High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2191: Chapter 412: Darkness Is Justice

Gan Ning tilted his head and adjusted the mask on his face.

From deep within the howling wind and snow came some suspicious sounds, making him somewhat alert.

Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!

One shadow after another passed through the wind and snow, quietly landing in front of the warlock. There weren’t many people, probably less than ten. They were all draped in black cloaks, wearing raven masks, with tiny golden numbers on one side of the mask. The numbers varied in size, the smallest being Gan Ning’s No. 3 mask, and the largest belonging to a tall wizard with the number twenty-one.

Just like many card games’ rules, in this organization, the smaller the number, the higher the status. Therefore, at this moment, the third raven remained silent, and all others sensibly kept quiet.

The wind and snow were fierce.

In just a moment, these ravens were covered in snow, and their black cloaks turned white. From afar, it was almost impossible to differentiate them from the surrounding trees.

Gan Ning still tilted his ear, carefully distinguishing the subtle differences in the sound of the wind.

Finally, the warlock numbered 07 could not hold back and looked up at the sky: ”Is there anything unusual? I remember the ’eyes’ of the observation room have been blocked... The school guardian array also can’t monitor this area, right.”

”It’s ’deception,’ not ’blocking.’” Number three raven corrected his companion’s wording: ”The observation room can still see the hunting area of the Fringe Hunting Team, but the images are delayed and tampered with... What I’m more concerned about is if anyone heard any strange sounds?”

”Strange sounds?” Number seven raven was immediately intrigued and, like number three raven, tilted his head to carefully listen to the sounds deep within the wind and snow.

The other ravens followed suit, tilting their heads.

After a while, it was number seven raven who shook his head first: ”I can’t tell, besides the sound of the wind, there’s also the faint sound of trees falling... It’s nothing unusual. What did you hear?”

Number three raven uncertainly touched his long bird beak: ”I feel like it sounds like the sounds of giants fighting.”

”Giants? Impossible!”

Another raven with the number eleven finally spoke bravely: ”Before the Winter Hunting, the school carefully cleaned up the hunting grounds within the range; except for a few wandering ogres, the largest creature was an elderly man bear... Even the giant monsters napping in tree holes were driven deeper into the forest. There’s no way there could be giants!”

”It’s better not to be so absolute about anything.”

Another raven immediately sneered: ”Last year at the school hunting party’s new students’ competition, a sleeping black dragon suddenly appeared in the repeatedly cleared hunting grounds, frightening quite a few teachers nearly to the point of a heart attack... The previous Lei Zhe and Augustus both also swore before the competition that it was ’absolutely safe.’

”If it weren’t for that incident, Sepulano couldn’t have risen so quickly, right.” Another raven spoke with a sense of grudge, realizing he misspoke, quickly pulling the topic back to the beginning: ”...Maybe it’s not the sounds of giants fighting, but the roar of the wind and snow. With the snowstorm so big today, it’s not at all surprising that it makes similar noises.”

The other ravens nodded in agreement.

Gan Ning lowered his head, expressing no opinion.

As a Magical Biology Teacher, he was much more familiar with the creatures in the Silent Forest than anyone else. For this reason, he was very sure that the suspicious roar was not the wind but more like a giant.

The reason for using ’like’ is because he felt he had never heard a similar sound before. Among all the similar options listed in his mind, only the roar of giants fighting was the most similar.

”Perhaps.”

Number three raven finally shook his head, looking around: ”I’m just worried if that were a giant, would it interfere with our plan... The professor is very focused on this task, and the mission objectives are very clear. If there are any objections to the plan or arrangement, speak now, there’s one last chance to opt out.”

No one would act foolishly at such a critical juncture.

”Very well.”

Number seven raven cleared his throat and added: ”Everyone should know by now, this mission’s objectives are similar to the last one. We’re still to extract blood from some young wizards, but replacing the other hunting team, the relevant plans are essentially the same as the last time...”

The truth was not so.

Gan Ning lowered his eyelids and silently apologized in his heart.

This time, the apparent target was the young wizards of the Fringe Hunting Team, whereas the actual target was their advisor, Zhu Si. Although the last attack on the Atonement Hunting Team did not cause serious consequences, that doesn’t mean the school hasn’t noticed the abnormalities behind the slumber, so this Winter Hunting, the school specially reinforced the hunting team’s protection measures, with the first line of defense being each team’s advisor.

The professor’s plan was simple, to push the boat along the current and reveal the snake in the grass—in short, to send some ravens to repeat the previous tactics to lure the Fringe Hunting Team’s advisor out to help, then ’surround and capture,’ taking a portion of Zhu Si’s blood.

This also means that these companions in front and including himself need to play the part of suitable ’bait.’ To interfere with the school’s diviners as much as possible, each person could only know a small part of the entire plan, and even Gan Ning himself did not dare claim to know all of the professor’s arrangements.

And the most important part of this plan was not the two steps at hand.

Whether it was attacking the Fringe Hunting Team or ambushing Zhu Si, neither posed much difficulty for the ravens. The entire scheme’s greatest challenge was how to execute this plan right under the school’s nose – including finding ways to mobilize the Assistant Team, keeping them away from the Fringe Hunting Team’s hunting grounds; discreetly interfering with the school’s monitoring equipment; and considering the Atonement Hunting Team neighboring the Fringe’s hunting grounds, whose advisory teacher is a Big Wizard, necessitating a distraction when the plan commences, and so on.

”Darkness is justice.” He couldn’t help but murmur softly.

”What?”

Number seven raven didn’t know if he didn’t hear clearly or didn’t understand. He had just finished repeating the operation plan to the other ravens, pondering the plan’s flaws.

Gan Ning raised his head, looking around, his voice was soft yet resonated clearly in every raven’s ears: ”Darkness can be just. But this doesn’t mean we have to succumb to darkness. As a Big Wizard once said – meanness and grandeur, malice and kindness, darkness and justice can co-exist without contradiction within the same heart.”

Number seven raven waved his hand as if to shoo away a mosquito.

”Artistic temperament’s rotten habit.”

He grumbled, turning to look at the other ravens, slightly energizing: ”...Does anyone have anything to add about just proposed strategy? If not, we’ll proceed with this plan over the next two days as scheduled!”
