into unstable realms and come back every time — not because he was the strongest person in the room, but because he’d learned which dangers to face and which ones to let the people beside him handle.

”Let your team carry what’s theirs,” Adrian said. ”And let us carry what’s ours. Your mother and I chose this. We’re not victims. We’re parents. There’s a difference.”

”I know, Dad.”

”I know you know. I’m saying it anyway, because I won’t be able to say it again for a while, and some things need to be said out loud before the line goes quiet.”

The comm showed 2147. Thirteen minutes.

They used them. Not on strategy, not on threat assessments, not on the things that could wait for encrypted reports and six-hour relay delays. Adrian told him the facility had decent food — not as good as Elena’s cooking, but decent. Elena came back and asked if Ren had been eating properly, and he said yes, and she said she didn’t believe him, and for thirty seconds the conversation sounded exactly like every family dinner he’d had in this life.

Normal. Warm. The kind of thing you didn’t know you were memorizing until you realized you might need the memory.

At 2158, Elena put her hand on the screen. Adrian’s hand settled beside hers.

”Two minutes,” Elena said.

”I know.”

”Go be what you’re becoming, Ren. And when it’s done — when you’re strong enough that safe stops being a question — come find us.”

The channel closed at 2200 on the mark. The Alliance relay officer didn’t give them an extra second. The screen went dark, and the room went quiet, and Ren sat on the edge of his bed holding a comm that no longer connected to anything.

He sat there for a while.

Not processing. Not planning. Just sitting with the weight of it — the silence where his parents’ voices had been, the knowledge that somewhere on this planet two people who loved him were climbing into an Alliance transport and disappearing into a classification level he couldn’t reach. They would be safe. He believed that the way he believed in gravity: not because someone had explained it, but because the alternative didn’t work.

Down the hall, he could hear the cohort. Yuelan’s voice, too loud for the hour, arguing with Cassian about packing order. Vesper’s door opening and closing. Iris’s footsteps — precise, measured, recognizable even through walls. The sounds of people preparing to leave the place that had made them.

Kaia pulsed. Warm, steady, present. The particular warmth she sent when the people Ren loved were hurting, and he was hurting because they were hurting, and the only thing she could offer was the certainty that he wasn’t carrying it alone.

’Tomorrow night. The gate. Then Sovereign Dawn, and the road, and whatever’s waiting at the end of it.’

He set the comm on the nightstand, face down the way Caelan kept his photograph. Then he stood up and opened the door.

Yuelan was in the corridor with an armful of practice slabs she was definitely not supposed to be packing. Cassian stood behind her with a manifest and an expression that said he’d already lost this argument twice.

”Ren!” Yuelan said. ”Tell Cassian that six practice slabs is a reasonable personal item allocation.”

”It is not,” Cassian said.

Ren looked at them. His team. The people who would be on the other side of the gate with him, walking onto a planet none of them had seen, into a world that was bigger and harder and more dangerous than anything Rose Country had prepared them for.

”Pack eight,” Ren said. ”You’ll break the first two in a week.”

Yuelan pointed at Cassian with the air of someone who had just won a Supreme Court ruling. Cassian closed his eyes. Somewhere behind them, Iris made a sound that was either a cough or a laugh she refused to let anyone identify.

The corridor was full of people preparing for tomorrow. Ren stepped into it and let the noise close around him — familiar, warm, alive. His parents were gone. His home was being packed into boxes. The enemy had a timeline and a plan, and the line had gone dark, and nothing about the next eighteen months was going to be safe.

But he wasn’t alone. And the people standing next to him had already proven that mattered more than anything the distance could take.

Tomorrow night, the gate.
