”Damn, a bunch of country bumpkins causing so much trouble.”

Although Zhang Quan was arrogant, he knew that provoking the director of the Xicheng District Public Security Bureau was not a good idea. He immediately said with a gloomy face, ”Fine, fine, I get it. Since Director Bi has spoken, just have them apologize to me.”

Seeing this, Captain Luo of the traffic police finally heaved a sigh of relief, as if a heavy stone had been lifted from his heart. He walked back to Murong Shan and Little Fatty with an embarrassed look and whispered, ”Just put on an act and apologize. After all, his father is the Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission of Tongzhou City. That official title is quite intimidating, so... you see...”

From his perspective as a district-level traffic police captain, being able to afford a Maserati and having the director of the district Public Security Bureau personally call to mediate already carried a lot of weight.

Unfortunately, their luck ran out, and they encountered someone even more intimidating.

”I...” Murong Shan bit her lip firmly, clutching the still-swollen, five-fingered handprint on her cheek as an indescribable sense of injustice welled up inside her. She wasn’t some naive, innocent princess living in an ivory tower. Having started her own business years ago, she had experienced plenty of hardship and seen the ways of the world.

But injustice was injustice, and she simply couldn’t accept it.

Seeing this, Captain Luo felt a complicated emotion stir in his heart. He wanted to try persuading them again but found himself at a loss for words.

”Captain, Director Bi has arrived,” an officer announced just as Director Bi Zhengwei of the Xicheng District Public Security Bureau hurried in.

Seeing this, Captain Luo was both surprised and immensely relieved. With Director Bi Zhengwei himself here, this troublesome matter should be out of my hands now, right? When immortals fight, a mortal like me should just watch the show.

Is that really him, Director Bi? A hint of surprise flashed through Zhang Quan’s eyes.

He knew for a fact that he hadn’t called the director. For him to show up so coincidentally at this very moment... it was undoubtedly for that man and woman.

Do they really have some powerful backer? Powerful enough to make the director of the Public Security Bureau rush over personally during work hours?

Even with his father, the Secretary of the Municipal Political and Legal Affairs Commission, as his backer, he still had to show some respect when someone of this stature made a special trip.

After all, strictly speaking, Zhang Quan was just a young master with no official position. Although his father was powerful, that personal influence couldn’t compare to the actual authority that came with the director’s official post.

Thinking of this, he began to feel a slight sense of foreboding, but it quickly dissipated.

Who was he kidding? He was Zhang Quan! Within the circles of princelings in not just Tongzhou City but the entire Jiangnan Province, he was an influential figure.

But now, he had personally stepped in and still couldn’t even handle a minor traffic accident. It made him feel belittled and disrespected. He seethed with indignation.

At that thought, a glint of coldness flashed through his narrow eyes, which already made his face look discordant. He grew even more annoyed.

”Excuse me, are you Miss Murong Shan and Mr. Little Fatty?” Director Bi had arrived in such a hurry that he didn’t even have time to greet Captain Luo. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and asked anxiously.

This was no joke! The VIP, Mr. Chen, a man whom even Secretary Dong held in high regard, was about to arrive, and he still hadn’t handled this situation cleanly. How could he not be anxious?

”I am, I am, I’m Little Fatty, and this is Murong Shan. But how do you know our names? And you’re the director?” Before Murong Shan could speak, Little Fatty couldn’t restrain his curiosity and blurted out the questions, looking puzzled.

”Ah, so you are Miss Murong Shan and Mr. Little Fatty! My apologies, my apologies. Something came up at the bureau, so I couldn’t get here sooner. I heard you were in a traffic accident? Are you alright? Don’t worry. I know this isn’t your fault. Our public security bureau will certainly ensure justice is served for you!” Upon finally finding them, Director Bi Zhengwei spoke with such warmth and enthusiasm that everyone present was taken aback.

What in the world is happening? Has Director Bi lost his mind?

According to the usual script, even though Bi Zhengwei was the Director of the Xicheng District Public Security Bureau, shouldn’t he at least pretend to greet the local bigwig, Captain Luo? Not to mention, the son of the powerful Secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission, Zhang Quanchuan—Young Master Zhang Quan himself—was standing right there with a sullen face, and the director acted as if he didn’t even see him.

No, looking at him, it seemed he genuinely didn’t have time to notice.

”Director Bi, what do you mean by that?” Zhang Quan couldn’t help but ask, his expression dark.

”Who is—” Bi Zhengwei started to say, turning around. He then saw Zhang Quan’s all-too-familiar face and froze. ”Huh? Isn’t this Zhang Quan? What are you doing here too?”

As the son of his direct superior, Bi Zhengwei was of course familiar with Zhang Quan. But still...

”Hello, Director Bi. It’s an honor that you still remember me. For a moment there, I thought you’d forgotten who I was,” Zhang Quan said. The anger inside him subsided a little now that the director had finally acknowledged him, but his tone was still clearly unpleasant.

”Hehe, Young Master Zhang, you’re misunderstanding me,” Bi Zhengwei chuckled. He then leaned closer to Zhang Quan’s ear and whispered seriously, ”However, you’ve caused quite a mess today. If you take my advice, apologize to them. For your father’s sake, they probably won’t pursue the matter. Otherwise, I’m afraid things will get very troublesome!”

What? What the hell? He wants me, Zhang Quan, to apologize to that bitch!?

”Director Bi, are you kidding me? They’re just a few country bumpkins! On what grounds do they deserve an apology from me, Zhang Quan!?” he snapped, his face contorted with anger. He felt deeply humiliated.

”Sigh, Little Quan, if that’s how you want to think about it, then I, your Uncle Bi, have nothing more to say,” Director Bi sighed. ”However, I will personally handle this traffic accident from now on. Whoever is at fault will not get away with it.” He couldn’t be bothered to say more. With that, he turned and walked away.

”Director Bi, you...” However, seeing Director Bi’s blatant attitude, Zhang Quan finally realized something was wrong, and his expression shifted.

Sure, a mere district police director is just a department-level cadre at the end of the day. With his father’s backing, he had no reason to be afraid. But Director Bi’s attitude didn’t seem to be his alone! He knew exactly who he was, yet he still insisted on handling the matter ’impartially’... Does that mean he’s planning to go after me?

Just then, another traffic officer led two men inside. One was in his late thirties or early forties, slightly overweight but with a scholarly and gentle demeanor.

The other was a young man in his twenties dressed in cheap, market-stall clothes. Yet he walked in front, his face expressionless but his eyes sharp, and he carried himself with an indescribable aura that seemed to exert immense pressure.

The two who had just arrived were, of course, Dong Wencheng’s personal secretary, Shen Kai, and the expressionless Chen Fei.

”Captain Luo, Director Bi, Secretary Shen has arrived.” The next moment, the traffic officer leading the two men spoke with a trembling voice. Everyone present turned their heads, and every heart in the room skipped a beat.

As Secretary Dong Wencheng’s de facto representative at the grassroots level and the undisputed ’number two’ in the officialdom of Tongzhou City, Shen Kai’s face was naturally well-known to many subordinates.

But why would Secretary Dong’s personal secretary be here!? Could it be...

”Secretary Shen, hello. I presume this is Mr. Chen? A pleasure to meet you. I am Bi Zhengwei, Director of the Xicheng District Public Security Bureau.” Bi Zhengwei, who had already been informed of their arrival, was the first to react, rushing up to greet them.

What shocked everyone even more was that even though Secretary Dong’s personal secretary, Shen Kai, was standing right there, Director Bi seemed far more enthusiastic and respectful toward the other young man. The sight stunned everyone, especially Murong Shan and Little Fatty, who now had their hands clapped over their mouths in astonishment.

Oh my god, isn’t... isn’t that Chen Fei? How... how is he so incredible!?

”Hello, Director Bi. I’m here about my friends. How is the situation being handled? Has responsibility been determined?” Chen Fei asked calmly, all while smiling and winking at Murong Shan and Little Fatty, who were standing nearby.

”Uh, this… Captain Luo, weren’t you just handling this? Come over here and explain the situation to Mr. Chen,” Director Bi said with an awkward laugh. He pushed Captain Luo, who had been trying to hide in the corner, forward. As he did, he shot the captain a look, signaling that he had better explain things ’properly’—meaning, assign blame where blame was due.

Captain Luo, having been suddenly pushed forward, was flustered. He stammered, blurting out the truth. ”Th-that is… we had almost sorted it out. Miss Murong was willing to accept full responsibility, but… but Young Master Zhang wasn’t satisfied. He was hoping Miss Murong would apologize.”

At these words, Bi Zhengwei felt his heart sink. His mood instantly soured, and he looked as though he had just swallowed a fly.

Damn it! I told you to come out and smooth things over, not to make things worse, you idiot! By saying that, aren’t you just telling everyone that I, Bi Zhengwei, am incompetent? That I couldn’t even handle something I’d personally guaranteed?
