Medical Sage

Human experimentation is undoubtedly the most detestable and vile of acts, an utterly inhumane practice despised by all.

Therefore, following the end of the great war last century, every nation on Earth united to sign a treaty absolutely prohibiting all forms of human experimentation. Any violators would face sanctions from the United Nations, with severe consequences.

Yet now, they had witnessed such an incident with their own eyes. This enraged both Dr. Xu and Elder Du, causing the muscles in their faces to twitch uncontrollably.

”This is outrageous! Absolutely outrageous! I must report this immediately! I will urge them to find the culprit and bring him to justice! He must receive the punishment he deserves!” Elder Du exclaimed angrily.

”Doctor Chen, do you really have a way to save him? You know that once the human genome is altered, it’s almost impossible to revert it,” Dr. Xu said solemnly to Chen Fei.

Although he was a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, he had adopted many Western medical concepts over the years. He understood that the human genome was one of the body’s most complex components, second only to the brain. Now, tests had found genes from some kind of snake in Kou Ling’s father’s blood.

In such a seemingly impossible situation, could the man really be saved? Not only did Xu Zhenxing doubt it, but even Elder Du seemed skeptical.

”I only said I could save his life. As for what’s inside his body, that’s up to fate...”

But before Chen Fei could finish, a muffled PFFT echoed. His eyes immediately caught a silver streak of light that pierced through the wall. It shot toward him at a breakneck speed, tearing through the air.

Startled, he instantly dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding the silver streak. Even so, his arm was grazed, leaving behind a bloody trail.

The entire sequence happened in the blink of an eye. Other than Chen Fei, no one else had time to react.

Fortunately, the silver streak seemed to be aimed only at him. Had it targeted anyone else present, they would already be dead.

It actually penetrated my Spiritual Energy shield. Chen Fei thought, his expression blank as he looked at the silver object embedded in the ground. It was a nondescript, double-edged throwing knife, but its presence sent ripples of shock through him.

Blood flowed from the wound on his arm, staining his left sleeve red.

Ever since his cultivation level had reached the Qi Refining Third Layer, he had been able to conjure a Spiritual Energy shield instantly. This meant that the gray-silver knife on the ground had forcefully broken through that shield to wound him.

If I hadn’t reacted in time, or if the knife had struck a vital point, the consequences would have been unimaginable!

”Doctor Chen, we... this...”

Elder Du and the others were soaked in a cold sweat, their faces fraught with tension as they looked at Chen Fei.

Elder Du, in particular, had seen with his own eyes how Chen Fei had dodged bullets at close range, yet now he had been wounded by that silver knife. The mere thought sent a chill down his spine.

”B-Brother Chen!?” Little Kou Ling was terrified by the scene, his face pale and his lips quivering. He was, after all, only twelve or thirteen years old.

However, Chen Fei didn’t answer them this time. Instead, he casually staunched the bleeding on his arm before walking out of the bungalow, his expression unreadable. His gaze swept the area before locking onto the rooftop of a distant, three-story old building. There, he met a pair of cold, unmoving eyes, and it felt as though lightning arced between them in the void.

How did he find me?

Atop the old three-story building stood a disheveled, white-haired old man. One of his eyes was blind, making him difficult to look at. His messy white hair obscured his face. One hand was clasped behind his back, while the other held several silver throwing knives. He looked down on Chen Fei, his gaze exceptionally cold.

His position was, at a minimum, several dozen to nearly a hundred meters away from Chen Fei’s.

Yet Chen Fei had just stepped outside, glanced around, and immediately pinpointed his location. How could this not be shocking?

The old man, however, seemed to have little capacity for emotion. A mere flicker of surprise crossed his turbid old eyes before he shook his head in Chen Fei’s direction and turned to leave. As for why he shook his head, it was likely a threat. After all, isn’t it normal to issue a threat when someone learns something they shouldn’t have? That knife, for instance.

Chen Fei watched the mysterious old man leave so casually, but after a long moment of hesitation, he remained rooted to the spot. The reason was simple. From such a great distance, his opponent had thrown a knife by hand that had still managed to pierce his Spiritual Energy shield and injure him.

What terrifying level of strength would that require? A Half-Step Innate? Or a true Innate Expert?!

”Damn it... when did experts of this caliber become a dime a dozen, popping up out of nowhere?” Chen Fei cursed under his breath, his lips feeling dry.

He wasn’t an ordinary person. As a true disciple of an Innate Level Ancient Martial Artist, he knew perfectly well that Innate Experts weren’t a dime a dozen. There were probably only a handful of such astonishing, titan-like figures in the entire country, and they served as the pillars for various powerful factions.

As for a Half-Step Innate, while significantly weaker than the Innate Level, they were still like an insurmountable mountain to anyone below that level—utterly terrifying.

”Doctor Chen, are you alright?”

Just then, Elder Du and Dr. Xu seemed to finally regain their composure. They rushed out of the bungalow, asking anxiously.

”I’m fine. But first, call for assistance. I suggest we transfer the patient to the hospital immediately. As for this matter, I’ll report it to Deputy Mayor Huang. A special department should handle it from there. We can discuss it then,” Chen Fei said, managing a faint smile.

”Oh, right, right... let’s get the patient to the hospital first,” Dr. Xu said, nodding immediately.

In fact, Kou Ling’s father had been transferred out of the hospital because they couldn’t afford the fees. But now, the nature of the situation had completely changed. It involved human experimentation, a practice prohibited worldwide. Under such circumstances, money was a secondary concern, and a specialized department would surely step in to resolve it.

”Chen... Brother Chen.” At that moment, Kou Ling also walked out of the bungalow.

”Don’t worry, your dad will be fine,” Chen Fei said with a smile, gently patting the boy’s head.

”Hello, Qin Yuan? It’s me. Send an ambulance to XXX right now. And remember to call the police; have them come with you!” Lord Du said, making a call on the side. The Qin Yuan he spoke of was the current dean of the Traditional Medicine Affiliated Hospital of Northern Mountain City and one of his more outstanding disciples.

「…」

The disheveled old man blended into the crowd, moving like any other pedestrian. Walking with a blank expression, he dialed a number. ”Sir, it’s me. The mission has failed.”

”Oh? The mission failed?” A surprised voice came from the other end of the line. It sounded young but was inexplicably eerie, like a ghost whispering in one’s ear at night—chilling to the bone.

”Yes. He dodged my knife,” the disheveled old man replied, his tone flat and his expression still blank.

”What? You said he dodged your knife? Who was it? One of those old-timers from the military, or someone from that department?” The young voice was finally affected, his tone becoming cold and urgent.

Clearly, the person on the phone knew just how terrifying the disheveled old man’s throwing knife was. Even within their organization, only a handful of people could dodge it. Each of them was his equal in status and power, and some were even his superiors. It was no wonder the man was so shocked to hear those words.

”Not someone from the military. Nor from Flying Leopard. It was a young man...” the disheveled old man replied calmly, only to be interrupted again.

”What did you say? A! Young! Man?!” the eerie voice enunciated each word, his shock palpable.

”Yes, a young man. Probably about your age, Sir,” the disheveled old man said flatly, nodding.

The other end of the line went silent.

After a long while, the sinister voice returned, now slightly hoarse. ”I... see. Continue.” The change in tone suggested the person was deeply shaken.

What? The one who could stop the knife of my most powerful subordinate... was a young man?!

”I found the escapee and was about to deal with him handily, but because of that young man... I failed. Moreover, there were nearly a hundred meters between us, but it only took him a few seconds to detect my presence. He even seemed to see me clearly,” the disheveled old man said slowly, as if unaccustomed to speaking so much.

But the slower he spoke, the more shocked the listener on the other end became.

From nearly a hundred meters away, and through various obstructions, he pinpointed the enemy’s location in just seconds.

”Could it be that he, like Uncle Eagle, has had eagle genes implanted in him?” the voice on the phone murmured.

”I... I don’t know.”
